With the context of Mitski, I'm hoping they meant it in a "mommy issues" way, because Mitski has a whole song based around that type of stuff, if somebody is s3xualizing Mitski then that's really weird

I’m old enough to remember the 1970s, and people being pieces of shit at concerts is nothing new, so it’s not your generation - any more than it’s millennials, or gen x, or baby boomers, or the silent generation, or the g.i. generation, or the lost generation, going back to the beginning of time. But what DOES seem new is that there’s a sizable contingent of people who are demanding a RIGHT to be a piece of shit at concerts, i.e. “I paid for this, so I’m entitled to yell, sing along off-key at a Broadway show, throw a hammer at a singer, noisily eat a four-course meal in the movie theater, answer my phone while sitting in the balcony at an opera, set fires,” etc., etc., and it’s bizarre; before, when people behaved like shits at shows, the other people surrounding them would complain, and then the shit would either settle down or be escorted out by security … but now there seems to be this increasing attitude - I’ll call it “The Market Attitude” - in which people think social norms are secondary to their having “bought” something, that they don’t have to behave because their having spent money means they can do WHATEVER THEY WANT, and because there’s this shitty conservative movement spending billions of propaganda dollars to encourage exactly that attitude, a number of people who should act as enforcers - other audience members, security, the piece of shit’s cohorts - question whether or not they even have the right to intervene, and instead hang back, or even emulate the shitty behavior to “fit in” and not be the “party-pooper.” Anyway, sorry for the long post, and that’s really awful about the hammer. I would’ve demanded security arrest the assailant, and then I would’ve walked off the stage, but I suppose if you’re still getting started then these may not be options. And I’ve not performed in ages - I was never anyone, as it were, but in a sense I’m glad not to be up there today. But please keep at it! There’s nothing like nailing a performance and feeling the waves of love from the audience. :-)

The thing is that Björk is at the point in her career where she doesn't need to tour to make money. Mitski probably isn't there, so the option of "only performing in specific situations" is basically impossible, and she needs to tour to live basically.
@W4TSKY
@W4TSKY 2 ай бұрын
@@vixo551 That’s true. Bjork came out at a time when people still actually bought music. Even though she’s always been a niche artist, I’m sure she has tons in the bank and plenty of people will pay her obscene amounts of money to perform or be apart of their projects as well. I don’t think Mitski has that privilege yet.

As a dancer I have seen so many weird dance performances that look so funny yet nobody laughs. I saw a contemporary dance performance of a woman breaking out of a trash bag on an empty stage, collapsing to the ground then laying still for 10 minutes as the performance happened around her on the ground. Funniest thing I've seen in my life. Still the room was silent other than applause. Even if you pay to see a performance there are still people in the room with you that don't want to hear your ignorant quips and catcalls period. If you want to make fun of a performance do it at home and not in front of the artist. You are not the main character.

Also, the people that make fun of her performances need to get a life!!!! I've been attending concerts for years and years now and it truly is baffling how stupid crowds have gotten. I try to avoid all ages concerts. 18+ has a decent chance of obnoxious people too. I very rarely have issues at 21+ concerts, only the occasional drunk idiots. Not to sound like a curmudgeon, but it is younger people who have no manners and who seem not to care. I could talk about this for ages. i used to love mitski so so much. i saw her in 2016, 2017 and 2018 in smaller venues and it was so intimate and beautiful even at the first two shows when she didn't have dance routines yet. but when I saw her again in 2022 the crowd had changed so much, there were so many people trying to be the funniest person in the crowd, holding up signs on their phones or yelling things out. catcalling mitski, calling her mommy, screaming so loud when her dance had a move that could be read as sexual. and everyone filming every second. it broke my heart, I felt like noone was actually listening to her in any way. her words, her music, what her movement was saying, was lost on them. I could barely hear her singing over the crowd too. I don't want to blame a younger crowd either, but it was a younger crowd who had heard of her from tiktok. and I also think it could have been their first concert after covid so they didn't know how to act. i don't think they were even old enough to really be reading into her lyrics or her stage movement. in some songs i was seeing her portray a story of a woman objectified and the crowd was screaming at her and catcalling her. it was shocking :(

