When I first entered the monasteries in Thailand and Burma, I was taught everything is anicca (impermanent), dukkha (unsatisfactory), and anatta (no-self). The reason these were repeated over and over again is because if you see these, you see with the eyes of wisdom. Because everything is changing, the more you cling and hold on, the more you suffer.
To free ourselves, we need to quiet the mind through some mindfulness in meditation.
Then, instead of identifying with the changing conditions, we learn to release them and turn toward consciousness itself, to rest in the knowing. My teacher Ajahn Chah called this pure awareness, "the original mind," or resting in "the one who knows."
As the Jiddu Krishnamurti said, “It is the truth that liberates, and not your efforts to be free.”
With practice, we discover the selflessness of experience; we shift identity. We can be in the midst of an experience, being upset or angry or caught by some problem, and then step back from it and rest in pure awareness. We let go; we release holding any thought or feeling as "I" or "mine." We release the whole sense of identification, and the conditioned world is just anicca (impermanent), dukkha (unsatisfactory), and anatta (empty of self) -- it has nothing to do with our true nature. We learn to trust pure awareness itself. This is one of the ways Ajahn Chah taught about liberation. Awakening is always here and now. Practicing this way, your life is transformed.

Jack. Whenever I listen to your reflections my heart weeps for the privilege of being in your presence despite residing in a small rural market town in the U.K. So many of my teachers have passed without my being able to thank them during their lifetimes. I must not let this chance to thank you pass - being of the same age & ever mindful of 'change'. The teachings are so precious and accord with my own heart - distance is indeed no hindrance to gratitude.

My father passed in 2006. Throughout my childhood he was a heavy smoker until he had a heart attack in 1997. In the last few years every evening I get this smell of smoke out of nowhere. I couldn’t figure out where it was coming from. Then one day I just started saying hi daddy every time I smell the smoke and as soon as I say that the smoke smell fades.

Dear Mr. Kornfield........ I simply had to tell you that one day I simply stumbled across to you here, I was a bit of a mess that day. I sat in a car and listened to you on my iPad and it was quite a long video and the longer it went on the calmer I got. There was something simply about looking at you listening to your voice and your words that brought such peace to me........ tomorrow morning some thing may or may not happen. If it doesn’t happen it’s going to causes me stress I truly don’t need but after listening to you speak and you are dressed part of what I may or may not be dealing with come tomorrow night I realized that it didn’t matter because change would be OK and I needed to have faith that everything happens for a reason. This is my third video of yours and I am continuing to always hope to find another one because I don’t know of anyone I have ever listen to that good Karma me the way that your videos too and your words and your voice… Blessings on your head…

Thank you dearest Jack. I always remember being with Thay and the reminder that Happiness is available; help yourself to it! After I lost my leg in a near-fatal accident I was speaking with Steven Levine who said, “you were ready for this” I carry this understanding into each day that I am alive and living Peace, Love, Compassion.

Thankyou for your comment here one year ago (,I note.) It has caused tears to run from my eyes . I live with chronic pain, increasing, so that simple daily pleasures like walking, gardening are becoming off limits.I realise that I need to internalise the teachings much more deeply. However I am intrigued by Levine's comment to you that you were "ready" for this ....why "ready"......to be tested? to suffer?. I'm aware of the concept of God testing us in Christian thought, of the value of suffering as that which strengthens . I'm not really familiar with it in Buddhist thought. I have thought Buddhism presented a way out of suffering? Yours respectfully

My heart opened, transformed: there was something like in my heart and mind thinking no this may not be, why being born at all, installing separation. Somehow the heart healed while listening and opening up. Somehow heart hold death and live both as one. Death was no longer a reason not to be born. Balance, peace. A deep acceptance of the conditioned existence, live. Knowing the passing away, seeing it in its place, something was brought in line inside me. Like a fracture recomposed better than before. Somebody had told me that I had to be sad because of pain. Somebody shamed me for being happy while there was others in pain. Somebody shamed me for having needs. Somebody blamed me for being ill. I say : i am alive. I am in love. I am in peace. Yes, I am at home. Thank you, Sir, for this sharing leading me into reality.

In Knowing, We Miss That.. 17:25 The Magic. This Story, And When This Master Says; Who are we? Truly Enchanting. I suppose we decide if we, like waiting to explain about Santa to a child, teach them quickly the harshness of our reality, or let them live as much magic as we can as long as possible. I choose the latter. 🔮 In this way, we can also give it back to ourselves. 🔮🙏🔮🙏🔮🙏🔮🙏🔮🙏🔮

This Talk Is So Beautiful, It Almost Had Me In Tears. It's incredible with what we are going through that there can still be so much excitement finding a teaching that connects. The story of the Rabbi who says we place the teachings on our heart, and the student says don't we place them in our heart, and Rabbi says; No, God/ the Divine perhaps, assists with that, our job is to study the scriptures and place them on our hearts, for one day, when it breaks they fall in. This is the same as strengthening our practice consistently for the Storm, when painful emotions arise, we embrace them and take care of them, so when the time comes we can withstand the real Storm. Teachers Do Get More Beautiful With Age. Sadhu 💛

so wonderful & comforting to find you on KZfaq!!! Thank you so much. I spoke to you twice and you signed my book and I told you about the Kwan Yin I saw in Kansas City in 1976. I was able to whisper "O Nobly Born" and the rest of the verse into my brother's ear when he passed and I loved so much the story about the man who was talking to his brother after he died. So many blessings to you Jack. from Anna, Zoe's daughter. "O Nobly Born, listen undistractedly. May you be led by (Deity) may the Divine Mother, the faithful (Mother) be thy rearguard, may you be led safely across the dangerous ambush of the bardo, and may you be placed in the state of the all perfect Buddha."

That is a profound presentation - thank you very much. My concern is about what seems to be coming in regards to the changing climate and that there is the possibility of societal disruption due to water shortages in the SW US. Also that food shortages may begin to occur in the US and the world given all the climate change impacts and other things like the war in the Ukraine. Larger scale changes could come about due to the destabilization of massive carbon stores in the Arctic regions and the continued destruction of carbon sinks like the Amazon rainforests. So what this means is that there may not be a continued life; no sense of the continuation of generation to generation as our species may no longer continue as a species. Climate change may mean that we won’t have water to drink and food to eat in a society that is used to having everything. There may not be a sense of shared suffering where we pull together but more of a pulling away from each other. But still Jack’s talk gives me light and speaks to the possibility of realization within this suffering. I will listen to it again.
