What's this? A person who actually did some good in his life? Talk about off-brand! Still, I think he's got an amazing story. From fighting the US in the Seminole Wars and in Washington, breaking out of Fort Marion, old enemies turning into friends and his own people turning against him, and who can forget the proper Exodus to Mexico he led. Seriously, I want to make a TV series out of this man's life, he's got it all. Also one of the rare cases of someone having a really close friend, I feel like I haven't seen that before. Special thanks to History House Productions for collaborating with me on this and making a whole video all about the Seminole Wars! Link to his video here: • The Seminole Wars | An...
Footnotes:
00:18 - Probably wanted to send like 10 white guys down to watch their slaves build a plantation of some description, but still, less than prime real estate
0:18 - Also I really wanted to make a reference to that guy in Monty Python and the Holy Grail who keeps building castles in a swamp and something something Disney it would've been really funny you guys but I was short of time and alas it can never be
0:40 - You may think I'm joking here, but no, his father's name was actually Charley. Except he was known as Charley Cavallo, which sounded like "Caballo" which is Spanish for Horse, which is how John became known as John Horse, but his name was still kind of Charley Horse
0:40 - John was also known as Gopher John due to some kind of trickery he pulled involving selling a Gopher Tortoise to an army cook.
00:46 - About the same time as the Seminole tribe declared war via the Dade Massacre, Osceola and a small troupe assassinated representative Wiley Thompson
1:05 - Coacoochee, who aside from his deceptively-pronounced name was also known as Wild Cat, has an interesting life story all his own. He was the son of a chief and expected to fill those shoes, but when his father eventually died (after the war, in Oklahoma) he was passed over in favor of someone who was pro-chattel slavery.
1:19 - Coacoochee actually gave his account of the escape, but I can't find it for the life of me. In any case, people have raised questions about how they fit through the windows, how they were strong enough to do all this if they'd been fasting, and why Osceola didn't escape.
One book said he stayed due to a sense of honor but that book also said he died of a broken heart when in fact he got a nasty case of tonsillitis. Further reading here: www.jstor.org/stable/30138496...
1:24 - At the Battle of Loxahatchee, they even managed to wound Jesup, who was later replaced by Zachary Taylor of Mexican-American War fame. Also he was president for a year and then he got a really bad stomach bug that killed him. And now you know!
1:29 - Fun fact! That sound effect, the Wilhelm Scream, is originally from a film that shot at the prison where John and the Seminoles were held prisoner!
1:55 - No, I didn't say "guaranteed they'd be guaranteed" that's silly you're imagining things
3:06 - Yeah, actually Americans weren't a big fan of Jesup after the false surrender thing. But then they weren't a fan of him doing this either. Just an unpopular guy all around.
4:05 - This is a reference to the time John and friends supposedly met up with General Sprague of the 2nd Seminole War, reminisced about the good old days when they wanted to kill each other, then the US army caught up with them and Sprague may have been responsible.
4:35 - I normally do my best to choose music that's representative of the culture of each video's subject. Unfortunately, Seminole music has little in the way of instrumentation and is much for focused around precussion and a capella, which makes for distracting background music. But if you're looking for better examples, you can find a whole bunch of songs here: www.loc.gov/audio/?fa=subject...
Music:
0:00 John Philip Sousa - Hail to the Chief
0:10 Kevin Macleod - Hidden Past
0:15 Kevin Macleod - Fuzzball Parade
1:06 Kevin Macleod - Faceoff
1:22 Kevin Macleod - Fuzzball Parade
2:36 John Philip Sousa - Review
2:57 Angelin Fonda - Smith's Speech
3:21 Kevin Macleod - Fuzzball Parade
3:34 A dramatic sting sound effect, not a music piece
3:44 Kevin Macleod - Fuzzball Parade
4:15 Patrick Ugwu - Spanish Lament
4:35 Marty Robins - The Little Green Valley

Today, descendants of the Black Seminoles reside in their native Florida, the Caribbean (turns out you CAN go further south), Oklahoma (where they are full fledged voting tribal members), Texas (descendants of the Seminole scouts of US Cavalry fame), and Mexico where the so-called Mascogos live on the same patch of border dirt given to El Señor Caballo all those years ago.