@@dizzykitteh It feels eerily similar to objectification. And I am nowhere near knowledgeable enough to actually say if this is right or not but. We as a society are having a reckoning with the meaning of consent, and there is a part of us that thinks that economics beats out consent. Like- Throwing things at someone IS assault. Even if it is something like a bra, I think there needs to be a discussion about what consent is and what it means. And it is tied into this belief of the performer as something not quite human to us- or maybe a human, but certainly not a person. To be annoying about it, it kind of reminds me of solipsism- the idea that the only thing that we can be sure exists in this world is us. I have read a few comments that talk about the monetary side of it and the reasons, and those are certainly important. But I think it might be worthwhile to think about what our generation is picking up as the meaning of CONSENT, which truthfully goes so far beyond just "can I have sex with you" and MUST go beyond "can I have sex with you" if we want to live in a world where boundaries are respected. Not just that, but if buying a ticket is worth MORE than a person's bodily autonomy, then I think we really need to think about that. (Also, I think it is VERY interesting that the annoying Mitski fans who are struggling with consent are likely young women who think about consent a lot. Also, they are literally sexually harassing her when they call her "mommy" or when they tell her to "have their children" (like i read somewhere else in these comments). I don't know what it means- if it is just a sign of a wider struggle with empathy and consent? Or something else. I would love to hear your thoughts!)

She has issues with her mother, she experienced loneliness and bullying, she has that inner gut wrenching feeling where you so desperately want to be loved and even though you are, you still feel you're not. I just absolutely love her music and relate to it, I dont understand how people can be so rude and disrespectful. Has no one actually sat down and read the lyrics away from the song? They're wonderfully deep and so meaningful. Towards the end of the video you mentioned how it could be that people are so used to their videos on tiktok being about them that it isn't enough to be an audience member anymore. Well, there's a saying that sums this up really well and is something that quite alot of celebrities sadly live by. "Any attention, is good attention". Meaning, doing anything for attention, even something people don't like or gets negative attention, is good because you still got peoples attention. If you ask me, it's pathetic and speaks volumes about how lonely they feel

I went to Mitski's acoustic show for The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We in LA a few months ago. Right after it came out, she played through the whole album as an acoustic set, just her and two others on stage, no set design, no dancing, just giving us the album. Between each song there was always a bit of dead air, just total silence while she prepped for the next song. Between first few songs, some people would whoop. There were weird little interruptions here and there, and I had seen her with Harry Styles so I was already preparing for an annoying crowd and a ruined show. Once, one girl shouted during the break, "I LOVE YOU, MITSKI!" And then, from across the theater, a deeper voice emerged from the darkness. "SHUT UP." It never happened again. Every time Mitski would end a song, we would clap politely for a few moments and then sit in complete silence as she changed over her guitar or set up for the next song. A whole theater just waiting quietly for the next song. Every time this happened, I felt tense. Surely it won't last. Someone is going to ruin this moment. But no one did. People were still, quiet, and respectful. Once Mitski had played through the whole album, she told the crowd that now she was going to play some old favorites, and invited us to sing along. So people did! It was so joyous! I think this concert experience will stay with me for the rest of my life. We, as a collective, decided that we would NOT be disturbing the others in the audience or ruining the atmosphere of an acoustic performance. We would NOT be yelling things out between songs. When we're invited to, THEN we'll let loose. It was the most civilized show I've ever been to. So I think things are getting better.

i saw mitski back in summer 2016 which i'm realizing typing this out now is close to eight years ago now and it was one of the most emotional shows i had/have ever seen (and at the time i had seen literally far too many shows to count -- used to go to like a show a week and be very involved in the music scenes of the cities i'd lived in so it wasn't as though it was because of a lack of quantity/exposure to live music). this was in montreal, a city that was once the centre of the musical universe for me. it was a smaller venue that i'd been to a couple times already (i remember seeing my favourite band there and the singer-songwriter washing his hands beside me bc there wasn't a separate washroom for the musicians, just one tiny washroom for literally everyone), there were 30 people max and the average age i remember actually kind of being on the older side -- i was 23 and remember being among the youngest there. it's really weird to see what her fanbase has evolved into, or maybe for whatever reason (tiktok? lol?) her shows end up full of a lot of people who aren't actually fans and don't know or really care for/about her music that much?

