Ron was definitely toxic, Fernando just has a tremendous will to win and wears his heart on his sleeve. Lewis is also a very complex character, also ruthless in his desire to win, hard on his teammates and often a bit petulant and childish. Would Alonso have run riot in a Mercedes? Almost certainly.

@frosty snow It was Honda who stated that they will have the best engine in their second season. Just to add to Hungary 2007, if you see the pit stop you'll see that the tyres fitted to Alonso's car are used hards, while the tyres that the mechanics had there prepared for Hamilton were new softs (Softs were marked with a white line in one of the grooves back then). Imagine being on a pit stop, knowing that your teammate has ruined your lap previously and now you see that the team puts you worse tyres than your teammate. Wouldn't you be furious? Because I would.

i think that's a bit of a stretch to be honest. This year was the shortest winter break ever cuz of Covid and there were many many restrictions in developing the cars as I'm sure you know. The only car that looks visibly better than last year is Ferrari and thats because they kind of cheated by finding a loophole to change the entire rear of the car. They were behind the midfield last year but are going to be fighting for 3rd with Mclaren this year.... If you look at all the drivers who changed teams on the grid...everyone is kind of struggling these past 5 races. Vettel is supposed to be in the points but hasn't really been aside from Monaco. The drivers who are back on the grid this year are hardly driving impressively at all. Even Checo is struggling a little in the Red Bull. The only driver matching expectations, maybe even exceeding them, is Carlos Sainz. But again, Ferrari have changed their entire rear - its basically a different car this year compared to last. They would have much less problems adjusting the car to Carlos' liking since they were changin 1/3 of it anyways!! Danny should be scoring P5-P6 consistently but he's getting P7s and P8 excluding Monaco. I can't blame the P12 on him tho because it is the track with the sharpest turns which require confident braking - the precise thing he is struggling with in the new car. Plus, there is no overtaking so you're basically constricted to the pace of the car in front of you. He is visibly getting more confident in the car every race - he was only a second behind Lando today in FP1 - hopefully, he keeps that up throughout the weekend and on race day! Next year, when Mclaren change their car completely, Danny can give all his input. I will be shocked if he isn't smashing it next year and outperforming Lando. Everyone forgets that this Mclaren car has been the same for basically 3 years now - Lando has 2 more years of driving the same car than Danny!

You have articulated very well what I have thought for years. Yes Alonso has had some controversy in the past (like all multiple champions have at some point), but after his McLaren year people just assumed that it was always Alonso's fault. At McLaren, he was promised first driver status by Ron Dennis, which he was not given. He tried to force the issue, but most of the team just wasn't behind him. In the end you would have to say he was right, the McLaren's lost points to each other and Kimi snatched the title away from under their noses. Concerning the 2008 Singapore GP, personally I still believe he did not knew it. He had an opt out in his contract that said he could leave Renault (and go to Ferrari in 2009?) if they did not produce a winning car. All Flavio had to do was make Fernando win and he saw the chance at the Singapore GP. Flavio has always pulled these kinds of tricks, so this theory is at least consistent with Flavio's past behaviour. Of course he didn't knew Fernando would also win the next race in Japan! He spent four years at Ferrari, the first three of which were virtually without incident. (I mean come on people, why are team order suddenly a controversy at Ferrari?! That is just business as usual. It was just the way that Ferrari did it and the circumstance that made it very controversial. Alonso had nothing to do with this.) In the fourth year they produced a shitbox and he had enough, and fair play to him. McLaren Honda was just the most grandiose embarrassment I have ever seen the in the sport. Spending a billion dollars over three years to produce little more than an unreliable midfielder. I consider it a larger disaster than the well known Toyota fiasco, at least they produced some results. McLaren had again promised him everything under the sun and all Fernando got was a wet noodle of a car. That Fernando stuck around for as long as he did is nothing short of a miracle. Also, Fernando is no engineer, he doesn't build the car and certainly does not build the engine. Blaming Fernando for engine unreliability and aerodynamic inefficiency is just nonsensical. After 2007 the narrative was build and people have been trying to fit his whole career within this narrative ever since. No he is no likeable Felipe Massa or Jenson Button, but he is not the controversy magnet people see him as.

