Welcome back to my third update on The Minimal Phone. The Minimal Phone Company has been pretty silent for the past month, but I've noticed some interesting updates on their website that I want to share with you.

Not a lot has been announced in the minimal phone discord - I think we're all waiting to see a working prototype. Hopefully soon! The information there is pretty much the same as in the indiegogo updates (the colors, schedule, new design). Since the last update they haven't said too much, but that things are progressing as scheduled.

They have confirmed that they are "expecting a prototype that closely resembles the final product soon" but that they don't have a date yet.

Great vid. From an email, 17th May: 'As we approach production, we will email all our customers to update their order with their choice of color and the option to include a front-facing camera or not.' Front camera been discussed for some time.

Though, the front camera's gonna be a bit difficult to use if one videocalls with the device. It's similar to the placement on the Qin F22 Pro.

I like to see the front camera go and let them get a small e-ink screen on the back that is big enough too see some one face and shoulders.

After lurking around the dumbphone reddit for a while now, this is the perfect phone for me. I'll be waiting for real world feedback and independent reviews before buying though. Fancy renders in the videos are not enough, we need to see the real prototype. Fingers crossed it actually gets released and delivers the specs they have promised.

Hello Laura, Thanks for your update ! Do you know whether the keyboard will be touch-sensitive, as on the BlackBerry Passport and subsequent models? I dream of being able to find this practicality on more recent phones; not only the fact of being able to assign shortcuts to physical keys (which is already very interesting), but also of being able to scroll with it, and of being able to erase text by passing the finger from right to left on the keyboard... In any case, it's interesting to see people taking advantage of the void left by Blackberry (personally, the Passport remains the absolute reference in terms of screen, and fluidity thanks to the BlackBerry OS10)...

I don't think it will have this capability but I did see some backers on the discussion board asking for it. Maybe they will take it into consideration for future versions of the device. I really hope this phone does well and motivates other companies to create similar devices.

You would think that quite a lot more would happen to this device in the last three months wouldn't you? I'm still skeptical that this thing is going to materialise at all. It it does then will it be exactly like they are confirming here or something else? I'm still not convinced with this at all?

Me neither. With all the effort going into the marketing they could be more transparent with their communication.

Watching and waiting for a prototype. I suspect it's vaporware. Whatever the case, you have a very captivating and pleasing face to watch. Keep up the good content.

As a Sailfish OS user and before that a meego and Symbian^3 user what I look for on a minimal phone is being released from google and apple which is a way to say PRIVATE... I tested the lightphone II and am planning on buying a punkt... this move to android 14 does not sit well with me... in the same way the lightphone III and the new punkt do not sit well with me... they are starting to look more like hipster devices than modern but truly minimalist and privacy respecting devices... In know this is all towards being able to launch with very limited resources... but this android 14 news just plummeted this option to the bottom... I think I'll just buy a xperia 10 V install SFOS and have it app-less with just telegram and uber from the browser as I have been doing the last 4 years

I agree with you about the way these devices are moving. I loved my Punkt MP01 and tried the MP02 but found the OS was a complete downgrade. I am using more and more of my older devices and I find that getting away from Google and Apple is the way to go.

We have reached a point where smartphones have tried to become anything and everything. Just let my alarm clock do its job; don't try to replace it lol. And once it starts replacing conventional things, it comes for your brain, then the AI starts taking action on your behalf and does all the thinking for you. Being able to take a break and going out in nature away from the technology is so peaceful once you realize that YOU DON'T ACTUALLY need it. The E-ink and the low refresh rate will make watching content harder and will make it less immersive. which is still positive despite the phone having an Android OS. I am looking forward to this phone; I hope that it doesn't disappoint.

No it's not bad. I hope you get the device when they say they will deliver it. I am just cautious and don't want people to lose money if it doesn't come out. I will stay on top of their updates. If it does come out I will probably get one too 😉
