Thanks a lot. This song is a treat. Definitively in my top 2 by them after "Nights in white satin". Bought the single in 1970 at it release in France and played it addictively a huge number of times. The mellotron parts played by Mike Pinder are ethereal, haunting and mesmerizing. Love the sad lyrics, the interlacing of the voices, the silky melody, etc.

When I got the alert that you did Melancholy Man…. I was soo excited! I have always loved this song and always dreamed of you reacting to it! The more of their songs that you hear, the more amazed you will be… really. Yes, Mike Pinder sang this. Usually it was Justin Hayward, sometimes Ray Thomas who also played flute and saxophone. There are just too many incredible songs by them that will blow you away..my comment would be too long if I got started suggesting them, I’ll just say, whatever you pick, you can’t go wrong. The Moody Blues… extremely talented, detailed and unique… loved your reaction, thank you!!!!!

Bros...listen to a version that doesn't cut off the melancholy man pleading at the end. This version was truncated, so the effect was truncated. In the full version he become completely overwhelmed by the other voices. Mike Pinder sings that part, most effectively. Great choice, great band, great show!

I was 13 years old and listened to this over and over! I LOVED the Moody Blues! Always new sounds! Soulful!❤ I was SO LUCKY to see and hear the bands of the 70’s and 80’s… Saw so many that the tickets covered my giant dresser mirror! Wish I could do it all over !!! ❤

Hi Jules, The Moody Blues were an incredible band weren't they, another one that I grew up with! I remember back in the 1960s and early 1970s, we didn't have much money, so my friends and I used to share a few of their albums between us, the ones I can remember are 'Days of Future Passed', 'In Search of the Lost Chord', 'A Question of Balance' and 'Every Good Boy Deserves Favour'. Gosh, such a long time ago but these album titles are so familiar! 👍😊

The sound you're wondering about is a mellotron , a special keyboard that plays entire chords with pressing a single note. This was before synthesizers were invented.

Actually... in this case, a Minimoog synthesizer was used for the instrumental bridge, not a Mellotron. While the Mellotron did predate synthesizers, the Moog was first created in 1964.

Gosh, guys, I haven't heard this song for such a long time - it's haunting, atmospheric, with beautiful lyrics. It's from the album Question of Balance, and I've been advised that it was Mike Pinder who is the vocalist here, not Justin Hayward. As I said, it's many years since I heard this song and Mike certainly sings it really well. Other great songs are 'Ride My See-Saw' and 'Isn't Life Strange'. Just for interest, Justin Hayward sings an absolutely beautiful song, 'Forever Autumn' and it was a big hit for him in 1978. It was from the double album of 'Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of the Worlds' (1978) and he was one of the guest artists on the album. I had this double album and it's an incredible piece of work, if you get a chance to listen to it, guys, please do because it's fabulous. Richard Burton does the narration and his voice is just incredible, it's on YT. Thanks so much, guys, for a really interesting, thoughtful reaction, I really enjoyed it, as I always do! This is so melancholy! It is indeed mysterious. I think a reaction to the newer Moody Blues would be great. They have a fun and more hopeful song called " I know You're Out there Somewhere" and it might be on the same album as Wildest Dreams which i saw youve already reacted to. I would be good to react to. I found you by searching BeeGees reactions ( big fan.) I really hope you continue to listen to the BeeGees. Some of the best songs you haven't done yet of the BeeGees: Nights on Broadway, Winds of Change, Run to Me, Love Me Inside Out....those are some excellent ones. May God bless you! ❤❤❤

Such a great band and such a haunting song. This was used in the movie "He Never Died" starring Henry Rollins. A perfect pairing as both the song and the movie haunt you long after you first hear or see it...

Yes they were a complete band. all five members wrote the songs and four of them traded vocals. Lots of great songs and a wide variety. glad you selected this rarity. another one to consider is "Isn't Life Strange"

I'd agree with previous commentators that the instrumental break sound effects are mostly or all Mellotron which allowed for a form of pre-digital sampling using tapes. The Moodies were amongst the earliest bands to incorporate the Mellotron into their sound.. Mellotrons were heavy cumbersome instruments which were prone to breaking down and soon faded in popularity with the advent of Synthesizers like the Moog'

Great reaction guys! The Moody Blues so succinctly express the idea of differing views, how through striving to understand how and why others developed their views is essential for growth, and how failure to even try to grasp this, even (or maybe especially) for those with whom we don't agree... who don't see what we see, leads only to 'angry voices on the wind" (hostilities, war, etc.) It's surely a melancholy song, yet one with hope for the growth mentioned.

I just knew Nights in white Satin and heard this Song the first Time a few Months ago and it was the same Reaction. This Period of Music has so many great Pieces of Art.😍 If it's possible to make Suggestions, I highly, highly recommend you "The Days of Pearly Spencer" by David McWilliams, or "In the Dutch Mountains" by the Nits. Most of those sounds came off of Mike Pinder's mellotron, which has taped sounds of all the instruments. The best substitute for real orchestra. Old school now, I suppose. He played the mellotron and sang in this song. And wrote it. After Mike left the band (after 'Octave,' late 70s), his classical, ethereal influence left too. The music became less celestial and more pop. Justin and the others still wrote pretty and cosmic music. But without Pinder's influence, it became a little more 80s.

It’s been so long since I’ve heard this song. Moodies are one of my top bands of all time. I think it was songs like this that earned them the tag ‘bummer music’. A friend called it that and I was offended because I loved them so much. But his criteria was based on how songs like this made you feel especially when high. Amplified feelings, you know. I get it, but it’s because this band was seeking Truth, and sometimes that truth was not all sunshine and puppy dogs. To get a feel for a more upbeat song on this album try It’s Up to You. As always, I appreciate the both of you. You feel like MY brothers.

Ahh, classic Moodies..Mike Ponder wrote and sang. I believe you did Question from the same album awhile ago. Perhaps you don't realize, the band had 4 strong singers and songwriters, who contributed songs to each album, plus the drummer who liked to contribute spoken words, sometimes poetic intros and segue pieces. Hope you continue exploring them. Suggestions: In the Beginning - Lovely To See You (2 songs together), Ride My See-Saw, For My Lady, New Horizons....these will give you a good cross section of all their song writing talents.

That gloomy sound is from a Mini-moog, an early portable synthesizer. Mike Pinder and Justin Hayward got the 2nd and 3rd ones ever made. Stevie Wonder got the 1st and Keith Emerson the 4th.
