On this channel we go deep... REALLY DEEP into abandoned mines and tunnels all throughout the western United States. We researched some of the harder to find mines and hiked or 4x4 back into them to explore and reveal their hidden secrets. Many of these remote locations are filled with cool artifacts, antiques and unique geology that will have you guessing as to why the old prospectors worked so hard to find gold, silver, and other minerals.
A&FP moves just a bit slower as compared to other mine exploring channels. Gly discusses why the miners chose these sites and he points out the geology and minerals that got them excited. Veins of quartz filled with gold and silver made many men lose sleep in the 1800’s and early 1900’s and modern prospecting still does to this very day.
DANGERS? Oh yes, there’s allot of dangers associated with old mines. Un-exploded dynamite, blasting caps, bad air, bats, spiders, and snakes all find their home in abandoned mine shafts and tunnels. Oh, and let’s not forget rotting timbers, flooded passages and collapsing rock!
Gly takes abandoned mine exploring seriously with all the proper safety equipment, training, and experience necessary to do this activity as safe as possible but that doesn’t mean we can’t have a bit of fun along the way. “Gly”, your host and his band of crazy characters “Old Bob” (Gly’s Jeep), “Quackers” (Gly’s duck) and “Bobbie” (Gly’s hula girl) are sure to brighten your day with their comments and silly antics. Heck, they may even give you a chuckle or two.

"And the angels did sing!" My first thought at this point was, 'Wow, that looks like a MINE!' It's what movies, cartoons, and video games have told me that mines *should* look like for my whole life.

I think I'm going to call this one the Carpenter's Compression mine. I've never actually had a mine stick in my head to the point I'd name it before today. This ties for number one right next to Thunder Ridge. They aren't comparable in any way other than both of them are mines. Thunder Ridge was just an incredible expanse of monstrous open opera house sized rooms beyond imagination. It was stable, to the point those rooms have stood for decades. This mine however was tight, full of collapse ready pressure zones. But the wood work and craftsmanship was unmatched. The ore bodies were astonishing. Blues and greens and greys and whites, veins and flecks and rocks of color everywhere! It was in the backfill behind the lumber, littering the ground outside, used in gobbing, sprinkled in the back, and ribs of every passage way, like stars in a clear night sky. I have to admit, this mine shares one other comparison with Thunder Ridge. It takes your breath away just the same watching it being explored. Tied for number 1 Thunder Ridge and Carpenter's Compression. You sir, are a master of your craft and I feel that had the worst happened while you were in this mine, you would have gone out in one of the best places, doing exactly what you loved. On to the next episode to catch up!

I felt at times like I was looking over your shoulder. That got nail-biting as I have seen you turn back from potential collapse areas before. This time you took us through them with you. The amount of pressure on the timbering was highly intense. So happy you found the escape tunnel and you did not have to go back the way you came in. Fantastic photography!!

I am amazed at all the extra material and labor in a copper mine. They had to be getting something else too. My guess is that 50% of the timbering is to hold waste so they didn't need to haul it out. The wood was not snags and scrags, it was good wood and poles. (and I don't see any forests near by) SO it all was hauled in. Gly, your videos are so immersive that it makes all the others hard to watch. This one is truly rare. Thanks for the trip! Dean

“Gly”: The backfilled stopes allow for two things. 1. The backfill supports the hanging wall between levels so the stope doesn’t collapse and 2. It saves time and labor by not having to haul the waste rock outside. All of the wood you are seeing came from a mill and supply company west of Reno Nevada.

That was an absolute journey through the mountain Gly. I'd say you will be one of the last humans to see those middle levels. If one of those sets gives way the entire fill will slip back down. Glad you made it out alive. Exceptional exploration

Gly, congratulations on your continued success with your Channel. I’m an industrial electrician and wood worker for a hobbyist, I came across your channel during the pandemic and got hooked. I have a brother in law that’s a professor of geology that has taught at many universities around the country. I always wondered what his attraction was with years spent out in the southwest desert with his classes, until I started watching your channel. Now even I enjoy listening to you about the history and geology of the old mines. I also need to say your filming is next level production, great work!!!

When you said “I feel like I’m stepping into a log cabin” it all hit me at once how well preserved and incredible that section was. To think of how deteriorated a log cabin would be from the same era…..so interesting to think about.

yes, that was incredible and incredibly scary. Wonder if the collapse occurred later after it was abandoned or they high tailed it out of there where you were exploring? IMHO, this was the most EPIC adventure you have shared so far! If it was not for the Genius skills of the carpenters who were involved in this mine's creation it would have been a total collapse many years ago. I really enjoy this one. I have a large TV in front of my treadmill so I can watch TV when I walk on the treadmill. When you came up on that miners bucket I leaned over to look in the bucket and almost fell off the treadmill. I sure enjoy what you're doing guy. You be safe and God bless.

As a kid, in South Wales, there we're plenty of abandoned mines, pit's and drifts, all types, muck tips a 1000 feet high. The entire valley hollow from mining coal. Looking down many pit shafts that we're open, so scary, you are amazing and brave, as all miners were, thanks, keep it up.

Incredible filming and editing of this trek into the past. As others have said, I’d love to know how these miners constructed the fixtures in that mine and where did all that wood come from. I couldn’t fathom working day in and day out in that sort of environment. Well done Gly. 😁👏🇦🇺

This was indeed everything you hinted at and a whole lot more! I cannot believe how immense that mine is and how very scary those bent wooden beams are holding up all those thousands of pounds of rock. Who knew that wood could actually bend that way? I was nervous the entire time when you'd slip into tight spaces all the while saying how dangerous it is, especially when you'd say all it would take is an earthquake at the wrong time. I hate to think of you being there when it can happen at any time. Please continue to stay safe, no matter how much fun you have doing it.

Beautiful! I love old mining history, the desert southwest, and minerals. You combine them all in such a fantastic way, love your video work and how you explain things. I wish that I could reach into the screen and grab some of the rocks you pass by. Keep up the great work! And stay safe.

That woodwork is amazing, just think about what that would entail to do this….Lines of people handing up the wood in a huge line, heavy heavy pieces of wood going vertical, guys holding things in place while other guys hold wood where it needs to be. Just amazing to do that

Gly, you are truly an amazing person. Thank you for taking all of us on your journeys with you. I can’t even imagine the feeling of truly being inside one of those. Sometimes my imagination runs wild when imagining what really goes on in those mines. I don’t know if it’s goose bumps, or my skin crawling. Gly Coolness your the best. How fortunate it is those miners timbered it up so well. For all the dread of having the mountain hanging on splintered timbers, if one of them had been less thorough we wouldn't have gotten to see such a fantastic mine before time and a good jolt finally finishes the job and seals it for good. You've done your part cataloguing something on the verge of beintg lost.

Awesome! Two thumbs up! That may be the real stuff for a documentary about the evolution of a mine after maintenance isn't done anymore. And why the sign "stay out, stay alive" sometimes makes a real and sudden sense :)

This has to be the best mine I've ever seen you explore. All the wood work and gobbing inside was absolutely jaw dropping. Those last rungs you climbed on the way out were worn down good. Those boys hauled some heavy loads up and down those steps. This mine has a lot of things others don't. The danger is real! People should STAY OUT of this place. The images of compression on all of the stulls are amazing. Stulls pushed right through the wedges. Huge timbers twisted like twigs. The amazing ladder works, ore chutes, and the amount of ore glowing everywhere. This is a really special mine, and a very special documentation of it! WOW!!
