This performance brings tears to my eyes and not even any of Dolores O'Riordan's versions can do that to me. I honestly think the singer identifies with the lyrics on a personal level.

As an ex-British Soldier who served several tours in Northern Ireland I can say that this version of the song is exactly what it should be, flawless in its own right and not to be considered in relation to the original because it is the artists right and our expectation to hear their take on it and consider it on its own merits. Anything else is base vanity.
