HILLEBERG SOULO - Review - A detailed look and review of the HILLEBERG SOULO TENT. This review was actually done when out on an overnights wild camp in The Mourne Mountains Northern Ireland. A stunning location so look out for great shots of the tent and a few pictures at the end. I discuss PITCHING, EASE OF USE, STRENGTH, COMFORT, FABRICS, DESIGN and much more. I also give my thoughts and compare the Hilleberg Soulo to the Terra Nova Southern Cross 1 and the MSR Access 1.

Tom, this is by far the best and most detailed review of a Soulo on KZfaq, well done. Regarding the fabrics, you certainly know your stats, very very interesting and I learnt a lot from this. The extra guy line tips were also fantastic ideas 💡 👌 Thanks for the shout out as well Tom, really appreciate it. Best of luck to everyone who enters your giveaway, 28 hours at maximum sounds great. Hi Joe, thank you... well now you know! The materials used are no doubt the best but also the most expensive - but that's how it goes. So much thought has also gone into the design and construction and this makes a big difference. Super heavy reinforcement of areas subject to extra stress or if protection is needed for the zippers etc. Doing a review is a bit like doing an interview.... there are always things that you miss and when you do it in the mountains there are only so many "takes" that you can do!! Hope you get out soon.. Tom

Why am I watching a video on a red Hilleberg Soulo when I already own one? Well, I don’t know why, but I am glad I did. Your video gave me lots onf technical information I was unaware of. I just knew mine stands up to anything the Scottish weather has thrown at it, whether summit camping or low level. I have used mine as much as possible, as soon as I get back from one camp I am planning the next. It’s a lifestyle you are buying, not a tent. They are worth every penny, after a couple of camps you will sleep soundly through anything the weather can throw at you as you know you are fine inside the tent. I do agree the inner tends to flap around a bit but it adds to the drama of wild camping😁.

Some seriously great comments here Vambo, the fact that you have a RED Soulo ok I will mention it again RED!! is a good start. You will never lose interest in one of these tents once you get the bug.. Like you as soon I have finished a camp I am thinking about when I am getting out again. It really is just so addictive.. Great comments about getting used to the flapping inner and building up confidence that the tent is sound in ridiculous conditions..

Hi Jon, thank you for your very kind words.. Just back this morning from another trip which I might get edited before Christmas!! Even if you don't venture out in the worst of conditions a tent like this may encourage you to do so. If you buy one and don't use it they go for serious money second hand on eBay so a good investment. I resisted it for years but glad I eventually took the plunge and bought one. ATB Tom

A beautiful tent, very comprehensively reviewed thank you. 99% of the time this would be complete overkill for my camping needs, so I carry lighter options, but it's great to learn about the gold standard. I've a soft spot for the Mournes - five years back I fled a particularly relentless midge onslaught in Scotland by boarding a ferry to Antrim, and what a pleasant discovery lay ahead! My first time in the region, and won't be my last. Also learned the hard way about the stupidity of setting up a new shelter (Hexpeak V4A) for the first time on a windy wet mountainside without previous practice - all came right in the end, but lesson learned.

Hi David, I have just replaced the Black Label version of this tent with a Hilleberg Nammatj 2. I was able to save 1600g by changing my pack so added back a little weight for more space and comfort. Hey Tom, I'll echo many of the comments here and say that this is the most detailed and thorough review of the Soulo on KZfaq, bar none! When I was trying to decide between the Akto and the Soulo, your video really did help me decide on the Soulo. Here in Ontario I pitch a tent on rock 90% of the time so free standing was the clear choice. I haven't taken my Soulo out yet but I have a 3 day winter camping adventure coming in early January, I can't wait! May I ask what wireless mic you are using? Your voice comes through so clearly, and I'm looking for a wireless mic for some upcoming videos. Cheers Tom, well done!

Hi Pete, thank you for your comments which are almost as detailed as my review!! I use a SonyTX650 (YOU KNOW I like SONY!!). Its doesn't have a wireless connection so I have to sync the audio in post using FCPX. Usually the software does it but you still have to find the appropriate audio track to match the video and the video clip needs some voice audio to be able to match the external mic!! If the video camera voice audio is killed by the wind they you have to sync the audio manually. There can also be occasions where you are talking away and realise that you have forgot to activate the external mic too!! I am looking at purchasing a RHODE Wireless Go such as used by this guys channel kzfaq.info/love/Vu0oJz1HB8iOPORhnxNtGQ Outdoors Inspiration. In some of his work I thought the voice was slightly out of sync but for KZfaq that may not really matter.. Hope this makes sense Tom

I love my Soulo, but if they make a V2 I would request: - drop the height a little to give it a slightly lower profile. I'm short though! - Use less fabric for the inner to make it tighter. - Add mid panel guys to tighten up the outer even more (If Hilleberg can do this and keep it strong) Cons of my suggestions: - won't shed snow as well - less headroom for those who aren't tiny like me - a tighter inner would be less forgiving and more prone to overstressing the attachment points. - mid panel guys would be a weak point. So... While I would tweak it, I truly believe Hilleberg know exactly what they are doing.