My mother's father was black Seminole from Mexico and my father's mother's father was actually a Texas Ranger in the early 1900s who married a native woman who was probably Comanche or Apache. I'm only guessing because they're from the Borderlands of Texas and Mexico which was mostly Apache and Comanche land and that's where my family is from, both sides. And my mother's mother was more than likely Apache also from northern Mexico near the border. And then my father's father was pure Spanish from Monterrey Mexico. My grandmother's father who was a Texas Ranger was a tall full Spanish man. So you can only imagine what me and my sisters look like with all of that diversity in our genes. We all look so different. Two of us are dark and two of us are light.

@@JackRackam Oh my, you actually responded. Im honored. Well i actually came across the history from reading a malasyian writers alt-history story. The story itself spans 3 generations of Brookes. But essentially a man named James Brooke of Britain was who was born in india and raised in england joined the army. He faught in the Burmese war and was injured and given a discharge. At some point his father dies and and he inherits enough money to buy a ship he names the "Royalist" and tries to break into the heavily pirate infested dutch east indies. He hears of a land of headhunters (Borneo) and tries to set up trade, but i wont go into details. The Sultan of Brunei (ancestor of the current one) solicits his help to put down a rebelion in Sarawak. For his success he is given the title of Raja of Sarawak, a point of contention with brunei history as the term meant "Governor" according to Brunei, but James took it very seriously. He is able to create an effective and powerful rival to Brunei by making peace and incorperating many native headhunting Dayaks, with his malays, and small group of whites. And by his death Sarawak is on its way to rivaling England in size. Theres much much more to the story of course. Its an interesting history of colonialism, paternalism, the changing bringing of of new customs at the price of old traditions. And they're reputation has survived relitively postitive in the state of Sarawak. I recomend Sir steven runciman's history on them. And Margaret Brooke's memoir for more history. Forgive the grammer. Im writing on a phone.

@@JackRackam The funny thing is, he didnt. It was merely the perfect set of circumstances that led to his rise. He at first wanted to make it a new singapore but fell out of love with the idea as time went on. What makes it interesting was his sort of go with the flow statebuilding. Kuching (his capital) had maybe 100 or 200 people? He rose so fast because he was 1) heavily against headhunting, and 2) heavily anti-slavery, so smaller tribes that were often bullied just flocked to him as a sort of natural protector. There were only some whites, so he simply jerry-rigged a sort of council system that incorperated native chiefs, malay traditions, and the simplified british common law. It was so successful that many loyal to Brunei, started to flock to Sarawak, which is why its so small today. Please do a video of it one day. All 3 Brookes led interesting lives, and how it all ended is a sort of tragedy unto itself. For the time it lasted it was a true multi cultural bastion of tolerance that many in sarawak attribute its cultural foundations too. Thanks for listening.

It's so weird how the impulse for people on new lands is almost always to wipe out the people who already live there rather than share with them. I mean, China got to be an empire through alliances and inviting those peoples around them to unite and they've existed for thousands of years. Yet they're an exception in a world of mass invasion and extinction, and it doesn't make sense. Surely sharing the land is the best desire for everyone, especially since it puts no one in danger to do so.

Fun fact this was not out of nowhere The Semionals and many tribes fought for the British in the war 1812 so this could be petty evil done in a name of payback.

Jack Rackam yes. He was the longest reigning danish king and leaded the country under the thirty years war. In Denmark we mostly learn about him going to wars and losing money he couldn’t bring back.

I don't know if you still take requests, but if you want a more niche figure to do, may I suggest Joe Cain, who was responsible for reviving Mardi Gras in Mobile Alabama after the Civil War? I don't think there's much else you can get out of that, and you'd probably pronounce Mobile wrong, but it might be worth looking into for a short video.

@@JackRackam Oh my god, you know how to pronounce it right?! I didn't people outside Mobile could pronounce it right! I always hear it pronounced Moe-bull. No, yeah, Moe-beel's right.
