At the start of May we'll release a really amazing puzzle/sudoku hunt by Matyas Martinka. First correct solution wins some merch. Any correct solution gets a shout-out on the channel!

Today's puzzle features a pretty incredible discovery by constructor Peter Veenis. Can you figure out how a Miracle Square works?! You can play it at the link below.
app.crackingthecryptic.com/su...
Rules:
Normal Sudoku rules apply. Digits in two cells separated by an X sum to 10. Digits in two cells separated by a V sum to 5. For any pair of orthogonally adjacent cells where both cells are coloured yellow: The digits cannot add to 5 or 10; the digits cannot be consecutive (ie cannot have a difference of 1); and the digits cannot have a ratio of 1:2 (so one digit cannot be double the other).
NB There is no negative constraint re the Xs and Vs. ie dominoes without an X, for example, can sum to 10 (or any other number).

Great puzzle, though I gave up after a while. But did get a bit on the way with the Miracle square, i got that 2 was a possible center, got that 4 could not go in the center, but missed that it only had two possible neighbors,, so had to be in a corner.

@@cypher686 In the earlier videos Simon preached diligence. Always when getting a number check what it means and never put pencil marks without cheking where they go. Then everybody and their uncle started to comment when he did not follow his own rules. Now he's stopped on preaching on diligence and let's the numbers fall down when they do. Nowadays he's griping what to do when there are obvious number somewhere he's missed before and that is quite funny.

@@Mattiasthesecond Simon is notoriously bad at simple scanning - you see this in almost every puzzle - and he's even commented on it a few times. Simon, Simon, Simon ... please, just use a pencil and paper (or Notepad) rather than trying to remember permutations in your head! 25:50, the reason you can't remember how it worked is because you don't have enough information to make it work. The miracle square can be flipped and flopped, rotated and reflected. What you've got in the grid has symmetric candidates, and without resolving one cell in r1 or r3 you've still got two options for it.

I 100% agree. This would have been a lot more interesting to watch if he had just written a note about the pattern of the magic square that can be rotated or flipped right when he discovered it (and put a version of it up in the video like he said he would). Still a great video as always.

"These two are a 5-6 which I don't know the order of...." bottom right box (9) holds a 6. Proving once again Simon doesn't look at the bottom right of a sudoku puzzle. Glorious addition to the canon! The untold mysteries of 9x9 continue to give and give. I thoroughly enjoyed that solve, clocked at 23:11. Once I found the unique miracle square up to rotations and reflections, the logic sort of dictated itself, the sign of a real master setter. It isn't always the degree of difficulty that makes a sudoku memorable. This discovery of the miracle square is not going to show up in puzzles like the celebrated Phistomephel Theorem does, but it is not easily forgotten. What a gem! Now I am going to watch Simon.

15:34 ... and for a change, I don't discount my good luck. I realized quickly enough that, up to isomorphism (i.e., accounting for rotations and reflections), there was probably only one possible Miracle Square configuration. I figured out the configuration while playing around in the center box ... and as luck would have it, the orientation I used ended up being the actual one needed for the solution (a 1-in-8 shot). [Naturally, I did get there logically; I did *not* just guess that was the correct orientation.] Fun puzzle ... now there's room for all sorts of 'Miracle Square' puzzles, just like we currently have 'Magic Square' puzzles. (Now for a puzzle where you're told that two Boxes are 'Magic' and 'Miracle' (one each), and the solver has to figure out where each is.) Until then ... wonderful discovery!

21:42 when you get the 79 you can force the 4’s into the top two corners in the center box, because the 79 are in the top 3 of the cross and the 4 goes between them. Then you disambiguate the final rotation.

This was yet another lovely puzzle. Simon, you could have resolved some of the boxes 4 and 5 quite early on. Once you had BOTH a 7 and 9 in row 6 of box 4, and knowing that 4 must go next to BOTH 7 and 9 (this was your first step in the solve), that forces the 4 in box 5 up into row 4. This resolves the 1-4 pair in box 4 and I think leads on to some more deductions around the middle of the puzzle. But who am I kidding? This one took me a couple of hours, and for you, it was about 20 minutes!

29:05 for me, took me a while to get a grasp on the magic square but once i got the VX's helped nicely to disambiguate the orientation (I ended up with 2 counter clockwise and one clockwise from the squares possible direction)

I got there in the end with help from Simon. Love the idea of a miracle square.

Finished the bottom box first after the top box gave me the breakin. Filled in the top box last.

A 20:56 for this one! Lovely puzzle, definitely needed to watch the beginning of the video to figure out what the final pattern of the square would be, but once I had that, I went through the rest of the puzzle with (relative) ease!

I feel so slow that it took me a couple hours to do this puzzle, but at the same time I am really happy to be able to have one more solve under my belt. I feel like I am slowly but surely improving.

Going back through older CtC videos I missed during a brief period last year I got out of watching on a daily basis (so sorry, Simon and Mark!), and just had to try this one... 31:23 was my time, and that includes around 19 minutes of figuring out what the yellow boxes could contain. This was a very cool puzzle!

My time is 50:53, but I didn't think of the miracle squares before ;) I enjoyed it so much! I think it's my favorite ever (with the first miracle sudoku)

30:53 "And those two are 5 and 6, which somehow I also don't know the order of..." he says when there's already a 6 in column 7... (r8c6) To be fair, it did only take a minute or two to figure that out.

In trying to wrap my head around the miracle squares, I just randomly plucked a 2 in the center and found a solution. With that in mind, I figured there must be many ways to form the square, as 2 was one of the more restrictive digits. Surely placing something like a 5 in the center would be even easier. Little did I realize...

Nice puzzle! I actually managed to solve it in under 29 minutes - when you figure out the only possible arrangement of digits in yellow squares (not counting its rotations & reflections), it gets quite easy :)
