SHOP Behringer Poly D: bit.ly/3kPJZKq
At current resale values of around $4000-$5000, the Minimoog from legendary synth manufacturer Moog is an expensive piece of music history. Used by many since the 1970's, included Kraftwerk and Dr. Dre, the Minimoog was one of the first major commercial successes in the synthesizer world after the giant modular synths of the late 60's. Only around 12,000 of these units were made, and the years have been kind to the unit we have here in the store currently-- it smells of pure vintage, analog circuitry and wood. Opposite of the Minimoog we have the Behringer Poly D, a very accurate analog replication for a small fraction of the price. Do they sound close to you? Is one worth it over the other? Let us know!

I have ordered my Behringer Poly D, we had two minimoogs in my band and it costs a fortune to maintain them. Honestly the sound might be slightly different but even two minimoogs don't sound the same. But for the price difference I can buy 10 Poly D and still have spare money. The features in Poly D are just amazing.

@@theoliviaarchives4794 The maintenance fees are around 300 to 500 USD. They are not to bad in terms of reliability, so I would say you need to service them every 5 to 10 years. Would you pay $10000 for a second hand original Minimoog? I would not. Like I said the sound is different but not by alot. Maybe I should edit my first post when I said it costs a fortune to maintain them!!! 🤔

You can always get a voyager if you want actual moog sound and little maintenance. Also old school minies are not hard to service yourself, the difference is that your mini will be worth $50k in 20 years, your poly D will be worth $500 if that. The poly D sounds similar but so do the many software versions. Get a moog if you want the moog sound, don't settle for clones, the OG is better.

@@daniel6959 I don’t have any hands on experience with their Model D but the Poly D is great and some it’s features definitely separates it from the Sub 25 or 37. For instance when using it in polyphonic mode it’s not like a traditional poly synth,. When you play a chord, each of the four oscillators are used, so like oscillator one will play the root note, oscillator two will play the second note and so on. So where it gets even more interesting is you can have a different waveform for each note of a chord, then you can pitch them up or down, so the third note of a chord can be a octave higher or lower, then add some glide going from chord to chord. But since each oscillator is responsible for each note of a chord you definitely have to make sure they’re all turned or you’ll get some out of tune chords lol. But I did end up also buying a Korg Prologue for when I want to play chords and save presets etch. The Poly D is definitely worth the money imo. BUT, the one thing I did notice, is that the Moog is a lot louder compared to the Poly D,

I think all of these comparative reviews fail to mention the user experience. Yes, you can absolutely get the Moog sound from a $10 plugin. However, a plugin or a cheap interface is not as inspiring as the experience of playing an old machine with its old interface. Like watching a movie, you can watch it on your small screen phone, or go to a movie theater. In both cases, you get to watch the movie but the experience of one is vastly different than the other.

The "experience" with almost any hardware is irreplaceable. The feel of the keys on a B-3 is like nothing else. An accoustic grand piano feels like no weighted controller I've come across yet. The real knobs and sliders on vintage gear is part of the playing experience. The Poly D is the closest clone to the original interface experience I've seen yet. If you want a Moog and an can afford either a vintage, or modern Moog they are out there to be gotten. If you're less about the experience or youre not a collector, the Poly D sonically is more than you could want. I have a Minitaur, a Sub Phatty and a B-Model D. They all sound a bit different and all sound great.

I have my personal thoughts about this comparison. 1) What is the quality of the knob's ? My Minimoog limited edition 2016 have a very solid feel when I use it. The Behringer. has a much cheaper feel when I try this out to n a shop. The Fatar Keyboard on my Moog is much, much better than the Behringer. Last but not least : with the original Mini Moog you don’t have the chorus. For me that’s not a problem, I can choose my external chorus effect pedal. An original Model D doesn’t have effects, arpegiator and sequencer… but my opinion : Less is more !

