Welcome to the official KZfaq channel of The Monkees, home of 60s chart-topping hits “Last Train To Clarksville,” “I’m A Believer” and “Daydream Believer,” as well as multi-platinum, #1 albums ‘The Monkees,’ ‘More of the Monkees,’ ‘Headquarters’ and ‘Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones, Ltd.’
Monkee-mania began in Los Angeles in 1965 when Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith, the late Peter Tork and the late Davy Jones were cast in the eponymous television series about a struggling rock band inspired by The Beatles’ A Hard Day’s Night. The quartet brought a singular mix of pop, rock, psychedelia, Broadway and country to their resulting music. By the time the series aired its final episode on March 25, 1968, The Monkees had sold 16 million albums and 7.5 million singles. Few could have predicted the impact The Monkees would have on music and pop culture at large, one that still reverberates more than 50 years later.

*WHAT!?!?* *'Wool Cap Mike' is gone?* *I didn't know* ( *Like Lennon said in '70 "Don't worry over us, we're alright and so are you and everything you liked of the 'Beatles' is still here, all the records and the films and all that will still be around...we gave you fans the best we had for years and years and now it's time for a long rest and none of you would like to hear and see us at forty or something..."* ) __________ *How wrong he was and didn't know it!* __________ * 'The Monkees' will live-on long after all the original fans are gone, and that wouldn't be true unless there was real talent and chemistry involved between them, because although a camera may not 'tell the truth of things'...it doesn't 'lie' either* *WE know the difference between 'fake' and 'real' and what we saw and heard from the 'American Fab Four' was real even if it was never intended to be* __________ *I saw an interview with Nesmith here on 'Tube and he talked about Peter Tork and how Mike seemed to just 'always not quite right' and "Not the friend I should've been" with Peter in being 'not enemies but not close the way we should have been' and that when an assistant told him where he working said "I just heard that Peter has died" it felt "Like I was kicked in the guts and my heart stopped because I never got the the chance to tell him I loved him and didn't know it and now it's too late to even say goodbye to him* ( *Mike looked like he going to burst into tears right on camera and trying hard not to* ) __________ *I have a friend 'Leon' that I knew from Kindergarten all the way to 7th. grade and we were always 'pals' but what I didn't realize was how poor he was...I had no real concept of what it meant to not have any money in a pocket for a snack or matinee movies or a bag of candy* *My family was not 'rich' at all but there was always money for me to have for lunch at school and for 'after' and I always got 'movie money' at least twice a month and Leon had none of that and the 'little house' he and his mom lived-in would be considered 'cheap' and 'poor' even in the late '50's thru the '60's in Dearborn, Mi.* *How I wish I could see him now after more than fifty-years have passed, and tell him "I'm sorry for not being a better friend than I was but I just didn't know any better and now that I know it makes my heart hurt that I wasn't as good to you as you were to me and I'M SORRY* ( *We moved from Dearborn to Las Vegas in early '68 and I never even thought to say 'Goodbye' to him and get his address so I could write to him or maybe call sometimes* ) *WHAT AN A-HOLE I WAS TO HIM and I still don't understand 'Why?'*

@@michaellorenzen8200 You make a great point. I bet there is a bit more , and more ugly reasons also. The teens and 21-25`s now are into nothing but digitized rep/hip hop and have no attention span because of the tach. you speak of. They react to these old tunes(check out reaction vids) and take rock lyrics literally , not understanding analogies or poetic license. If they hear "my baby blue", they think it means "oh, he`s talking about his new child with blue eyes", not a reference to a girlfriend he is singing about. Not the best example, but ya get my meaning.

That's because writing music has become a lost art. Computer programs do the writing now based on an algorithm of what people supposedly want. This is why there has not been a popular song with a key change since 2002. They no longer know how to write a proper melody and don't understand how to use key changes and time changes to enhance and color the mood(s) of a song. That is what's missing from modern music. It reminds me of the Bowie / Ronson collaboration. Bowie wrote the songs on guitar and brought a very crude and basic structure to Ronson who then molded that song into the tunes we know and love. Ronson created the arrangements, key changes and time shifts. That was all 100% Ronson.

Two years ago my wife went into hospital for a major operation. I dropped her off there, made sure she was checked into her ward and left as she was taken down into theatre. I got in my car, turned on the radio and as I drove away from the hospital this song came on. I broke down in tears and had to pull the car over. You see, her late Mum was called Jean and as youngsters they used to sing this to her "Cheer up sleepy Jean". To me this meant her Mum was watching over her and the worry drained away from me and I just knew for certain that she was going to be ok. Sure enough after a nine hour operation she pulled through and is now fine. I have always loved this song but even more so now. Daily I give my thanks to the wonderful surgical team, her Mum Jean and Davy Jones.