Hi Jen. Its great to think of ways to make a tent better or modify in some way. You have raised some great points but also understand the compromises... I think that they could adjust the pole geometry slightly to take away some strength in the roof and add it to the side. The pole crossing points are all very close together. But as you said I also feel that Hilleberg know exactly what they are doing. Thank you very much for your comments. Tom

@@TOMHEANEY100 I think if they increased the 'triangle' size at the top it would be prone to puddle forming in prolonged periods of rain and little wind. I've seen some cheap(ish) Vango tents puddle like this in the spring and totally flood the kids inside. The fabric wets out, it stretches and a puddle forms and eventually leaks. On the Soulo I think it could be a snow catch point.

Hi Chris, thank you for your comments. I am sure that you have looked at my video comparing the two and I also have a wind test video of both in action...Its always a hard decision. I sold my Red label yesterday to keep the Black label just mainly for the durability, 10mm poles and piece of mind that I have the strongest when the conditions really get nasty... The RL however can take a battering but if that's the type of camping you do on a regular basis then the BL will last longer... The best of luck with deciding and both are great. ATB Tom

Agree with what AMC outdoors said. Really good review. I'm torn between this and Unna. Not so much bothered about the vestibule space but concerned about condensation and weight. Any tips?
@TOMHEANEY100
@TOMHEANEY100 2 жыл бұрын
Hello good to hear from you regarding selection of a tent... Of you don't expect conditions to be too serious then the Unna offers more space at the same weight. Condensation theoretically will be less due to more tent volume..I borrowed an Unna to review but not had the opportunity to use it extensively. Regarding Condensation Hilleberg believe in 4 season tents priority is to seal out weather but this seals in moisture as a draw back. So you accept and manage this as a pro and con.. Prevention is better than cure so minimise moisture accumulation and maximise ventilation the moment you pitch your tent. I carry a lightweight trekking towel and wipe it off if necessary.. There is no magic answer here just practical advice which I hope helps.. ATVB Tom

Hi Tom. I have copied and pasted a comment from another Soulo video. Just wondered your opinion as it takes an opposite view to yours refarding order of pole insertion. Smileytall 5 years ago (edited) With the short pole pitched first, you have three points of load bearing contact as they each cross - with the short pole over, you only have one (at the rear) so the other two long poles will be much more likely to flex under load, such as snow or high winds - and could either fail, rip out clips, or do both at the same time. Put the smaller pole over and press gently downwards on the lower two and you will see what I mean, there will be nothing to stop them collapsing other than stitching - compared to fitting the shorter pole under and supporting the whole apex, making the whole structure stronger. I'm also sure you aware, but just for other viewers, it's worth clipping each bag (tent, poles, pegs) to the carabiner as you empty them as good practice, or it wont just be your tent going walkies, even with a slight breeze! Great video, thanks for your time to share it with us.

Hi Madcat, thank you for this.. I understand what he is saying BUT Hilleberg recommend short pole over the top and that's more than good enough for me.. I found an unwelcome amount of tension the other way... How would you feel if you had a fabric tear and you knew you had gone against the manufacturer guidelines?? Hilleberg have a pitching instruction video which clearly states over the top... Good topic for discussion though so appreciate you sharing... ATB Tom

Hey Tom, discovered your channel recently and really enjoy the content. Can you give me a hint how tall you are and how much head-/ and or footspace you have in the Soulo? Because what i really dislike about any tent is when I touch the ends with my feet or my head. Kind regards from Germany :)

Hi Karl-Heinz, thank you for your comments. I am 6.1 or 186cm and have lots of room in the Soulo. I do sleep on my side though which helps. The Soulo is a dome tent but the ends don't slope in too quickly which is good. Some of the other Hilleberg's are longer but the ends slope in very quickly which limits floor space at sleeping mat height. I also come from using two person tents so I have been used to lots of space. There is always sacrifices to be made in some areas for gains in others. 6.3 in my opinion would be about the limit... Great review! I got a question for you. As a long guy, 190cm I've always wondered about the space in the Soulo. You seem quite long yourself, how long are you? and do you touch the inner tent in a sleeping bag, I mean at the head or feet section? . Also just a note, I think one of the things that make the Hilleberg fabric so durable is that they actually add 3 layers of silicone on each side of the fabric which I think is quite unique among tent makers. Anyway, great review.