I'm more of a DAW type of musician and personally I'd never invest into a Minimoog. Not musically, or as a type of investment. Musically I think vintage synths are vastly overrated. However, after owning the Deepmind for quite a while now, I can say that twisting some knobs and sliders is way more inspirational than using a vst. Still, I use both since I think vsts are irreplaceable within modern music production due to automation, lfo sync, updates, etc. Personally I think vintage synths have had their best time. Especially with the synthesizer Renaissance of today. You can't just compare synths like the Juno's to a Deepmind or a Minimoog to a Poly D anymore due to all the modern features these new synths come with nowadays and how well they integrate with a DAW. I will always admire vintage synths from a distance, yet will never buy one, even though I respect collectors or investors. To each their own.

Does it age like wine? No. If the sound changes due to aging components, it is because the components are degrading. This might give a new sweet sound, but it is not the original sound, and it will be fleeting as components continue to degrade. Eventually it will be lost when you rebuild the synth due to failing components. Even when brand new, they didn't sound exactly the same. There is a limit to how perfect they can get the sound before costs start to grow exponentially. Most synth companies in the '70's were just trying to stay in business. They weren't perfecting the Steinway or Stratovarius of synths. Thankfully, the happy medium gave us good enough consistency at a reasonable price, and even minor variations don't affect the overall experience of a great synth. I have a Behringer Poly D and a Moog Matriarch. Different synths, but the Moog Grandmother (which the Matriarch significantly follows) is the current incarnation of the circuits that were in a Minimoog, and both the Grandmother and Matriarch are spin offs of the Moog modular synths. Comparing my Matriarch to my Poly D, I am very happy with the sound of both synths, and similarly happy they both have modern conveniences that vintage synths lack. Of course, if someone dropped a Minimoog in my lap I would be ecstatic to own a piece of great history and I would keep it and play it.

As I always say, an electronic circuit is an electronic circuit. You use the same circuit, it will sound the same - period! Romanticism is not going to make your songs sound better and with more tricks in the sound, let's not forget that it is a machine invented to imitate real acoustic sounds and the truth is that it does not do a bad job if we see the great limits that the minimoog has. I think you have to look at the 2 units from 1970. What would happen if your Moog did not exist and in 1970 Behringer Poly D was the brand that invented it? Moog would probably be criticized and scorned for copying. Ethics, morality, nostalgia, it is only for very old people, people who are old enough to remember all the music B-Funk, Disco funk, MiamiBass, G-funk, First steps of Kraftwerk, Funckadelic, Zap&roger. , Tyrone Downie (The Wailers) Bob Marley never had a minimoog, it was the keyboardist of the band Tyrone Downie who had it... yes, it's a bit for the jazz, black music, Reggae and Dance hall people of In the Years 80, was made of cheap Casio material. Well then I think that when buying an expensive instrument you have to value it as a real instrument, a machine that generates complete analog sounds, without digital interventions for perfect control that greatly influences the character, these 2 pieces are 100% analog. Poly D is a more advanced version to which they added Korg Mono/poly and Juno chorus extras with a 303 drive. Behringer Poly D has the same design as a Moog Voyager (it's a good strategy to break copyrights on the design). The music itself, when making it, forces you to value more what you have as an instrument, no matter how fetish something worth 5,000 or 10,000 dollars is, it will never be like a Poly D and it is a good investment, if you want more functions, tricks and more things that Behringer offers Poly D is the best investment and with the advantage that it will gain a lot of value in the future, being a reverse technology that rescues the analog classics. The arpeggiator and the sequencer are things that you don't have on a Moldel D or a Voyager XL, the sequencer is a very important thing, a tool to create complex melodies, with tricks for interpretation, and then 4-voice paraphony. which you inherit from the Korg Mono/Poly. Poly D allows you to have a minimoog that offers similar chords to the Moog Matriarch, but is actually a transfer from Mono/Poly that you can do arpeggios and ladder sequences with the 4 oscillators with different waveforms and settings. This is the value I give to Poly D, a replica that is a cloned minimoog, but it offers a twist to that classic version that we have known since 1970. The Minimoog is also useful for these things, but it is a very valuable museum piece that with use could lose its aesthetic value and its perfect condition for sale. Minimoog is perfect for collectors and discerning musicians who only trust the original versions. Poly D Definitely a great buy if you do Jazz-Funk, Jamiroquai style acid jazz or anything modern House, Techno, Trap, Electro, Miami Bass, BoomBap bass lines, Avant-Garde for an incredible price which is great. so that young people and fans can relive that era with the same workflow+extras. This was not yet possible in the 2000s. It is truly a great time we live in to access these types of workflows that you can only find on machines with luxury prices.