Stan Culture is a double-edged sword: The positives of stan culture is the fact that you'd have an active and dedicated fanbase that are very supportive of your endeavors (the majority of the time) which allows you to gain traction but at the same time culture can produce some of the most unhinged people you've ever interacted with from being toxic to outsiders or genuine criticism as well as the fact that they can show affection in the most intrusive way possible as displayed in the TikTok video.

i went to her first show of the most recent tour in miami beach. luckily, only one or two people yelled i love you and a lot of people just told them to stop. the not recording thing wasn’t a problem. i was towards the back so i was able to see the phones and there weren’t that many especially in the pit! i did record a few songs in full like pink in the night and and i bet on losing dogs and little clips and pictures of other songs. i’m towards the younger side of the fan base, but i didn’t see very many

Pleeaaase try to avoid filming entire songs and pulling out your phone constantly during a concert. You might think that it doesn't bother anyone, but it's very distracting for the people standing next to you. Also, if you know that mitski prefers people to not film entire songs, what would compel you to do it anyway?
@Laxili_
@Laxili_ 3 ай бұрын
@@karolineCPH i chose to record two songs (like 5 minutes out of 1 hr and 16 minutes) because they are my favorite songs and i wanted to be able to listen to them after. i understand how it could be distracting, though the person to my left did the same, and the person to my right was my mom who couldn’t care less about being distracted or not by phones. i know i reallt shouldn’t have recorded the full songs, but in the moment i just wanted to have a recording that i can listen back to.

So lucky I've had the chance to see Mitski twice, touring for Puberty 2 and then for Be The Cowboy. Both shows were in a smaller venue, and the crowd was very respectful. Everyone was just there to sing along and have a good time!

You said everything perfectly. People love to blame this behaviour on the new generation finding her on TikTok, but that’s not all it is. Most people don’t even consider the kind of concert they’re going to, they just hear about a big artist going on tour and think it’ll be something big and fun to go to. Mitski’s concerts are very VERY different from most others that people treat like a big party. That’s perfectly fine, but everyone else just can’t accept that.

I feel like I saw her at just the right time for the Laurel Hell tour in Seattle. Lots of hype and excitement from a fan-packed house but still respect for her performances. I think some people screamed "I love you" a few times and it was the most excited/vocal crowd I've been in but it felt more like a community all excited to see/cheer for her. And people actually shut up during the songs.

Yes! It was a group of friends up above my seat and they yelled daisuki and mother is mothering. Then later another group were yelling weird crap too before being shushed. Most of the audience was cool but I could still hear the chronically online and there was one girl standing up during a song as if she didn't have ppl sitting behind her. 😐 Some of these ppl really think they're special.

THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS. I have been a mitski fan for over three years, and I have been through the terror of thinking she would never come back. I got to go to the laurel hell tour and the audience was already... interesting. Im really glad shes doing this tour, but i'll be very sad if she never tours again. But I couldn't blame her. Anyways, Laurel Hell best album, Stay Soft best song.

Dev, I am so fucking sorry someone threw a hammer at you. I am mortified that someone could do that, and I'm even more disgusted that people laughed. Your music is beautiful and artistic (just like you!,) and I hope this doesn't deter you from sharing your talent while going on tour. Wishing you the best ❤

I somehow avoid the worst concert crowds like I can't believe people act like at concerts. Especially Mitski, like what a chill artist who is genuinely making art to make art. Why are her fans this way? Seeing a disconnect between an artist's art and the fans is something I've noticed more lately. I'm a kpop Stan so I think of the LOONA tour where the fans were so weirdly rude to the idols and had these weird expectations that, as someone who also likes LOONA, was confusing because that energy has never been what the group put out to me. This feels like the same disconnect that makes me wonder why people even go to concerts or listen to artists when they really do not actually care or respect them. But I know this had to be a small amount of people doing this, so I feel bad for the others trying to respectfully watch an artist the like.

My favorite music artist is Alex G, and this has happened to him too I feel. He also went pretty viral on tiktok, and while im glad its brought new fans (and money) his way; I can't imagine how frustrating it is to deal with immature and disrespectful fans. Not just at concerts but in general. It's also sad because now people who didn't already like Alex G before the viral stuff,, don't give his music as much of a chance because it's "annoying tiktok music" I have had actual people tell me thats why they won't ever listen to him. :[ Btw I do agree that older fans and those not on tiktok cause issues too,, but yeah young immature fans and tiktokers seem to be the current big problem

it's insane how people can disrespect artists this much, especially when they are willingly *paying* and going to their shows. Don't go if you don't have the decency to show the artist you "love" any respect.

I saw Mitski at her first concert this tour (1/26 in Miami) and the crowd was respectful and calm. There was one woman a couple rows behind me who yelled "I love you Tamino!" during his opening act and he said that he loved her more. My friends who saw her 1/27 had basically the same experience, we all had a fantastic time; I wish everyone else could have had the same experience.
