Fans of the horror genre are well-versed with the magical works of Clive Barker, and any of his stories would incur the interest of these fans. When The Midnight Meat Train was adapted into a movie, people were expecting something special, and they weren’t disappointed! The shocking narrative about a photographer and his obsession with a maniacal killer, coupled with the demented twist at the end, was a great recipe for success. The gore-hounds were pleased with the explicit violence, and the title of the movie has been certainly justified with some unthinkable gore. It is one of Barker’s most revered short stories about a supernatural serial killer, and director Ryuhei Kitamura did justice to the golden content. Bradley Cooper starred in this film before he became a Hollywood legend, and his power-packed performance alongside Vinnie Jones is not to be missed.
In this video, we will conduct an autopsy on this film, ripping it open for you to understand some of the vague concepts that have been suggested. We will also spare some time to explain the twisted ending and its possible implications. As long as you are not too squeamish about gruesome violence in films, sit tight as we explore a horrifying masterpiece!

When I watched it my first thought was that it was one of the best Lovecraft movies I'd seen in a while. The monsters almost perfectly resemble Ghouls, a race of subterranean creatures which feast on human corpses. Their power over the leadership in the city would thus be due to the vast numbers gathered underground, that there are so many Ghouls if they weren't appeased they'd easily overwhelm the Human world. They are also sometimes connected with Elder Gods, which could explain the curse carried by the killer and train guard, or even that this curse was keeping the entire city in check.

The ghouls love in one part underneath one city, so by default there are not that many ghouls there, also they may be physically strong they are not that fast, it's their supernatural power that seems to cause fear. So the idea they could overwhelm human society as a whole is a tad much The general idea is that they have mind controlling abilities and can give immense strength and power to people who serve them voluntarily. So in order to survive they live in the shadows and influence events in their tribes area via both mind control and bargaining with human servants. Before they did it with local native tribes, now they do it with the local city government.

A couple of things. First off, my impression of the creatures, even though they might look frail to some, is that they are extremely strong and powerful. The train conductor is much stronger than a normal man, yet when the monsters are nearing the train to board it he does not want to be anywhere near them. They are clearly dangerous and everyone keeps their distance. Second, the creatures must have some form of mind control over the people who serve them. There is no way that Leon would willingly serve the monsters or others that support them after they murdered his girlfriend. I think one of the monsters put something inside him when he was captured, and I think they did the same with Mahogany.

I don't think they have mind control or even need it. They just make people shit themselves in fear... additionally I think both characters (the previous train conductor and the new one) realizes that if they DON'T feed the monsters, they might leave the train tunnels and go out into town.

"Why do people love this movie?" Personally, I love the mystery of it. Who was Mahogany, who and what exactly is the conductor? Is he human, is he a demon? There is so much left to the viewers to theorize about and the terrifying monsters aren't over explained or exposed.
@theniceguy7824
@theniceguy7824 3 жыл бұрын
The only thing I'll disagree with you on is the monsters being "terrifying". The monsters in this movie were extremely weak and frail looking. The looked so unthreating that it's an honest question as to why they are feeding them to begin with. In Truth the conductor is way more terrifying than the actual monsters, just in questioning wtf is he so strong. The last 10 minutes of this movie are honestly the weakest in my opinion. It's still a good movie and a good twist, something visually interesting or something showing how these monsters are any kind of actual threat would have been better.

@@theniceguy7824 The book is much better and makes more sense. The monsters are indeed frail, but they're closer to Gods than monsters. And Mahogany and the conductor "serve" them as such. They're not just mindless creatures that they're feeding to keep away from humanity. They are ancient beings that presumably built the world (or at least America) in some way or another. The book also features a gigantic, Lovecraft style creature that's presumably the hivemind type God, which when Leon sees it's horrific "awe" he is immediately driven insane and converted to serve them. Which makes way more sense than him just suddenly agreeing to become the killer of innocent people just to serve a bunch of mindless creatures that live under the subway that just murdered his girlfriend.

So happy to see someone give this movie the love it deserves! Personally my take on why they don't kill the reptilians is that they possess some sort of magical powers that allows them to grant things like supernatural strength to their followers, and more importantly, I think they in a sort of "demonic", though I don't think they're demons per se, pact they grant prosperity and riches and so on to their servants. So why would the humans bite the hand that feeds so to speak? Of course nothing is without a price, and I assume in exchange for at least the super strength granted to the butchers they develop that disease that Mahogany has.

Do you remember how the Butcher had those growths on his chest? And how Leon got marked by the creatures when he got captured? Leon was acting strange/obsessed even before that had happened so I think they infected him with something that full-on changed him both physically(hence why the Butcher and the Conductor are so strong) and mentally as to why they are so willing to kill people to feed such seemingly weak creatures. I don't think it is as much a necessity to protect humanity as it is the creatures using humans to bring them food. I believe the Detective was involved solely to protect herself and her family/friends(from the Butcher/Conductor) , not that there was some massive conspiracy or Cult that worshipped/protected the creatures. And as to why they need to eat humans, it has everything to do with their Immortality. I think they require human flesh to endure so it's a never ending cycle of killing humans to both satiate and keep them alive.

"Please step away from the meat!" One of my favorite lines in this film is spoken by the midnight train "conductor" toward the end of the film, who happens to be none other than Tony Curran, better known as the vampire Marcus in the second Underworld film, as well as the vampire (see a trend here?!) Priest in the second Blade movie. I'm also amused to no end that Brooke Shields has a minor role throughout TMMT; my initial reaction was that her film career had completely tanked, but after seeing this movie a couple of times, I don't think that's it...this is a better film than most would realize, and with a little re-work/editing, I almost think that if it were re-released, it would cement its place in the cult film genre due in no small part to Bradley Cooper's star power, to say nothing of Vinnie Jones and even Brooke Shields.

Was it ever explained how the killer and conductor had superhuman strength? Or what those things on the killer's chest was? Probably a growth for every person murdered. And it seems like this would be an appropriate place for murderers, rapists, and pedophiles to go instead of innocent people. At least presumably innocent.

Vinnie Jones's facial expression in this movie is somewhat funny to me, as if he's trying to be serious. Each time he appears with his meat mallet, I immediately imagine he's standing there... with a chicken leg on his hand.

I think a slightly higher budget would have done the film good. Then there wouldn't be the question at the end, why they make such a big effort, with the subway plans and the secret human slaughters, just to feed 4-5 reptile-man-monsters.

It might be that they provide something in return for feeding them to the local gov (maybe even national) I could potentially see the plot touching upon some secret society cult that keeps them safe and secret in exchange for something if a sequel ever got made.

@juanausensi499 3 жыл бұрын
@@FieryFlamingFajitas There can't be lots of them because then the meat supplied wouldn't be enough. It's clear to me that the subterranean creatures hold power over the human rulers, a power that is not just brute force. Or maybe it's just the power of tradition: that's how things always have been (because there creatures predates humanity) and rulers and leaders just roll with that.

was the bad guy (killer) actually a bad guy or just someone stuck in a bad situation ? what ever it is ,that has a hold over the humans,to appease the creatures must be so bad ,that they feel they have no hope but to appease them......you can see from the looks on there faces, they don't actually like doing what they are doing, but have no choice but to do it.....look is always unfeeling and disgusted by it,i suspect the killer was hoping photographer would best him,as he knew he would finally be free in death from doing these horrible things,,and this is the real reason why he smiled.