I had the Realistic brand MOOG synth. I used it a lot in my recordings, but honestly, the “MOOG sound” is really only useful for sound effects and spine shattering bass. Unless a performer is a pure virtuoso, I find the MOOG sound to be simply overwhelming. It certainly has a place, but I couldn’t have it as my only synth. I would rather a Sequential if I only could have one synth, they suit my taste more and are more flexible and in my opinion, more musical. But honestly, I might consider getting a Model D, that MOOG bass/tone is unreproducible in any other synth.

Dude, i agree. Synths get better with age. But please do me a favor and remove the plastic from that minimoog, its really destroying the vibe and its tone! ;)

I've got both. I've got the Minimoog Voyager and the Behringer Poly D. They both sound fantastic. I have to ask you a serious question though. Are you purposely trying to make the Minimoog sound like crap? I mean you are coaxing the worst sounds out of it! Instead of playing the same programs, you are making the Moog sound Like it's some kind of horrible kids toy! If you are going to compare the two, then compare them with similar sounds!

Honestly it's clear checking the video Moog has more character and is a real analog master synth. Also you need to compare what could be compared so what's the point to pay with the chorus and the arpeggiator. It's exactly the same story as for the Korg MS20 and its new version. I have a D and will never use something else when it comes to analog lead... If a D is 5k today it's not only for collector purpose but because it's better...

"Failed to pivot" is a valid economic perspective but not an appropriate way of phrasing the history of why the DX7 killed off companies that made monosynths and other electro-mechanical keyboards. For those companies there wasn't a digital equivalent to the Rhodes, Hammond, Wurlitzer, Clavinet, or analog monos. Asking them to pivot would mean to completely abandon what made them great in the first place. Much to his chagrin, the Minimoog was a pivot from Bob's vision of having an experimental sound laboratory available to a commercially feasible product that could sustain the company.

Not to mention they were about $1600 in 1973 ouch!! After shelling out the money needed for a Rhodes, Hammond B3 not to mention a Mellotron or Chamberlain, who could afford them? You had to be rich to play keyboards back then. Not to mention breaking your back lugging the 400lb B3 around

@@smitlag My father used to tour in the 70s in the Niaraga Falls/Canada area and he and my mother both told about all the times they got searched at the border when he told the official that he was a musician. They had to open the Rhodes up and all that, then repack all their belongings. I still have my father's '71 Mark I Suitcase Seventy-Three. I can't play the trumpet worth a damn.

i have the minimoog reissue from 2016. it's not just smell, or aura. the keybed, the response of all the controls, the build quality, and YES THE SOUND ITSELF are all so superior that MUSICALLY it is leagues above behringer. gtfoh

I don't have a reissue, they don't want to sell one. Boog is the only way to go. With a nice keyboard it works well - and people who can hear the difference need to see a doctor. xD

Boogs are for kids. If you're a beginning, get a Poly D. Once you understand the difference, you'll want to save up for a real Moog. Personally I think Behringer makes disposable musical toys and steals intellectual property from anywhere they can. Not a fan. They could give a crap about the synthesizer community or the long and honorable history of shared sacrifice people like Tom Oberheim, Bob Moog, Dave Smith and countless others gave to the industry for free. They invented MIDI together on their dime and game it away for free, FFS! I could never imagine Uli doing anything like that. You won't find him at AES. He's an idea thief and a grifter. Just my opinion...

This video is misleading... to make a decent compression you need learn to operate a Minimoog... (like pitch the oscillator to make them sounds right!) its like to take a Ferrari , bump into a tree and then compare it to 200$ car that drive straight... thumbs down!
