Udonis Haslem spoke about this recently when he said during team scrimmages they play something called the "Hunger Games"... its where they have team sceimmages during practice and to win they focus on getting stops rather than winning with points.. Miami Heat Culture is based on stellar Defense on a team effort.

Thanks for highlighting the Heat and Bam especially! As you stated multiple times, he's the engine behind their defense and the strategy is not necessarily stopping shots at the rim (they just don't have the size for that) but preventing them from even happening.

That defense is soo well coached. Spo really understands how to maximize his personnel’s strengths. He knows his guys will get beat off the dribble and aren’t prolific rim defenders, so he’s got them all bought in to forcing plays to the stripe and helping up to that level or funneling craftier playmakers to those runners and step backs just outside the painted area. Scary stuff to watch as a Celtics fan

Heat probably the most versatile and smart team defensively they mixed with zone switch and over help they are just on a level in terms of utilizing every possible strategy. That’s why they tend to " overachieve " in playoffs they just maximize their talent and know how to play basketball.

@@HoopVenue But it is. They have the 8th highest defensive rating for the season. It’s not like they just turned on a switch. They are the defending eastern conference champs. It’s not an achievement to just make it a good game against the 2nd youngest team in the league. And Bam was a -18 in the game against OKC. Not saying they’re a bad team but they’ve lost 2 in a row and just aren’t striking fear into anyone these days.

What are You even talking about? Most of the games they won were against bad teams like Wizards, Portland or Utah. They won with embiidless Sixers. Their best win in this stretch was against Bucks. Couple of wins against mediocore teams like Pelicans, Kings or Orlando. They lost against really good teams - Celtics, Nuggets, Clippers and Thunder. They just have a favorable schedule, that's all there is to it.

Magic and Kings are both 10 games above .500, the Pelicans have had the 4th best Net Rating in the NBA this season and are 3 games back from homecourt in the West; "mediocre" just isn't the word. As for the losses, they lost to the Celtics by 4, the Nuggets by 6 while holding them to just 103, the Clippers by 8 while also holding them to 103, and the Thunder by 7 while holding them to 107. All 4 of those games were great defensive performance that came down to the closing minutes, you will take those losses against contenders while beating other playoff teams.
