Yes poor Percy.In real life Percy was afraid of Helen like Martha washington the daughter of the Cook who was 1 year older than Helen..But helen doesn't want to HIT HIM She wants to SPEAK WITH HER MOUTH.Poor girl! Poor helen was very frustrated in real life because she sensed that her parents had a way of communication she didn't have.When she was a little girl,Helen realized that her mother could move her lips and she tried to do the same without success ,without being understood and she started to throw tantrums because she believed that her parents played a game without her .Real helen wrote this in her biography.

Exactly! Plus Helen was very much pitied and spoiled by her parents, which was why she lashed out at Annie when Helen didn't get her way.

Yes Helen 's parents pitied for their little girl and indulged into every whim she had.They were too weak with her and for instance when Helen was sad or angry her father would give her candies and at family reunions people treated her like a puppy and gave her food from their plate caressing her head and laughing..An awful way of behaving with a deafblind child.

Anyone else notice how Percy starts falling asleep towards the end? I wonder if that was intentional or if the actor who played Percy really was tired and assumed that no one who saw the movie would notice because they'd be focusing on Annie and Helen.

+ZukoHalliwell I'm pretty sure that was part of the scene. If I remember correctly, he'd been sound asleep when Annie came in and dragged him out of bed to be part of this little 'game' she was playing to get Helen to cooperate.

Yeah, he was supposed to be sleepy in this scene. Just 'cause it's supposed to be the dead of night doesn't mean they filmed it then. Most likely it was done during the daytime.

I asked my brother Michael Darden, who played Percy, if she had good idea of what she was doing with her hands when you two had scenes together. He laughed so hard . He said little brother, " we both were just beginning to go through puberty. We were well aware of what no else could possibly imagine. We had the hots for each other genuinely. Our work ethic was peerless. We had great admiration and tremendous respect for Mr. Penn and Mrs. A. Bancroft. I ask everyone who watches this movie to call the film academy and request that my brother Michael Darden be honored with a special award that is given to young actors who have performed in a multi Academy Award winning film. A proper credit and a chance to honor our beloved Patty Duke.

Patty Duke (b. December 25, 1946) was 14 when THE MIRACLE WORKER was filmed in 1961; 15 when it was released in the summer of 1962; 16 when she won her Oscar in the spring of 1963. At any rate, she was in the midst of puberty, when the hormones are raging for either sex. That was Michael Darden's point, I believe.

If ever there was a superwoman that woman is Helen Keller. By her indomitable will she wrought a miracle, and when one ponders over her achievements, the brain is dazzled by the possibilities of the human mind. To us Socialist Helen Keller ought to be doubly precious, for she was our Comrade - let us glory in that.

Actually Helen was highly intelligent more intelligent than many kids her age and she had a great potential.She couldn't see or hear but she had a full life,she learnt how to talk with her mouth ,went to College and graduated with honors..She also wrote some books,visited soldiers during the second world war and did many other things for the blind and disabled people.She did all this thanks to Anne but she was a genius!

The whole point of this movie is to not feel pity for Helen or any other person with any type of disability. We are much more intelligent than given credit for. Even Annie mentions after Helen's mom says, "other children are not... IMPAIRED like she is." Annie responds by saying, "there's nothing impaired in that head! It works like a mousetrap." Our brains work differently compared to able-bodied people. It doesn't mean we're not as bright as them

I think Helen could hear and see a little bit. I dont understand how if she was completely blind and deaf she could have known annie was "teaching" percy. And how did she know how to spell if she hadnt been but 2 years old when she got sick. I think back then they werent advanced enough to detect minor abilities in the disabled.
@blueturtle3623
@blueturtle3623 4 жыл бұрын
The real Helen was entirely blind and deaf. She didn't know Annie was teaching Percy, she was feeling around to figure out what was going on. She didn't know how to spell. She eventually figured out "This combination of hand signals mean this thing" Also what does "minor abilities in the disabled" mean?
@thr33keys
@thr33keys 4 жыл бұрын
So, you are correct in saying that Helen probably didn't understand that Sullivan was teaching Percy, because Helen had no concept of what "teaching" was. But, you've probably seen how a child reacts when they are told that they cannot join in on a game: they usually get very upset. Sullivan excluded Helen from the "game" in order to make her want to come back and participate. As for how did she learn to spell, think of it this way: when babies are first learning to speak, they don't understand what any of the words or sounds mean. But if someone repeatedly says "milk" and gives you milk, eventually you will start to learn that this particular sequence of sounds, M-I-L-K, refers to that specific liquid. So if we can learn to associate a pattern of sounds with objects in the real world, then why not a pattern of hand shapes? Many children with autism actually learn to read simple words before learning to speak. You are also right to point out that medical technology wasn't as good back then, but it's actually pretty easy to figure out a person's level of vision and hearing using simple tests. Plus, Helen Keller eventually learned to communicate extremely well. She herself stated that she was completely blind and deaf.

She was basically like a feral cat. No one had ever trained her, didn't know how if she can't see or hear what you're trying to teach her. But they didn't even swat her hand if she was acting out. As Anne Bancroft's character says right before the famous breakfast scene..."she's a spoiled child" in a nutshell, handicaps aside, she was just spoiled because it was easier to calm her down by giving her what she wanted all the time...no tantrums that way.

@Nameless-ny8nk
@Nameless-ny8nk 10 ай бұрын
Any kid regardless of disability gets frustrated and angry when they can't express something and others in return can't understand them, and any kid who throws and tantrum and is comforted instead of disciplined for it will learn to throw tantrums to get their parents attention. Hellen couldn't comunicate, at all, and she was conditioned into getting comfort when she missbehaved, so the agresiveness is literally the only way she knew how to comunicate to others, just like babies do when they don't know how to talk yet, + the fact that the parents didn't know how THEY could comunicate through her and teach her right from wrong just made things worse. I mean, just imagine being hungry, or sick, or sad, and being completely unable to express those things to anyone with words or sign language, or writing, she couldn't ask for her wants OR needs in that state.

@mjremy How would you know ? If you know anything about life then you ought to know that in actual fact it's well known that in general in most cases ( in the west anyway ) many children with any form of disability are more spoiled and pampered by their parents than children who have no disabilities. It's human nature for parents to try to "make up for " or offer special treatment to any of their children who may have been born with any kind of debilitating condition .
