ep15: CRT's are beautiful creatures.
Heavy as all hell, but beautiful.
This particular television is a Sony Trinitron Wega KV-HR series model.
It kicks some serious ass, and I thought I'd show it to you.
This video jumps from my current TV all the way back to my CRT

Very few people can hear that strange indescribable high pitched whine of a CRT starting up. For a while I thought I was crazy as I would be in a room with 10 other people and be the only one to hear it.

Yes, that sound is real. It's produced by the horizontal deflection coils and the flyback transformer. It's frequency is about 15KHz, it sits on the upper end of human hearing, and that's why not everyone can hear it. I've come across some phone chargers that make a faint similar sound.

No response time, big deal, some LED screens have 5ms response time. Better color depth? I don't know, my CRT monitor definetely has less contrast than my LED screen. True black color? True. Any resolution? My CRT starts to flicker at high resolutions, and it's very very annoying

My granny had a 90s big screen tv that my family had in the living room for a little while. And I'm 15 years old, and I'm one of only very few in my generation who know what the hell a CRT is. My reason to prefer CRT TVs is because of how retro games, more specifically 16 bit games look on CRT TVs compared to LCD or LED screens, the colours look better on CRTs, they usually look all either washed out or blown out on LCD/LED screens, there's often a loss of colour in said screens as well, but the colour is only one of the reasons, retro games on modern TVs also tend to look blocky and not as good as I remember, on a CRT screen the inherent blurriness tends to smooth out the rough edges and give that unique retro-game look that I love a whole lot but will most likely never be replicated (no, Indie games more often than not DON'T capture the look of retro games faithfully) But the worst offender is not the look, but the input lag and the lack of compatibility with light guns in modern LCD or LED screens, and even in HD CRTs... With all of that in mind, I much prefer my gameplay on a Standard Definition CRT TV, they're the best for the kinds of games that I enjoy the most...

@toshineon 8 жыл бұрын
+Ruko Michiharu LCD's are horrible at running anything that isn't their native resolution. A modern Full HD TV has 1920x1080 resolution, and PS1 games, for example, often run at 320x240. That is some heavy upscaling required.
@tristan0312ify

Michirin9801 the colors are good on CRTs, but even better on OLED screens, pair that with the highs resolution on the OLEDs, and that's why it's my favorite. LED/LCD screens to me are ugly, and CRTs make that super annoying hissing sound, plus are completely inconvenient.

The last CRT TV I had was an iLo DTV2794. It was able to get digital channels (ATSC) over the air, but even though it took HDTV signals, they were down-converted and cropped to fit the square 4:3 display. These days, I have a 720p Dynex LCD TV. That also doubles as a PC monitor, and even has HDMI.

As an 18 year old (1998) who was born at the end of the 90's, my obsession with light gun games (like Time Crisis, HoTD, and Virtua Cop) will always keep my interest peaked in these beasts. What you said at the beginning of the video was spot on, it comes from an age with less nuance and worry, and reminds us of the simplicity of life, and technology at the same end. Thanks GHG for reminding me of better times. Running MAME and an IR LCD "Light gun" will never compare to using an old CRT in the wee hours of the morning to play Time Crisis 2 on a PlayStation 2.

Have three of the best hd crt's of all time myself. A Sony XBR 960. A Loewe Aconda 38". And a Panasonic AT H3015w broadcast monitor. They are truly amazing, especially when the service menu and normal menu settings and the screen and focus dials/knobs are perfectly set. Regular degaussing via a large degaussing coil is also a big boon. The only great hd crt's that I believe I do not yet have are a Sony BVM D32E1WU or A32E1WU, and a Loewe Aconda 30" flatscreen. I have two of them hooked up to PC's via Extron scalers and they handle movies and games so damn well, and they do not get blurry up close like lcd's do.

Also it's good to see I'm not the only one that notices the benifits of using a CRT for video playback, most other videos on the subject matter focus purely on the gaming aspect.
@TurboPikachu

You forgot to elaborate on how the majority of all CRT sets also have vastly superior audio to speakers on even the most high-end LCD/LED sets ever made. This is thanks to the CRT's front-to-back size, allowing for enormous speaker drivers. I've never heard a LCD/LED ever come close in audio quality to a CRT because a flat-panel is just that: flat. XD I'm gonna need to buy a soundbar for my 2012 37" Vizio E371VL 1080p LCD HDTV.... While on the other hand, my parents' 1988 27" JVC 480i CRT TV already has spectacular sound, particularly in the bass department.

Playing Playstation 1 and N64 is not the same as playing on a PDP / LCD / OLED / I had a newer version (lighter grey 500 pound trinitron) of the TV you have at 1080p, I think the native resolution was the same 1440x1080. I love 120hz 144hz LCD LED monitors- but they still have issues with low resolution content and you will always have contrast issues. You know what I wonder, how would an HDMI upscaler work on a modern HD CRT Television?

CRTs don't have a native resolution, only maximum resolution and refresh rates, unless the TV somehow adds limitations. There's no need for upscalers on CRTs, it will display standard definition just fine. It's effectively shooting a dot at the phosphors on the back of the screen, one line at a time, if the resolution is lower it just has to draw fewer lines. eg: if you had otherwise identical CRT TVs - one supported HD and one standard definition, and fed both a standard definition signal, they'd look identical.

Its pretty hard to get burn in. You would have to leave your screen static for ages.
@ziggy2489
@ziggy2489 7 жыл бұрын
I hear a lot of the OLED TV's are rated with a minimum of 2000 hours before burn in becomes a problem. And I would assume that would have to have a lot of static time on maximum brightness to do it even then. And considering how bright OLEDS tend to be you could just turn down the brightness and still get an amazing picture without having to be paranoid about burn in

Actual power bill difference is hardly noticeable. You are mainly paying for A/C, heat, and light. A 22" LCD panel is very uncommon for a TV. Most panel TVs are bigger and use about 125-260 watts.

It may have been used for Sims, but the music at the beginning was composed by Richard Strauss. Its title is "'Also', sprach Zarathustra". It was used as film music for 2001 Space Odyssey, or 2010, or whatever the film title was. I guess the director was Stanley Kubrick.

Darker blacks and better colours can give more depth...but other than that, I think it's just a placebo effect the one you are having :) After all, what makes a great difference is the composition of the shot, the lighting, the depth of field and many other factors that exist in cinematography but not in the tool you are using to watch it. Modern CGI doesn't generally have less depth, it's just that people rarely care about that nowadays. :(

well it seems you have never experienced the tru color quality of OLED displays because the blacks are deep and the colors are more organic which is what the "O" stands for which means each pixel emits its light independently and organically and has a very high contrast ratio compared to any other display out there as well as higher pixel density you can look up the specs of any OLED display and find that they are the future of display tech leaving everything behind in its wake
