The Mistake of Wide Angle

Wide angle lenses are constantly recommended to Landscape Photographers as being the MUST HAVE GO TO lens for landscape photography. But I've had a frustrated relationship with my wide angle lens and rarely use it for landscape photography. On reflection though, it was all my own fault. It's time to rectify some mistakes.

Great tips Dave. That pool is a tricky one - I remember spending a bit of time there, thinking it should be an easy composition, but struggling to get what I wanted. These days, I usually only use wide-angles when I want to get a foreground element in the scene that's too large to get in otherwise. Really liked that Fox Glove image.

Great vlog Dave, thank you. I’ve found I don’t use my 16-35 anywhere near as much as I thought I would, this has given me a few ideas to try for sure. Love the photos, especially of the trees and barn, very much in awe of your location. Ignore the R5C comment too btw, us R6 users have to stick together 😁

Thanks Martin, I was exactly the same. I bought it about three years ago, specifically for landscape photography and after the first few months barely used it at all. Using it in this way is motivating me to attach it a whole lot more, it will definitely feature in a few more vids coming up. And yeah haha that R5c comment is laughable ;)

A good subject Dave, earlier this year, I picked up a wide angle lens for my Nikon. I've not had a chance to use it in anger yet, but this is great advice and some tips (to try and remember when in image overload/headless chicken mode when out shooting).

That's the trick right there isn't it - trying to recall anything whilst actually out shooting haha. Thank mate.

First time I have commented on your Vlogs. Very well explained. A really interesting subject. I think its all about what the eye can compute and make into a pleasing composition If you shoot really wide there is far too much for the eye to comprehend and 'assemble' into something pleasing. When you narrow down the view as in the last image with the tree looking much closer to the ruin then the eye can assemble a much more pleasing image.. Thanks for posting.

Thanks Chris, you're spot on there. As the years roll by, I'm inclined to include far less in a shot than was once the case. Less colours, less shapes. As you say there, it's an intersting subject, one which I intend to muse over much more in the coming months. Glad you popped a comment on Chris, cheers

Boom! This video is off to a flying start mate! Are you guys getting haze and smoke from the fires in Canada or Greece? The sun in your video looks very similar to when we get the Canadian wildfire smoke. Makes for some amazing sunrises and sunsets. Great information here as always and the images used to highlight your points were fantastic. Loved seeing the location at 5:32 in summer and the image at 8:10 was mint. Enjoyed it as always. Hope you are well mate, chat soon!

Cheers mate, you get honourary Mancunian status for using the word 'mint' in a sentence like that haha. We did have some of that wildfire smoke hit the UK at the back end of June, beginning of July, but by this point I think it had dissipated. Was a beauty of a sunset though, just the right amount of cloud
