You're welcome. I played this back in 2005-6 back when I was 13 lol. Online was wild. The community was filled with a bunch of us kids and it was drama city. We'd hold tournaments of who can solo a monster faster when we hated each other. We'd even have fights with different weapons and if you knocked a person down that was a point for you. We'd have clans. It was the wild west of monster hunter.

I had 2000hrs into one character. I used to do the Land and Sky mission (Los and Ian pair) no armor and always fought in the grassy field so they both could be there. I had a mountain of Plates and that was the only mission offline you could earn them. I had everything maxed out. Fatalis was a god Damn nightmare. Lao Shun Lung was 10x the raid boss Zoyboy is from MHW. I wish they'd give us MH1 remastered.

That and Handle With Care! to unlock it were the hardest things I had done to that point. I dont think a MH1 remastered could ever capture the feeling of the original. They would probably implement a bunch of QOL improvements that would ruin its feel. In 1 you did everything the hard way.

What this video doesn't show is the online portion of the MH experience which made everyone want to keep playing. Back then when you where online you had rooms that allowed a total of 8 hunters, which gave people time to talk and plan out what people wanted to get. It was like old school WoW where half the fun was the friends you made along the way. Because this was the first entrance into the now long running series, there are plenty of exploits people used. The best example of this is head locking (HL) with a lance. This exploit allowed a hunter who had a lance enter the zone first (as back then the first hunter who entered the zone first had the least amount of lag) and start attacking the monsters head. Once the monster stumbled the lancer would position themselves in front of the head and would start a two thrust combo that would continuously keep the monster in the stumble animation. That allowed the other 3 hunters to attack the monster freely.
@Robbinoks
@Robbinoks 2 жыл бұрын
@@H4m54 damn I totally forgot about headlocking. I definitely played to hangout with other hunters, I remember there was a little culture of saying hey everytime someone entered the guild hall, nowadays no one really interacts like that and I've alwayswished Capcom tried to cultivate that community again somehow. I was hardwalled by Rathalos for years. I got the first Monster Hunter at age 9. I tried everything but couldn't. Until I got the Ogre Tusk Bonelance. I still remember getting my first tail cut ever. I still remember Rathalos limping away through Area 9, the single worst area to hunt in, and one last stab into its leg when it finally went down. Seeing your own work succeed- with no hand outs or help, is exceedingly satisfying. Everything needing to be gathered, stored and combined- your own work and efforts paying off in the end. MH1 had this exact effect. Even if it /shows its age, it is still a pretty satisfying game.

I miss small monsters being a threat but not nearly as obnoxious as they are in MH1. Tri/3U did it right with the Jaggi, Baggi, Uroktor, etc. all being threats that you should take out and served as actual obstacles instead of, say, the Jagras from World who do no damage and never attack. However, the Leshen fight with those Jagras sucked. That was above even MH1 levels of aggravating.
@kurosan0079
@kurosan0079 2 жыл бұрын
@@TemplarBlonic Yeah, I think 3rd gen small monsters had just the right amount of aggression to feel like a threat without being too overwhelming. As for the Jagras in the Leshen fight, I actually liked that mechanic. I think it would be good if it's only available on specific conditions, like if it's a monster that hunts with a pack, or it's Gore Magala affecting them through the frenzy virus.
@kurosan0079
@kurosan0079 Жыл бұрын
Here's a thought of mine while playing through MH1. The issue with the critters in modern MH is not just their lack of aggression. They also die way too easily. The MH1 Ioprey, for example. They are already ridiculously aggressive, but also, their hp is high enough that they don't die after a few hits. Making each and every unit a legitimate threat. There's no killing them all in one fell swoop, and even if you do kill them, more will come. I think these 3 factors of aggression, bulk, and infinite reinforcements make them an even bigger threat than the main monster sometimes. Now, do they need to be this tanky in modern games? Maybe not. But I hope in MH6, they're not complete pushovers that you kill without even realizing it. At least make the player feel their presence first. They came close with the Girros. I just wish they were a bit tankier. Edit: Also, I think their hitbox is larger? I have trouble dodging through these guys whenever they get me into a corner. So, 4 factors, if I'm right about this one.
@TemplarBlonic
@TemplarBlonic Жыл бұрын
@@kurosan0079 I agree. As a Hammer user especially, I completely forget the existence of smaller monsters in modern MH. They are such non-issues that you forget they're there, unlike MH3 and the like where you had to manage their numbers every couple of minutes with the main pack leader to make sure you don't get swarmed. It was a nice balance. Hopefully we get fresher small monster tactics with MH6!