Unfortunatly many fans we see today have arrived since F1 shifted focus to be more media pleasing and less forefront of innovation (I would say 2016 onwards more and more) and these fans are not the same enthusiasts like the fans that came before. They saw Fernando in a dogshit car and him complaining about its dogshit characteristics, wthout understanding how different each teams car was to each other (especially in hybrid era). This is the unfortunate truth. I love to se this influx of new fans so more people can enjoy this sport, but the tradeoff with this type of more laid back fans is that the percentage of enthusiast fans drops.

Thanks for a balanced approach to Alonso's career. When Schumacher was dominating it really felt like he and Ferrari were just laughing at everyone and then Fernando walked in...He was not manicured in manner or appearance like Michael was. It was this underdog persona in such a young driver actually winning on the track that had us all screaming and fist pumping. I think it did alot for the sport after years of Williams BMW being so close but just not enough to really make Ferrari sweat. Frankly what happened after his championship seasons doesn't really matter to me because what he did those years seemed truly unbeleivable to many of us. He will always be a titan.

I really recommend watching his Prime Video series about himself in 2018-2020. Really does help see a more relaxed approach to who he is and why he acts how he acts too. And also shows how he has made progress as a person too. It really did make me appreciate him more. Though I agree that sometimes it´s really how he reacts to things that gets him in trouble, things that could have been avoidable.

Yeah, Alonso was struggling with brake and tyre temperature in the start of 2007. So much so that he and Hamilton had different brake suppliers for their cars from halfway till the end of the season. Alonso had to make the switch from Carbon Industrie brakes to Hitco brakes in Great Britain (9th race of the 17 race season), the Hitco brakes suited his energetic inputs, and he ran it till the end of the season (apart from Monza, where temperatures were quite high).

In the 2007 days those were extremely toxic for Fernando, experiencing the constant toxicity in the team. The briatore scandal in Singapore is another one that added huge toxicity towards Fernando and Briatore. Briatore had to win that season if not Renault was considering leaving Formula 1. But the fact that he did the best to make the team remain in Formula 1 costed him his formula 1 career and a ban from the Formula 1 paddock. Some of his comments towards his teams haven't been ideal. No team is slow on purpose, and when everyone is working at 100%, the last thing your colleagues want to hear are negative comment from the drivers. I get his frustrations but he could have handled some of the Mclaren Honda / Ferrari situations far better. If he'd focused on driving in 2007 he'd have probably won his third championship and then remained at Mclaren for 2008 where he would have had another chance to fight it out on track with Lewis potentially for yet another championship. 2007 had a negative chain reaction on his career. Mclaren could have done more to support him, maybe not. If he'd have remained at Mclaren for 2008 would he have still been looking to go to Ferrari for 2010? Who ultimately knows, but I doubt he'd have been in a place where he needed to go crawling back to what would be the woeful Mclaren Honda in 2015. If he'd have let his driving do the talking you never know, he could have had a shot at a drive with Redbull or even Mercedes. I highly rate Fernando and certainly think he's a far better driver than some of his stats suggest. It was fantastic to see him end Michael Schumacher's dominance during the 2005 season and it's great that he's back in F1. Fernando is a great character for F1 and I look forward to seeing what he can do for remainder of this season and hopefully next.

I don't think that Alonso could have remained at McLaren in 2008 at all. Maybe he could have kept cool during 2007, but the team would have naturally switched focus to their new star for the next year. If everyone could've waited one more year, the controversy wouldn't have existed (except for spygate, of course). Alonso wins the 2007 title, leaves in relatively good terms from McLaren and Hamilton wins the Championship next year.

