My grandfather was Jimmy Vernon, owner of Vernons grill. The first photo of the lady behind the counter was my Great Grandmother Kathleen Brown Vernon. She and her husband Willis opened Vernon’s grill in 1944 and built this building in 1946. So many treasured family memories!

Are those the same Vernons from Vernon's Produce. I used to eat there and Hillbilly Hide-A-Way all the time. Then I'd go to Peter Rabbit's for a couple cold ones

The Milk Bar Restaurant reminds me of how restaurants used to be back in the 70's when I was a kid and there used to be a lot of them in the part of Oklahoma where I live here but there are only a couple of them still open and going today, I really enjoy older style restaurants here in other areas of the country along with old general stores, theaters, houses, buildings and other historic places from the past thank you John. 🇺🇲🤠🇺🇲

I've lived in North Carolina all my life and I've never had the chance to explore all of these wonderful places. I hope and pray that I do someday. Because I love these old restaurants and these old general stores. Our Country needs more of this. A big shout-out thank to everyone at the Milk Bar for everything you all do. And John thank you so very much for everything you do. Everyone's hard work and dedication is outstanding 💪 👍 May GOD bless you all and keep you all safe and healthy where ever you go 🎉❤😊

My sister lives In Walnut Cove and when I visit this is the place I eat at. The food is great, service is warm and friendly with great prices. If your near by stop in you will not regret it. Everything rocks but the catfish bits are out of the world.

I grew up with the owners, Debbie and Jerry. Her’s was my second home matter of fact and I LOVED her mom’s cooking!! She learned from the BEST and she even baked my wedding cake. I KNOW the food is good!❤️🤗

I absolutely, positively LOVE LOVE LOVE The Milk Bar! Their specials are hearty and quite cost effective. Everything is good, here, but the catfish nuggets, the beef over rice, the homemade soup, the fried chicken livers, blackeyed peas and corn, cooked cabbage, fried okra, pintos, slaw, salmon patties, mashed potatoes, chicken pie and those fried cornbread cakes are OUT OF THIS WORLD! Try to hit them once a week - haven't been as often as I would like the past three years or so, but I am going to try to make up for that!!!

That is what I love about east Tennessee and western North Carolina. Plenty of mom &pop places to visit and eat. I love old diners . If I lived close to the milk bar they’d see me every week 😊

They have outstanding food. I remember eating there as a small child when it was Vernon's Grill. They used to have a juke box on the left as you start into the back and my sister, Cousin Tommy and I used to play it. Recently, I heard Johnny Paycheck's song "Don't Take Her She's All I Got." I think I first heard it on the juke box at Vernon's years ago.

I went to junior high school in Walnut Cove and still blessed to live near it! Love that these places are still around and the egg on that burger is really good! Heck it all is 😂 Kathy the one praying owns a antique shop right up the street from them that is called "Just Plain Country Store" and she has a lot of great things in there and she is so sweet 😂 We all are just country and down to earth and the town of Walnut Cove is just a great place in general!

My little town of Aviston Illinois had a cafe like this. Mainly breakfast and lunch. Angel Haven cafe then a couple more names after sold. If you couldnt find a seat you sit at a random table with others and youre bound to share who your relatives are and most likely your mama and papa knows their mama and papa.

I know it’s way east for you but you should come visit the Beefmaster in Wilson NC….small place only serving cut to weight ribeye, backed potatoes, Texas toast and a salad bar… super simple but fantastic
