It's been over two months since my last cabin renovation update, so time to fill my viewers in to the latest progress. I add a loft window and change out two others. There's one last section of rot to repair, and finally add a little siding. Starting to look good!
PS: The music was intentionally loud. I didn't want anyone to mistake this for a Bob Vila episode! No Pros here, just me!

Slim, in regard to the running cost so far, you had said "it's getting up there". The cost of peace and freedom to enjoy your life is priceless. You have given so much to the viewer with your videos since the beginning, you are more than deserving of a place to basically kickback and enjoy the view of the changing seasons in comfort when not traveling. Excellent outside of the box thinking and construction skills.

I knew your cabin would look good when it was fixed up. But it's looking WAY better than I thought it would. It's looking amazing. Anyone that says it's taking too long is crazy. You've had to deal with serious foundation problems, a carpenter ant infestation, rot in a dozen places, and you've completely reconfigured the interior, you've turned the loft into usable space, the structure is hugely improved from when you bought it. It's going to be amazing.

Slim, I'm an adjuster and I've seen countless vinyl windows, like the one on the back elevation, leak at the top and damage the interior. To help prevent that, run a caulk of clear silicon sealant in the drip rail on the top of the window.

I am not surprised that it’s taking you so long, Slim, since you’re working alone, on a budget, and also traveling, filming and editing. I’m impressed with how much you’ve accomplished, actually. ✨ I love how the cabin is looking on the outside so far. The trim color is cheerful and the shingle siding is perfect. ✨ Are you going to put a window on the other side of the loft? Cross ventilation is wonderful in the summer and you can add fans to push hot air outside in the hottest months. I lived without AC until late in my teens. I learned all about air flow and using fans to keep cool.😅

With the base trim you are using I really think a piece piece of Z flashings would have been a good idea. Tyvek is not meant to keep water out every time it rains. It's meant to allow moisture out of the structure while keeping drafts from blowing in. I think you will end up with rot along the front wall in a couple years. Pull that trim board loose and you can work the Z flashing up under the shingles. Fun to watch the cabin come together. Keep up the good work.
@iivaridark6850

I was thinking the same, the low end of the shingle is against the trim board and might cause the shingle staying wet too long. An easy repair though I think.

I am a gardener, and the one thing I can tell you is WATER. In average heat (70 - 80 degrees) water every 3rd day, 80-90 degrees water every other day, 90 degrees and up EVERY DAY. Keep in mind, lots of water also may mean to up the food requirement - add compost or organic feed to your plants. I generally do to my food bearing plants every 2 weeks. My floral and fancy trees and such - 1x a month.

Looking good, Slim! As a no nuttin sidewalk superintendent I'd like to point out a possible issue with the siding job. I am concerned the base trim board will serve as a dam and cause water to collect and rot the lower sheathing and framing. Maybe the easiest repair would be to remove the trim install a Z flashing and re-install. As I said a no nuttin here but that is the way I see it. Good luck! I really enjoy you videos!

Hi John, the house wrap behind the trim will suffice in my opinion at least. This is a budget build after all. Perhaps a bead of silicone on top may improve if there turns out to be an issue. Thanks! SP

Little late in commenting on this video. Love the cabin build videos so much. One of the really neat things about you sir is that you don't think of yourself as infallible. You do your research and then set out on each particular goal trying your very best and knowing you are going to make mistakes. You recognize you are not a professional so you don't hold yourself to a professional's standards. If you make a mistake, as even pros do, you think about it and come up with the best fix you can think of. Bravo sir!