He didn’t question it because there was still refuelling then, if he did and stayed out there’s every chance he would have ground to a halt. The crashgate strategy was thought up after quali by symonds and briatore, they did it because Alonso had a clause in his contract that if Renault didn’t win a race he’d be free to go. Given that was the motivation it would make absolutely no sense to tell Alonso the plan
@sarosh1
@sarosh1 3 жыл бұрын
Strategies like those weren't uncommon in the refueling era. Nelson Piquet finished 2nd right behind Hamilton after starting from 17th in Germany, he capitalized on a safety car much like Alonso had in Singapore. Strategy is king on a street circuit especially for drivers outside the top 10 because overtaking chances are nil, hence drivers differ to strategy which usually involves capitalizing on a safety car to leap frog those ahead. Was he aware of what had happened after the race? Absolutely, he mentioned that without luck on his side, he wouldn't have won the race.
@paulomarinho1963
@paulomarinho1963 3 жыл бұрын
Maybe because that was the best strategy, given the circumstances, the reason why de didn't question the decision of stopping early. It is called "undercut". Also, after the qualify, he was way out of position, so, for the undercut to work, he needed to stop very early, to recover the most positions possible, driving in clean air, before the first round of pitstops. So, contrary to popular belief, the strategy does not prove that Alonso knew about the planed crash. Note, I'm not saying that he didn't knew, but explaining why the strategy proves nothing, and, also, I'm not an Alonso fanboy, as I usually have been accused to be when I explain this fact.
@BayAreaBred
@BayAreaBred 3 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry but any idea that Alonso didn't know about the planned crash and was just on a weird undercut strategy is absurd. Starting the race lightly fueled and on super softs makes zero sense when starting from the back at Singapore where passing on track is impossible. You just waste all your weight and tire advantages stuck behind a train of slower cars. Track position is far more important than race pace when passing is difficult. Instead, Alonso predictably made virtually no progress at the race start, then stopped very early (not even 1/5 through the race), coming out in dead last place, several seconds behind the next car. Even if he quickly closes up, what then? He's stuck killing his tires fighting for 15th place through a train of heavy-fueled one-stoppers while the leaders disappear into the distance. A master strategist like Alonso would know this plan made zero sense except in ONE specific circumstance - if a safety car came out immediately after Alonso finished his out lap. Which as we all know is exactly what happened. I agree that Alonso at times gets an unfair share of criticism. But at Singapore 2008, of course he knew what was up. He barely bothers to deny it.

Ppl keep talking about the 'inner bastard' in schumacher. I've ALWAYS seen that in lewis. Let me explain. Aldas already showed what he'd done, on his DEBUT season with alonso, using his power within the team. Then comes heikki kovalinen, who despite the talent he showed in his f2 series, was played as the number 2 driver by mclaren, having given his spot to lewis many times, but he wasn't exceptional, so let's keep that aside. 2010, with one of the best teammates to have on the grid, Jenson Button, he screwed up yet again. Unfortunately for him jenson was british as well as a world champion. Lewis definitely overtook him in 2010, but by a narrow margin, only to have himself defeated in the very next season, by a mile. In fact, he didnt even end up third in the championship, whereas jenson came second after vettel's domination. And from here, he starts accusing the same team which chose him over the reigning two time world champion, of providing them with unequal engines, accused jenson of not playing fair, and using the upper hand in this, going as far as to try and prove it by posting a picture of engine performance outputs on twitter, all allegations were proven false, but i must agree, mclaren pit stops in 2012 were a disaster, which cost them a chinese grand prix[jenson chasing rosberg] and a podium in singapore[lewis third, jenson second, vettel first]. And this is where he'd had 'enough' and decided to leave. Get's into mercedes yet agin with the upper hand over nico rosberg because of niki's bias[ like it or not] and although toto wasn't there Yet, he had major influence on their decisions as their future team principal. Ppl accuse nico of cheating at monaco, perhaps it's true, not defending him, but he wasn't as dumb as lewis to make their dirty play as obvious at least, and it's till hard to accuse him. But i'll ccept, 2014, lewis definitely earnt it, depite all his dnf's. 201 though, lewis played it cheap THROUGHOUT, even in the us grand prix, he pushed nico off the track o go on and win the championship. HE DEFINITELY DIDN'T GET AWAY WITH IT. Nico went on to win ALL THE FINAL THREE RACES, and continued this trend well into the next year, equalling michael schumacher with the most consecutive wins a driver has got, and it couldve been more, if the inner bastard in lewis didnt kick in, and crash into him in spain that year. nico had the lead. and yes it's the same race max won his first race on debut. Rosberg's time wouldnt get easier. Lewis finally gave us the ultimate example of the inner bastard that he is, tryng to make nico rosberg get overtaken by slowing down the whole circuit, check it, it's everywhere. All nico had to do was crash into lewis, but he wanted to win fair and square.and he did. Lewis's inner bastard has kicked in every single time with valteri too. Asking the team to tell valteri to slow down so that he could overtake seb in azerbaijan, and yes, lewis has been good sport too, like 2018's hungarian grand prix, but all of this together, is the reason why i only see the same inner bastard in him as ppl did in schumi. And that's probably what makes him a seven time world champion as it did for schumi. But lewis definitely isn't a man i look up to.