Hi Karl-Johan, Thank you for your comments. I am 186cm and the Soulo is perfect with a little bit of room to spare. Don't really touch the inner or have fabric too close to my head. Hilleberg just don't cut any corners in construction and materials and it shows through and through

Hi. I'm 191cm and use a Soulo. It's just long enough...in any case, though, very few one man tents are longer inside and many are shorter - some by 20cm.

Hi Tom. I really enjoy your videos. I'm a novice camper but want to explore further and I'm thinking of buying a Hilleberg. Trivial problem, I know, but I'm unsure what colour to go for. I've noticed that you seem to be an advocate of red tents, can I ask if there's any particular reason for this, other than personal preference?
@TOMHEANEY100
@TOMHEANEY100 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Eddy, you haven't seen my RED Akto yet! Mostly personal preference to be honest. RED stands out against the terrain and some people like this or others prefer a more stealthy look to blend in better with the environment. The sand colour is a good compromise. I do honestly love my Hilleberg tents having used many tents from other premium brands. ATB and is there a particular model that you are thinking of? ATB Tom

@@TOMHEANEY100 Thanks Tom. Yes, I love the look of the RED! But I also don't really want to draw too much attention to myself, especially with being quite inexperienced with it all. Thinking of getting the Soulo. I'd rather buy a really good tent and not need it, than buy a cheap tent and constantly worry it might fail me one night, when I really need it. Looking forward to your future videos. Cheers, Eddy 👍

Do Hilleberg have a recommended order for inserting the poles? In other words , do they say whether the transverse pole should be under or over the other two. I know you say over. Just wondered what the official guidance is. Great review by the way. Thanks (and subbed!!)

Hi A good friend of mine contacted Petra regarding this and apparently it can be either way. I found it a little easier to clip the poles with the transverse pole over the top. I have heard it mentioned for heavy snow load its better for it to be underneath as the two longitudinal poles are better supported.. Thank you for your comments and subscription. Tom

From what I remember, the manual says over the other two poles. That’s how I do it, and it works great.

Hi Max I would be in the same camp as yourself (ha ha) based on the experience I have had with other brands. Its not that they are bad but when it comes to reliability if there is any weakness at all anywhere in the tent high winds will find it... Tom

What tent would you say is the strongest? Trango 2, the NF Mountain 25, or the Soulo... I have the Mountain 25 but considering getting a Soulo or a Trango 2... Thanks
@TOMHEANEY100
@TOMHEANEY100 13 күн бұрын
If you have a Mountain 25 I definitely would not get a Trangos.. Trangos are much more bendy in high winds.. Soulo is really about the same strength wise as MTN 25 and you would probably need 70mph winds to see any difference.. A BL Soulo is probably the strongest option if that's your main consideration.. best wishes Tom

Got the Soulo BL rather than the RL as for 1lb extra weight you get 50% stronger fabric and 20% stronger poles for about the same price, giving not only extra strength but also longevity. 1lb extra weight is not noticable inside a pack which is going to weigh 20lbs+.
@TOMHEANEY100
@TOMHEANEY100 5 ай бұрын
Yes when you compare the BL Soulo against the RL Soulo you get a lot more strength and durability.. If you don't use a footprint on the BL you have nearly saved the weight difference.. But as you say a couple of hundred grammes is hardly noticeable.. I eventually struggled with mine because I started to compare it to a Nammatj... Once again you get a lot more tent for very little extra. Comfort and space matter more to me and I don't care about a tent being freestanding or pack size.. Maybe I just fancied a change as there is a lot of choice at that weight.. Great to hear from you and your thoughts 💬.. Best wishes Tom

I think the Nallo is easier and faster to pitch in high winds and rain. The Soulo has better space and is more “sexy.”

@@TOMHEANEY100 I beg your pardon. i didn’t mean “more space “ .. I meant to write “better shaped space!” Its hard to compare freestanding with “pegged in“ tents , when space is tight they are easier to pitch and move if your initial pitch is not optimal !
@maxflight777
@maxflight777 3 жыл бұрын
Pitching the Nallo in a strong wind, I found the Hoop, type, tent, better, because I was able to do all the setup, hoop inserts and one end, stake setting, Work, while the tent was flat on the ground, and then, setting the last stakes, Then crawl in right away. .. not have to cope with the rainfly and staking down, with the wind, wanting to blow it away from me while I'm working.. The down side of a freestanding tent is the time it takes to pitch.
