Predator Hunting Wild Dogs in Australia

Wild dogs - The plan was a sit and wait in a location the wild dogs have been spotted on a dead cow. I have had my 4G trail camera on this pile for a few weeks. In the week prior to this hunt I had regularly been seeing a few younger dogs on a cow carcass each afternoon. The week before I had shot another dog here with my 6.5PRC. My son in tow for his first experience.
This time I was back with my 6mm BR with intention to remove another or two of these troublesome predators. Watch the video and you'll see how everything unfolded to plan, which is rare but no complaints.
All animals shot are in alignment with the NSW DPI Wild Dog Management Plan 2017 - 2021.

it doesnt even have to be wild dogs. I live in the country where theres no leash laws. My neighbors lets their hunting dogs run loose at night and as a free range guinea fowl farmer it doesnt end well for me. Ive lost almost my whole flock to those dogs, down to my last two, thankfully a male and female.

"Boring as batshit". I love it. Is that an Australian expression or is it unique to you? I found your channel last week and watch as many of your videos as I can. I like your explanations, and you certainly can turn a phrase. Here in the States, wild hogs, foxes and coyotes are a real problem, and they are hunted constantly because of all the damage they do to property and livestock. And of course, there are those who cannot abide killing those poor creatures. They do not educate themselves about the harm caused by these animals. Thank you for the great content.

I think it's just Aussie slang that one 😂. Really glad you enjoy the video's, great to hear. We have many issues with these introduced species in Australia. There's definitely people who have not taken the time to understand the "why" and just think it's all mindless shooting. Couldn't be further from the truth although I absolutely enjoy my hunting and work.

10 years or so back I used to hunt a lot of ferals in QLD, including dogs. I set up trail cams a few days out to see which water holes they went to first thing every morning. Up here they often ran in packs (bob tails). When I found their water hole I would go in and get in position around 4AM and wait. I would ID the alpha male and take it out first. The others would not know what to do and hang around long enough for me to pick then off. I used a .243 Weatherby Vanguard on a bi-pod. Average range was 70-100 metres.

From eating on the job to getting the job done. I watch because of the no frills approach. There's a few others on KZfaq like that. Condensing it all down to 15 minutes or less, super effort. @@EDGEoftheOUTBACK thank you brother, I might just have to get the day timeskill level up o speed for the time being…! Last question; I have recently saw a dog wander out of some scrub not far from my bolt hole up in the sticks. 100-150m from the house. He was scenting, scanning then retreated, I figured I’d get ready to have a crack on the 3rd night at sunset but as you’d expect, that opportunity didn’t present. What would be you best couple of whistles/brands that might coax him out?

Hey Nate, noob questions here - do you set the scope at 200m when you have setup the overwatch spot, and then back it off to 100m for night, or on the scope do you know where to aim lower/higher depending on range, or finally, is bullet drop not that important with that particular type of weapon?

Did you swap the scope from glass to thermal on the 6BR in field? Or did you take two rifles? Just curious how you would swap scopes in the field and know that’s it’s zeroed. Cheer, good hunting as well.

Absolutely I swapped the scope in the paddock. Carried the thermal gear in. I just use really good rings and return to zero has been excellent 👌

Here in the states we have a terrible problem with feral pigs and with feral dogs. They start out as pets that are abandoned and are stray, but over time they multiply and within a few generations they are feral. My hunting club covers over 400 acres of pristine forest between North Carolina and Virginia near the Dismal Swamp state park, which is a huge chunk of the east coast. Look on a map and you’ll see. We have these feral dogs now competing with the feral hogs and coyotes. They displace and harm the native species of all wildlife from birds nest getting eggs eaten to deer losing fawns. We put a bounty for them in the clubhouse. $1/feral dogs and $2/hog. Coyotes are in balance so we leave them alone.

That's a good solution indeed, well done. Not to sound like a tool, but here 400 acres is quite small. Things are often quite vast in Australia. This particular property is not far from town and is quite small at 500 acres. Most area's I'm hunting are 10,000 acres plus. You should visit sometime, Australia is awesome 💪

@@EDGEoftheOUTBACK Yes. 400 acres isn't large, but it's pristine and full of game. Australia is on my bucket list for sure.

A good video to show the likes of me that it's not all beer and skittles. Just curious if those mozzies settle down after a time or are they that vicious all night? And what do you do to protect yourself? As I'm guessing you want to avoid anything that gives of a scent and therefore your position. Thanks again.

Thanks mate. I cover myself in Bushmans and the mozzies when this thick still find a hole. You need to get the wind in your favour anyway. Won't matter if you smell like whatever. Dogs will smell you.