Fernando Alonso always knew he was a championship winning level driver but he was given bad cars again and again. If you do the same to Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen or Sebastian Vettel, you'd hear worse in the first two cases for sure and probably enough in seb's case. And as far as spygate, crashgate and team orders are concerned, I wouldn't pin the entire blame on him for the first one. Simplified, crashgate is a reputed team management's attempt to win a GP to hold on to its sponsors, by cheating. By making one driver (piquet jr.) a pawn to be sacrificed and making the other (alonso) make the decisive move to win. And team orders in Germany 2010 is an attempt by another team to further the case for making their leading driver win the championship by hook or crook, because clearly, their machine purely on its merits, couldn't do it, if circumstances stayed the same.

Actually, Alonso Lewis controversy started before Lewis started driving Mclaren, remember Alonso was against Ron’s decision to bring Lewis.

What a GREAT video. Finally something talking things clear. Since I watch Formula 1 since not THAT long ago, I've read some "old" things and pretty much about Fernando. I'm a McLaren fan thx to him. Started watching F1 in 2015-16-17 and that was not the best thing as a new fan haha. Always watching that man suffering in a horrible car. I was sad to see him leave. So now I'm a McLaren fan but I always want him to do well. I hope he can finish this second part of his career better than the first one. Some podiums...imagine a win...it looks pretty hard right now, I don't know with the new regulations...I won't make predictions but I hope this comment can age well.

What I don’t get about crashgate is that Renault weren’t even close to fighting for the championship, so why take such a great risk to get only one win?

Sounds like a toxic thing to say, but when people say you're mediocre as a person, truthfully, you feel bad 🖕

Great video. This sums it all up as I've always been an Alonso apologist. He's definitely one of the best drivers of this era, just a shame the teams he's jumped to haven't supported that. Reminds me of Emerson Fittipaldi a bit. He also had two early titles and then threw it away to support his brother's team.

Because he has toxic mentality from winning so young and it is proven that the CARS and TEAMS are the reason he was on the podium and not his talent.

I don't care whether people think Alonso is toxic or not. All I know for a fact is that he is the only driver ever to take a title fight to the last race of the season TWICE with a car that is only fast enough for P6 on average all throughout both seasons. And I am willing to bet anything that no other driver will give an outstanding performance like that for the next couple of decades at the very least, maybe never.

Alonso needs a redemption although hes got nothing to prove and even if Ocon defeat him during this years in Alpine he still will be one of the greatest of all time. If Alpine manages to get their act together for 2022 and produce a competitive car I'm sure Alonso will be back at the top of his game competing with the likes of Hamilton, Verstappen....

Good video. Maybe you could have spoken about the "alone so" sign above the Renault Garage in 2006 (at Suzuka if I'm not mistaken).

You just mirrored my thoughts into this video. I am also a big Nando, Lewis & Seb fan. These guys made me fall in F1 and I will continue to support these guys no matter what. I just hope Fernando does not have to go through the midfield years again. The Alpine should be able to perform well for a podium!
