The Fanboy is a large air cleaner that we built to rapidly remove all of the airborne sawdust that drifts around our shop when we are making things. It is super-powerful and looks appropriately awesome up on our shop wall. All of this is important.
In this video we illustrate and discuss the serious respiratory dangers of sawdust and why an air cleaner in your shop is so important. There are also dinosaurs. Links to the Fanboy's major components below.
Components Used:
iPower 12 Inch 1060 CFM Inline Duct Ventilation Fan - www.amazon.com/iPower-Inline-...
110VAC Input, 0-130VAC (500W) Variac - www.amazon.com/YaeCCC-Transfo...
Alpinetech PLN-22A Red 22mm 120V AC/DC LED - www.amazon.com/Alpinetech-PLN...
MERV 13 Air Filter* - www.amazon.com/Tier1-Replacem...
Washable Air Filter* - www.amazon.com/WEB-Filter-Plu...
Vinyl Printer Sticker Paper - www.amazon.com/Premium-Printa...
* Our filters are 20x20 and that works well for the Fanboy box size. The washable filter is GOLD and will protect your more expensive 1-micron filter. And your 1-micron filter is going to cost more because of the level of filtering it does. But use whatever brands you like to make your version work.

Remarkable. I’ve installed same fan in my shop but was venting through side of building. This created a negative airflow requiring a outside air intake to compensate yet still would draw attic air and hot air from outside (Florida). I will be reworking my system to your design. Many thanks!

Just found your channel while looking for air cleaning options. Decided to subscribe for the following three reasons: 1. Nicely detailed info on the build itself without being dry or droning on. 2. The healthy amount of militaria in the shop (I see those FARP/Deck helmets!) 3. The healthy amount of Star Wars injected into all the things. Cheers and Thanks!

I was looking for ways to clean smoke from wood burning out of the shop. I'm grateful for the info you provided I like the simplicity of circulating air. I'm in Canada. It's cold and I don't want to lose the heat I have spent good money on out a vent out of the shop.
@AtomicDairy
@AtomicDairy 2 жыл бұрын
We have the opposite problem where we live. For us it's high heat in the summer and we don't want to exhaust our shop air either. So re circulation air was our plan. The FanBoy does a fantastic job of cleaning the dust out of the air and we use it every time we are cutting wood in the shop.

I like it. Did the same in my shop but found that the jet stream of air caused a low pressure venturi effect drawing dust laden air into its path and deposited dust along its way. The remedy was take the flow of air via ducting to the far end of the shop.
@AtomicDairy
@AtomicDairy 4 жыл бұрын
Many thanks! We've done some testing as well and the bucket "tube" we have on the back of the fan seems to be working for us. Most of our sawdust-generating tools are toward the intake of the fan but your experience makes me want to test for the venturi effect you are seeing when we run at higher speeds. Thanks for the insight!

@AtomicDairy

Interesting. Looks like Amazon no longer sells that filter. I did a quick check and Home Depot sells the Eco Plus washable filter. I think it's the same filter but if it isn't it's very close. It's a MERV 8 filter and it does a great job of filtering out the larger particles to that the second filter can last longer. I wash mine out twice a year and it still works great!

Are you running that fan when working with your rattle cans (spray paint)?... I'm looking at building a small spray booth, and I'm concerned about the potential for fire (or worse) breaking out while using an inappropriate fan type. Do you have another setup or have you found this setup is perfectly adequate and safe with volatile paints, etc?
@AtomicDairy
@AtomicDairy 3 ай бұрын
We do. Never had a problem with spray cans and fan use at the same time. And the filter does collect some of the paint fumes.

@@AtomicDairy - I've got a very small space and I'm trying to come up with my own system that would allow for good air flow AND not blow up... Of course, the first ideas always include tools already available (for example, a bathroom fan), but I want to make sure unplanned fire won't be in my future. I also like inline duct fans (very commonly used for grow tents and relatively affordable), but I'm thinking of putting my spray booth right in front of a window, so that I can port the fan directly out with minimal ducting (likely just ported straight out, if possible). If you or anyone has any advice on a relatively safe/compact fan unit that doesn't involve open sparking motors, I'd love to hear it? Thanks for the reply!

Thanks for sharing atomic people Re your CFM rating You may need to mitigate for air leaks around filter placement, seals, along with non lamellar flow drag imposed by the shift from square to round ducting, then stacked filters also affecting more than a single equivalent thickness filter Saying this it's a great build and a nice alternative to the usual axial stuff Check out bill pentz if you haven't already.
