I'm often questioned on why don't I do pest control shooting with smaller, non centerfire cartridges. Well I do, I just don't post many videos with them because it's mainly small scale shooting. This contracted shoot was all about bulk numbers, part of a professional pest control program with a local rabbit plague. Plenty of shooting action on this one for you all to watch. The little Lithgow LA101 rimfire rifle chambered in .22LR was on song with the Pulsar Thermion 2 XP50 thermal scope.
Rabbits shot are utilised where possible for the pot or pet food. But with a large cull like this many just go into landfill.
Notable mention to the other pro shooters working this job. Fantastic to see the dedication and professionalism displayed on the program. There was a very notable drop in rabbit numbers by the end of the shoot. Satisfying to see the direct impact a coordinated shooting cull can achieve.
Some of the other guys shoot fully suppressed which was cool as. Tools of the trade were obviously .22 rimfire rifles shooting subsonic hollow points. And a few high powered air rifles for locations more noise and impact sensitive around structures etc. Thermal is nearly mandatory with the long grass. Running lights or night vision scopes is a real problem with this amount of ground cover.

Good video Nathan to me back to the 70’s we’re you could shoot 500 rabbits a day every day 365 days a year in Victoria and NSW. We used to burn out Barrels in Our Bruno no1’s .22’s regularly and that’s no exaggeration. We used to sell them to our local Butcher for 5 cents a pair of Rabbits and a box of .22 Bullets were 25 cents for 50 rounds. Until they introduced the viruses that wiped out 99% of the Rabbits in Australia. You now only get pockets of Rabbits like the Proptery your were on! Ha mate, what brand and were did you get the shooting stick setup please? Cheers up the good videos.

4:44 can't tell if that was the rabbit screaming out or if it was the whizz of a ricochet. Eastern cotton tails ( similar species ) are native to where I live and a major nuisance to my garden in the spring and summer, and are constant headache the rest of the year. I can only imagine what they do in Australia where they have no native predators to keep their numbers in check.
@EDGEoftheOUTBACK

I think it could have been a ricochet on that one. 22LR is notorious for it.

Everyone overlooks that little .22 LR. You'll hear about the .270, .280, 5.56, and blah blah blah. Meanwhile, the .22 long just keeps on going. Keep it within its performance envelope and it will perform as well as anything. Just ask the rabbits.

*Permission to ask a stupid question 🙋... When you're hunting wild dogs/cats, rabbits etc. Do you have to remove/dispose of the dead animals from each area or is that up to property owners? Great channel, keep em coming mate!
@EDGEoftheOUTBACK

That answer depends on the property. Generally they are left out of sight or the farmer puts them in a hole (larger animals)

A semi - auto is great for rabbit hunting . I use a suppressed ERMA EM 1 in that purpose with a 10 rds magazine . But I love my CZ 452 bolt action rifle too . Unfortunately , my CZ is the first model ( 1947 ) and can’t be suppressed and can be used only on large private properties .
@KolyaNickD

I notice people are now using lever release semi autos in Australia. This is possibly a superior mechanism in the darkness - a little more control. A pump action better still..
@raoulvolfoni1800
@raoulvolfoni1800 2 жыл бұрын
@@KolyaNickD The semi auto offers less recoil than a bolt action rifle . It’s good for double tap ’cause you stay on the target . It’s useful in case of multiple targets too .

I've seen those rifles with the thumb release cycle. I'll take accuracy over speed any day of the week. Interesting idea though. As for pump actions they fit poorly with a thermal unfortunately.

Hi, I shoot a .22lr with the same ammo. I find it hard to hit anything past about 50m because of the bullet drop. Can I ask what distance you zero the scope at? And how do you practice holding over?
@JohnWilliams-iw6oq
@JohnWilliams-iw6oq 2 жыл бұрын
Me too, at 30M the bullets are key holing. BRNO model 2. 70M I hold over, 25M I hold under. Beyond 70M it's pot luck with the same hold over scoring a good kill or a total miss. It gets frustrating.
@davidblake8612
@davidblake8612 2 жыл бұрын
@@JohnWilliams-iw6oq Yeah I hold over the amount I think I need to, and miss. And it's damn hard to see if I'm above or below - often the ground is soft, so no dust plumes. So I don't bother shooting much over 50m now. Also, I don't have thermal gear, just a conventional torch, so it's hard to get in close in the more open areas.
@metubewot
@metubewot 2 жыл бұрын
Put a target up and zero at 50 yds. put one at 25, 75 and 100 and shoot 5 shot groups, it should show you where to aim. BTW the 50 is up to you, I used to do most of my shooting at 50 or less when pest controlling. A scope with mill dot reticle helps too.
@EDGEoftheOUTBACK
@EDGEoftheOUTBACK 2 жыл бұрын
50m bang on zero and know your points of aim. A ballistic chart can tell you a lot. Remember these rounds are a similar speed and velocity to what the 22 NRL and PRS guys run out to 200m. Just need to know the ballistics 👌
