Yale Law School Fellow Stephen Roach, discusses his just-released book, Accidental Conflict. Roach explores how much of the adversarial nationalist rhetoric in both China and the USA is dangerously misguided and more a reflection of each nation’s fears and vulnerabilities than a credible assessment of the risks they face.

Does it give the right to the colonial powers to force Opium onto Chinese at gunpoint? @Harald in China. Well said in your original comment. We are rapidly moving into a multipolar world, and in order to prevent this, they are trying to force bipolararity with China as the alternative. 2 points I found objectionable: #2 - China's false narrative. The century of humiliation. His assertion is that rather than admitting China’s blunder of not partaking in the 1st industrial revolution, the current China leadership is using the humiliation China suffered to blame the imperial west. That is the most absurd notion I've ever heard. Clearly, this man has no clue about the temperament and makeup of Asian people and Chinese in particular. China has already moved on from the century of humiliation. Nobody in China is holding any grudges against the imperial west. They have blamed nobody but themselves for being weak and helpless. The country collectively has pulled itself out of utter miseries and destruction...not easy, but she's done it. The leadership is simply reminding the people the predicament the country was once in -- being ravaged and pillaged by foreign aggressors, and therefore must persist and stay on course to a brighter future. What's wrong with that? #2 - Xi Jing Ping made a huge blunder to side with Russia on the Ukraine war. The man suggested that Xi should toe the line of the west so as to be welcome as an hero to join the exclusive club. Xi might even be nominated for the Nobel Peace prize, so the man said. Obviously, our expert here is blaming the Ukraine crises all on Putin and denying any culpability of the west for aggressively expanding NATO right to Putin's doorstep. Has he not heard of the Monroe Doctrine so eagerly defended by the US? Has it not occured to him that the same notion might also apply to Russia? Moreover, years before the Ukraine crisis, it was clear that the US has placed China on its gunsight: "pivot to Asia" which is the codeword for bringing down China a peg or two, relentless demonizing of the Chinese leadership and Xi in particular, irresponsble fear-mongering of the China threat, trade war, tech wars against China's most successful tech firms, chip war, groundless accusation of genocide, condescending lecturing of democracy or the lack of, hollowing out the one-China policy, etc. etc. After all that, this man expects Xi to toe the line. Be real!

@JYY. You and I know, and in fact everybody knows, that the whole security concern about Huawai is bogus - trumped up by the US. The fact of the matter is: the US is doing everything possible to cut off China’s technological advancements and kill China’s most successful tech companies. They did the same in space technology. The US blatantly excluded China from participating in the “International” Space Station. That only made China more determined to achieve its objectives and they have in that case. Their space technology has blossomed marvellously. It’s also well known that the US will do everything possible to demonize its perceived enemy. It’s Washington’s dirty little trick. Xinjiang is entirely fabricated by a German by the name of Adrian Zenz. He was a nobody academia until he cooked up some statistical analysis about Xinjiang and falsely asserted that the Chinese government was locking up millions of Uyghurs and conducting genocide. His studies were funded by the US Department of Defense. Of course, the China hawks in the US and the west happily ran with Zenz’ fabrication, repeated it, reported it and quoted it countless times. Falsehood has now become truth. That’s the west’s deadly propaganda machine for you. China has completely lost the info war on this one.

And blaming China for not modernizing and missing the boat in industrialization is mind-boggling. As if to say that the plunder and the subjugation of the colonizers associated with industrialization are justified. No formerly subjugated people could forget the past - it informs their decision-making processes. China is determined not to be in the weak "position" again. Stephen Roach said that both the US and China blamed each other in a misguided way. He said China was misguided to blame the US' containment policy for its failure to restructure its economy. The US expects China to restructure its economy to be more like the US -- especially to make its economy more financialized. That is the US' idea of progress So, when China didn't move in that direction, people in the US financial industry believed that China had failed to restructure its economy. I don't think China wants the US level of financialization at all. Who wants the 2008 financial market collapse? Also, even if China blamed the US one way or another, did China initiate hostile actions against the US? No, China only reacted to specific US hostile actions, such as the destructive trade war and sanctions.

1) The Century Humiliation was about self-correction and reform instead blaming the "barbarians." It was actually a story of taking responsibility. We were arrogant and failed to adapt, and that the reason why every "barbarian" roamed freely in China. Barbarians do what barbarians always do, there's no point blaming the barbarians. This is not about Xi Jinping or the communist party. The narrative never changed since the late Qing Dynasty, Republic of China, and the People Republic of China. Even recently, it was tempting to cut ties with certain countries when facing the hate propaganda and containment from the UK and USA. But the same phrase from the Century of Humiliation still reminded us to "Adapt with time, reform and opening up". 2) The US is not trying to containing China? I like the joke. 3) If you put China into the non-aligned countries block, it makes perfect sense. Practically every of those countries refused to sanction Russia. You guys too focused on West vs Russia, and failed to see the 3rd power. 4) On the positive side, the Chinese mostly have a favorable view on the USA though unhappy with what the US is doing. The world doesn’t need a leader, and the world certainly doesn’t need one that looks down on the rest of the world. We need to actually be able to lookout for each other, and that can only happen with leaders that are able to look at other countries with the “nationalist thinking” it does to its own. What "inability or unwillingness to save"? This is such malarkey! Whoever sells anything to "us" and gets paid in USD must be willing to "save (in) USD" or find another who does to convert the USD they receive into anything else. We get goods and services, they get fiat USD. That's the long and the short of it. We have a gargantuan domestic market which can, in addition, support the profits and wages of billions of non-Americans. Finally, because we have a structural current account deficit (the Rest of the World sector has a structural financial surplus vis-a-vis the U.S.), we must run an at least as large government sector deficit to ensure the domestic private sector is not in deficit.

