Sims 5 will basically be an MMO, because they'll want to sell you endless cosmetics that you can show off in online play. It will sell huge it's first couple of weeks, just because of novelty, but people will very quickly get very sick of being nickel-and-dimed for every little item. That's when Paralives comes in and destroys EA's entire business model, offering a game you buy once and can enjoy fully, forever. Suddenly, you'll see EA giving away the farm just to try to keep people playing at all.

I personally define the difference between Simulators, Simulations, and Simulation games like this: "Simulators" are focused on re-creating an individual's experience when doing something, "Simulations" are software designed to accurately predict the behaviour of systems (typically in a professional capacity), and "Simulation games" are games where the core mechanics focus around tweaking variables in a simulation.
@gebus5633
@gebus5633 Жыл бұрын
Pretty neat way to put it. I member back in the day when someone mentioned a simulator game it was something like Falcon 3.0 that came with a manual so thick it felt like studying to be a fighter pilot instead trying to play a game.
@yksnidog
@yksnidog Жыл бұрын
@@gebus5633 @NixodCreations @GamerZakh Yes that's also were I would put the lines. But I would also use the experience aims to differentiate: In "Simulators" and "Simulations" realism is put before fun, while in "Simulation games" the fun is part of the core, which makes it sometimes not as realistic as it could or should be. Which also leads to a good line between "Arcade games" were realism is only as long part of the game as it doesn't harm the fun and/or expectations of the player. "Need for Speed III: Hot Pursuit" (1998) back than had even a slider from simulation to arcade but was sold as an arcade racer. And this was fine because even with it set to max. simulation a Land Rover Discovery could drive as fast as a Lamborghini. But your car behaved more than the real car it showed by design. That said I would think of most fun racing games more like arcade games with some simulation game mechanics than the other way around. Or wouldn't you?
@davidboge6966
@davidboge6966 Жыл бұрын
I was about to comment that one way to differentiate simulators and simulation games is that one simulates on the macro scale (multiple experiences put together), while the other simulates on the micro (one specific experience, usually in detail), but I think your explanation works.
@Ash_18037
@Ash_18037 Жыл бұрын
"Simulation games" are games where the core mechanics focus around tweaking variables in a simulation. That doesn't actually say anything useful, what are you defining as a simulation here? You already defined simulation as a "professional software package", so it can't be that. Anyway, I think there are really just 2 useful 'sim' definitions to be aware: simulators (eg: flight, truck, train, racing) and management simulations (eg: most of the games in the video). There is also a big overlap with strategy genre in many of these games too.
@NixodCreations
@NixodCreations Жыл бұрын
@@Ash_18037 a simulation game is a gamified version of a simulation. I suppose I should have specified that a simulation doesn't strictly have to be for professional purposes (though they very typically are), the important part is that it's "software designed to accurately predict behaviour in response to a set of circumstances". Simulation games let you change the circumstances and score you on the results. This is in contrast to simulations, which simply give you results with no judgement. Compare poly bridge to AnSYS, for example.

Can't wait for KSP 2. I think it's gonna be amazing (assuming they ever finish it). I just hope they keep the ability to make and use mods. With it being such a modifiable game, I think that's what made it so massive. It didn't matter what kind of player you are, there were mods to make the game how you like it. Some people want realism and a Hard challenge while others want to just relax and have fun. Some people want to blow things up while others want to perform a needle threading mission without a single scratch. It just didn't matter what kind of person you are (or what kind of mood you're in), there's a mod and a mode for just about everyone.

Wow, Im an organizer nerd and I have a list of all my games which are color coded for the main type of game it is. I struggle with some games because they can mix so many genres together. But you really helped me today because lately Ive been struggling with simulators vs simulation type games. Thanks, man! There are many games that have been a challenge to assign just one color too, but Ive had my list for years now, and it used to be pretty straight forward. Games have really evolved says this old man.

Yeah it's a real challenge and definitions shift over time. It's like when 'Rock' suddenly became 'Classic Rock' haha. If you go back to my survival list from 10 years ago, it looks like complete nonsense compared to today. Games like Starbound and Fortnite are in there. That list was very popular at the time but today people would be confused if those games are labelled 'Survival Games' because what people think of the genre has changed.

When I play a simulator I’m playing the machine (MS Flight Simulator, DCS World, Farming Simulator, Train Simulator) so I have to learn how to operate the machine and systems with little abstraction. When I play a simulation game (old Microprose sims, farming management games, railroad tycoon games) I’m playing a character who operates the machines and systems with a certain level of assumed skill and knowledge baked into the character through abstraction.

I played Astro Colony's demo and I enjoyed it quite a bit - except that I felt super let down when I finally built a solar panel and it only awarded a single power. For the tech and resource requirements it was definitely Not Worth It. But hey, that was just one aspect of it; I definitely liked more about the game than I didn't. You start with a single platform and build a colony, and something I don't think is obvious is that you can actually install engines and putter your little platform around space.

I think when you think of sim games like Sim City is that they are usually at the macro level where you're building large complex entities such as a supply line chain, or robust city through the use of resource management. I'd say they almost fit into the strategy game genre, but combat/war is not usually a primary focus or even an option in many of these games which is why we may not look at these games as strategy games because we think of games like Civilization or Starcraft. Simulator games I think focus more on the siming of a singular job or role such as farming, being a mechanic, or cooking and you are one person operating all the equipment instead or running the farm and tasking NPCs to do the labor like in a sim strategy/resource management game.