I'm only a minute and a half in, so I'm probably going to sound stupid if this is covered later in the video, but in MH1, the only insects that indicate an insect gathering point are fireflies. Also, if you're playing on an emulator, I HIGHLY recommend playing with a controller that has back bumpers, that way you can bind the left and right D-Pad buttons to the bumpers. If you have a PS4 controller, Sony actually sells a relatively affordable attachment that plugs into the Ext. port and adds reassignable back bumpers. I went from getting bodied by Yian Kut-Ku to soloing Rathalos in a matter of days with the bumpers.

This video got me to play the Japanese version of MH1. I've not been able to get online as of yet but it's been surprisingly fun! Considering I got no QoL, can't even sort my box, I've been really enjoying the gameplay loop of gathering and selling, and each attempt at a nonster feels like a true challenge considering a good amount of them can combo you to death if you aren't careful. Inching and scratching for every bit of progress makes every victory feel truly earned. And this is my 2nd true MH I've been wanting to play besides 3U. I may be a masochist though lol

Damn this brings back memories, thanks for the PTSD 😂. After seeing the trailer way back before release date I was intrigued. Picked it up off ebay in late 2005 and it was absolutely brutal. I bought the stupid expansion for the PS2 so I could go online and that is what absolutely changed the game for me. I had a clan and we played for hundreds of hours and we even had a forum page called Minegarde. I was a Lance and Bowgun main and had probably the the best time of my gaming life. I even logged in on the last day before the servers were closed for a few last hunts with friends, literally got disconnected in a raid when the servers went down. I love seeing how popular it has become so thanks to all those that stuck with it, from the first one, through the Freedom releases and beyond to what we enjoy now!

Knight Blonic ideally, it should work as a spectrum. Attacks that need to be read shouldn’t function as they do in early games, with literal 0 frames of windup, but rather with very quick animations that happen under specific conditions (I.e. Garuga doesn’t attack for X seconds, it takes a step back and charges)

Oh, buddy… As you saw in the video, I had a similar struggle. Apparently you have to have a specific distance away from their head for it to work. Unlike 4U up to Rise, flash bombs have a specific range that they work in. If you can measure your Hunter’s length and envision it as an extension of the Rathalos head vertically, then you should be able to land them more. However, when the Rathalos is idle while flying(such as rising or just about to land) the flash range seems to be incredibly generous. Let me know how it goes!

@@TemplarBlonic Congrats! That's another MH to place under the belt, also I'm surprised that song was available, the first time I ever heard it was in an official Dragonball Heroes commerical, didn't expect to ever hear it again out of that.

@@bobsmith8405Thanks! Maybe someday I can get the private server working and finally take down the Fatalis. Next on the list is FU, which I hear has even whackier hitboxes... After that I'll have the main series of games played, but those will receive videos as well during my next playthroughs! Really? Surprising given how Dragonball has so many tunes under their belt.

@@TemplarBlonic @Crusader Bloonicus sez DEUS VULT! You're in for a real treat there, but hopefully, the private servers will work for Fatalis. Also as for the commercial see for yourself, it makes me wonder which other songs are available from those trailers now. Check at 51:25 onwards kzfaq.info/get/bejne/frx2qMSnt6--mo0.html

@@bobsmith8405 FU is the game that instilled the fame of the series way back when-- I remember that specifically. Then Tri brought a massive amount of new fans in(such as myself) due to the availability on the Wii and World made it mainstream. Looking forward to trying it out and playing it through to the point of taking on Fatalis of that game! That'll certainly be quite the video, too... I hope that I can get the servers working or that there will be a loophole that will allow the US versions of the game to connect in due time. One can hope! Hah! Small world with music selection. Never knew that even existed!

It makes you appreciate where we are in gaming right now- sure, there is _a lot_ of garbage, but there are still some gems! But it also makes you appreciate the generation during and after MH1, and how games were at their pinnacle of both design and immersion without sacrificing engaging gameplay during those times.

@@TemplarBlonic Ye and as hard as MH1 is, for me it's still easier than Dino Crisis 1 who's controls aged badly. Me and my friends are having a PS1 and 2 marathon.

Every game until World forces you to use Sword and Shield at the beginning. The first hammer was 3000+ zenny and the beginning quests only gave 700 at max. In other words… PAIN.

Indeed. At least one game from the very early generations(MH1 or MHFU), then from the mid-gens(Tri/3U or 4U/Gen U). It would teach new hunters how far the series has come!