Chinese dream is not becoming number one power in the world. But Chinese dream will lead it to become number one power in the world. There is a subtle distincton between the two. Let me explain. China being a communist country, it leaders recognise, through thousands of years of Chinese history and culture, that any leader of China must satisfy the needs of its people otherwise they will be ultimately be thrown out by its people. So, we could see from each and every congress meeting, the congress made plans to imporove the living standard of Chinese. As there are 1.4billion Chinese, even if the earning per capita is only half of that of United States it will become the number one economic power in the world. Should China wishes to continue growing, it must remain friends to all nations the world. This was clearly ear-marked by Deng's visit to Japan. Over the last 10 years, electricity cost dropped, education cost dropped, medical expenses dropped. The Chinese government is now working on housing costs and it becoming cheaper. How many nations on earth could do that? No country could deny that China is one of the most important localmotive to drive the world economy. Next would be India and all ASEAN countries. Inevitably, US shares of world ecomony will drop as all these developing countries are rising. Unfortunately, the colonial sentiment of the Americans prohibits its politicain to face and accept this reality.

Force is force (misguided or otherwise). Force should be resolutely dealt with for as long as it takes, be met with greater force not with understanding or negotiation.

To many words, sin is not absent! Very subtle conversation implying US is so 'saintly' all past 250 years except 16 years of no war against vulnerable nations One's view does not confirm who's right, who's blaming another; it takes 2 hands to clap! Men did n do, GOD Saw n Sees, Rewarding each person/nation according to their words n works whether good or evil, including those those done in secret! 🧐

This is a tremendous video - Thank you. Perhaps it is a shortcoming that it looks at China U.S. relations solely in terms of Economics. An additional great concern is China's expansionism of both hegemony and territory.

Both China and the US were born out of a revolution. In the case of the US where we inherited the priviledged position of English common law, the revolutionary fervor was due to over taxation by the English crown. The US colonials accepted their role as slave holders and white supremacy over people of color whether these colored people were black or indigenous red.The US revolutionary war did not impact on the liberation of people oppressed by white Europeans who already continued a tendency of stealing other péople´s lands through invasion and expropriation. The predatory practices of the West had already caused the massacre of millions in the Americas. This predatory practice continues to plague our world today. China had its own problems prior to the Chinese revolution that ended partly with the formation of a modern China that was still menaced by Western occupation of some of its territory and the US controlled Taiwan. China therefor, was not able to realize its dream of a united China and the expulsion of foreigners from Chinese soil. The enemy identified with capitalism and for a long time after 1949 China dreaded the possible invasion by the US. That was its greatest worry. The same sentiment must have been felt by many English-Americans shortly after the US was founded under THE ARTICLES OF FEDERATION. THE US FEAR CAME TRUE IN THE BATTLE OF 1812. In the case of China The US will cause another war over any attempt by China to unify Taiwan. In both cases the underdog iOS quite well prepared and the conclusions will be similar in scope. THERE IS NO MISUNDERSTANDING. IN THIS PRESENT PHASE OF CHINESE GOVERNANCE CHINA has identified the need to continue to enact reforms so that the Chinese consumer has a viable safety net so that consumer spending will continue to grow. Zero Covid19 policies will be relaxed while expanding medical facilities to protect the Chinese people. In this 5 year plan the emphasis is the education, hewalth and welfare of the Chinese people with special attention to recovering from the real estate crisis and slowly expanding trade. The US also under Biden is recognizing that we are behind China and other countries in infrastructure development6, 5g development and smart cities to name a few. Tjhere are over 600,000 people that6 are homeless and the middle-class is disintegrating. Stephen Roach is correct in his conclusions. Both China and the US must establish a permanent committee whose role must be to tackle all of the friction that has been caused by both parties and present rational solutions that eliminates ignorance, hatred and unnecessary posrturing. Both dreams of both nations are achievable when we start our dialogue with radical empathy. WE ARE HUMANBEINGS COLLECTIVELY SHARING A VERY FRAGILE PLANET. WISDOM DICTATES WIN-WIN SOLUTIONS FOR A SHARED FUTURE!!

This guest either intellectually dishonest or blind in geopolitics at best. China was western cross hear long before Ukraine crisis. The west long feared Sino-Russ partnership that might onday become great danger for their hegemony in the world. So they started first with Russia which according to the west smaller fish to fry. China could feel that so Xi, instead of longing for a Noble prize (meant for western puppet) he decided to defend his nation. Xi knew it perfectly well that even if he donate his skin to the west, western hatred against the Chinese is so much, that the west will continue humiliate his nation like before!!

@9:43 Mr Roach seems to regard the Pew research polls as being the most accurate polls. I'm afraid this inevitably reduces the credibility of the rest of the analysis. If this is what Mr Roach bases his understanding of the world on, I think the analysis may not accurately reflect the reality. I have yet to find one single Pew research poll relating to China that does reflect the true situation. Fortunately, I'm not alone in this view, and someone has even made a video to shed more light on this point : kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mqqlaZeb3LbUg30.html This is by no means a once off thing. This definitely seems to be THE norm for Pew research. As for the rest of this interview, I haven't yet finished watching the interview. But I do agree with much of what Mr Roach has to say thus far (up to about 20 minutes). I just thought I would point out this bit first before continuing with the interview.

Is this a Socialist channel? cause then it would be better to rename it to new "Ideological" Thinking. Plenty of examples from modern day China and Soviet Union for your personal, echo chambers thinking. If not let me know if there is any ground breaking thought mentioned in the "About" section than asking for free handouts, case and point the current UK free handouts and the NHS crisis. Good luck.