I've been playing sweet transit and it's very good, mainly because the dev used to work on factorio and has taken that train system into the game. Weirdly, factorio's system feels better than most of the other railway tycoon style games, due to the way the rails are pathed and the blueprint system. It is a bit limited in some areas but it has sucked a lot of time out of me just from how well it feels to build huge complex rail systems.

Factorio with the Logistic Train Network mod is hands down the best train system I have ever played with in a game, I haven't found any other game that can touch the level complexity you can put into a system since there is also circuits.

Personally Novalis and PlanB Terraform have caught my interest both have really unique aspects to them. As for the difference between Simulator and Simulation for me; Simulator is a representation of an activity or job; like fishing, farming, racing wherereas a simulation replicates a function, like a simulated economy, ecosystem etc

Thanks for the list! I really really want to KSP 2 be the game we wish but as they will release it as EA in february I'm really terrified that it will be not good enough as expactation is crazy high and they already step back with some plans :( But we will see. Lightyear Frontier caught my eye so I'm looking forward to that one and we will see if others will look good :) There is so many conveyor-automation games that I'll need some automation to play them all :) Thanks for handy list again 💛

KSP 2 will release on early access, so don't get disappointed if the game seems underdeveloped at release. It was announced that features like multiplayer, colonies and interstellar travel will not be available yet, but will come eventually. KSP 1 was in early access like that for several years and it ended up as a splendid game, so keep that in mind, be patient and give your feedback to the developers to improve the game overtime.
@_CJ_

@@sacopanchez151 They created big hype and now they release unfinished game more that two year later than was announced. If you don't understand why I'm not happy with that and with comunication they provided than IDK. I'll be there for KSP2 when it will be finished but if they hurt trademark and comunity, a lot of people will not be there for that. I assume that comunity will split and a lot of people will stay with KSP1. There is a lot of EA games I love and I love how they comunicate development and behind the scene stuff. I have no problem with delayed games but developer and publisher have to share it, say what is going on and don't be afraid to admit delays and problems. If you destroy the trust then there is no way back.
@laycey
@laycey Жыл бұрын
@@_CJ_ If you expected KSP2 to release fully finished (which you seem to), you clearly don't know much about the first. KSP released as an unfinished early release game before that was even a thing, and shaped the game around player feedback. It's also pretty normal, if not expected for games to release later than initially planned. If you're unhappy with that stuff, that's your own fault for having not only unrealistic expectations, but not being familiar with KSP's history and release model. There has even been considerable communication from the dev team for the past year as they've been getting closer to open access.
@_CJ_
@_CJ_ Жыл бұрын
@@laycey Apples and Oranges... Back then KSP was created by small indie team of passionate developers who want to make nice game. EA for that is great for all reasons you wrote. KSP franchize was bought by Take-Two which is one of the biggest game compaines :D Allegedly KSP2 is developed by professionals (well they have to change team and after few years of development they invite original devs into part about year ago too). If they released EA in 2020 as they told first time I would not say a thing. Now we are in completely different situation and you completely missed my points. What I expect now is that it will be like KSP1 with better graphics, UX and some new features - they step back from all the WOW features they used for promo for now and "unrealistic expactations" is the thing they promoted so don't say I have it :D. Anyway we will see soon so we dont need to argue ;)

Theme Park? /Bullfrog/? "That's good, too" - I miss that. I love the ideas in Horticular, and Plan B is on my radar, tyvm. Art Of The Rail - that segment made my weep tears of joy. I love that the Industry Tycoon aesthetic livens up TTD playstyles. Sweet Transit is a long-term project, but that's not a bad thing - remember how long Maschinsky took to get traction? Now look at it! Terraformers, to my mind, is a bit too like some of the Korean browser games in its style. Captain of Industry seems very similar to something I vaguely remember from a while back. That's a good thing, except for my worries about memory loss! Lightyear mech farming? Oh that looks fun, but Noble's Life had me twitching in anticipation - until we know more, I'll keep my Medieval Dynasty going! Nivalis is another worryingly browser-game-like jobby, but remember the old Jo Wood games? Yeah, it could be what we need to fill that aching void. I'm sorry, conveyor belts on Mars/ whatever? I'm overloaded, tbh. Foundry and the others are just...well, (sigh). The rural life around here ( East Anglia, UK) really does need an all-around approach, including a skillset that can minimise paranormal influences. Ranchers should do well. As should Elysian Eclipse. Weird title - what's being eclipsed? That said, oh, how very yes! Your thoughts about simulator games vs simulators are, to my mind, the clearest I've heard. It may well require a period of time for the penny to drop ( like when genres got sorted out initially in the...80s?) Even now there are "roguelikes" that are RPGs with a bogglingly dumb camera, and so on. I share your concern, but I think the ones who want to know will figure it out. What a haul, man! That was exhausting, as well as encouraging! We are lucky to have you.

@gamerZakh , of what you were asking... I think it's more of a "slide bar" thing... a gradient if you like... the more "realistic", the closer the bar is to a simulatoR, and the least, more of a Simulation game... but... too me, honestly... I don't feel the need for a divide at all... it's just a matter of how realistic you want your simulator to be, and there are niches for each... a more visible difference to me, is between first person interactions and not... I get dizzy with those, so mostly I play top-down stuff.