You once thought of me As a white knight on his steed Now you know how happy I can be Oh, and our good time starts and end Without dollar one to spend But how much, baby, do we really need? Cheer up, Sleepy Jean, oh, what can it mean To a daydream believer and a homecoming queen? Cheer up, Sleepy Jean, oh, what can it mean To a daydream believer and a homecoming queen? Cheer up, Sleepy Jean, oh, what can it mean To a daydream believer and a homecoming queen? Cheer up, Sleepy Jean, oh, what can it mean To a daydream believer and a homecoming queen? I know mine too! I was three years old whent his came on and my brother was 12 and I would sit in front of the tv and say "Mike! Mike!" I STILL love Mike Nesmith- he wrote to me and sent me signed gifts a few times ove the years he was an absolute love, for sure! I treasure my letter from him! One of my first images I think of from that age of three was their legs walking intertwined like that! :P! I met Peter Tork in 1980 on Micky's brithday at the Playboy club in NJ- OH MY GOD I was toast - 26 French kisses he gave me- we were together like three hours- OH, I was just mezmerized by him! My mother was too- she said he was so intelligent and charismatic- he WAS too! His voice in my ear gave me chills- I will never forget the way he said my name, ohhhhhhh talk about swoon! He is tall too! I was 16 :) what a way to learn how to French Kiss! i didn't even have a boyfriend- never kissed a boy, util Peter WWOWOWOWO! Theh funny thing was, I said to my mother the next day that I didn'tknow why he was pressing my thigh with his knee-- she siad, "OH MY GOD! THAT WASN"T HIS KNEE!!!!"Kimberly

And this was the song that many other artists rejected. Even David Jones didn't want to sing it. But it became one of their 3 number one world wide hits. Go figure.

@@sidecarmisanthrope5927 I don`t think you were talking to me, but your comment came to my not. bell. I never knew anything about the backstory, if you will, on D.B., but it sounds like most Monkees tunes being brushed off with discain by the guys because they wanted to do their own material..sorry for misspell on disdain. Looking back with the mind of an adult and musician, the boys were really given a ticket to stardom and had a fuckton of good songs to work with. I still love some old Monkees tunes but they were just that; boys. Naive boys without a clue about the industry.

Hey madam/sir, I'm Gen X (1973) and I vaguely remember seeing some of The Monkeys' shows on re-run channels, and I just loved them. I'm re-visiting some of their songs and remembering their own magic. They are/were really talented for their time, and I'm glad they are still people from your generation reveling in their music, still. Cheers :)

The Monkees were a highly effective and successful group. They worked together seamlessly to create music and entertainment that captured the hearts of many fans. Their collective talents and personalities complemented each other, resulting in a synergy that allowed them to achieve great heights of fame and popularity. Whether on stage or in the studio, the Monkees exhibited a level of teamwork and collaboration that set them apart from other musical groups of their time. Overall, the Monkees were a prime example of what can be accomplished when a group of individuals come together to achieve a common goal.

Granted, when they first started out they were the "Pre Fab Four" just doing a TV show. But they were all individually talented guys in their own right. One came from British theater, another cane from New York's infamous folk scene, another was a child Movie Star and the last was writer who went on to create MTV. When they recorded Headquaters, tthey proved to the people who in the beginning would't let record their own stuff that they were the Real Deal.

Firstly - what a beautiful and uplifting song. The melody, harmonies and subtle brass backing - all topped off by that gorgeous counter melody at the end. Then the sheer charm and charisma of the four young men. When they start competing for the camera spotlight is just about my favourite Monkees moment of all. Finally, it’s hard to grasp that it’s been nearly 60 years since they burst onto the scene. Sad that they have passed away, one by one in recent years. Thank you for this magic

I played this not long ago and the response from my mom was unexpected. She got a big smile on her face and said “Awww the Monkees! Reminds of when I was a little girl.” She’s pushing 70. So great to hear songs from your youth and it brings back good memories. It was from my mom’s childhood. It was from mine from the Monkee’s reruns. It’s famous again today. You can’t keep a great song down! Classic song. 🤙🏼

Paul McCartney has written in his autobiography, "Many Years From Now", that it has became THE SONG of Linda and him in private, since they've heard it in the first time Procol Harum played it. They were going out together for the first time and went to a club in London where the musicians were presenting themselves. Since I've read this, when I hear this song I think about Paul and Linda.
