Voices of the Civil Rights Movement

Having spent more than one month in jail for sitting in at the Woolworths lunch counter, Hollis Watkins is no stranger to participating in consequential moments in the civil rights movement. Watkins, organizer and member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, registered black voters as part of the 1964 Mississippi Summer Project. Throughout “Freedom Summer,” Watkins reflected on the significance - and the dangers - of his work, following the murders of three fellow civil rights workers, and the attempted murder of Hartman Turnbow, one of the first African-Americans to register to vote in Mississippi.
