Thank you. Sadly, the job market and working conditions have become so unhealthy that I'm thinking of leaving academia for the private sector.

Really important and useful info for anyone trying to make sense of research funding processes especially the importance of knowing who's who in the field and addressing the ever increasing criteria. I think it was also really good that you underlined the fact that hundreds of excellent projects get rejected, which can then feel very much like a personal rejection especially if it happens more than once, which is not acknowledged enough. Equally important to highlight that winning a prestigious funding award does not guarantee employment at the end.... Solidarity!

Thank you! The randomised selection process is scary though. I wouldn't like to swap places with current PhD candidates knowing what awaits them!

Good job and good on you for not pulling up the ladder behind you. Nepotism is a sad form of corruption.

Thank you. Academia is already making the ladder longer and unstable for everyone.

The conservatism of academia is somewhat surprising, even when you consider its decentralized nature. Academics enjoy considerable freedom, job security, and few obligations. However, one might wonder why they aren't putting more effort into addressing the issues within the system. For instance, academia lacks diversity, especially concerning skin color, country of origin, and gender, which is particularly evident in fields like computer science. Moreover, instead of freely sharing the knowledge funded by public taxes, much of academia's output remains inaccessible due to paywalls. As a result, potential readers must pay to access research articles.i think it is crucial to recognize and address these flaws in the academic system to foster inclusivity, accessibility, and knowledge dissemination. By promoting diversity and open access to research, academia can better serve society and contribute to the advancement of knowledge for the greater good.

Completely agree! However, there's not even job stability now. Most academics I know have to go from temp contract to temp contract or chasing grants to stay in their jobs - which means only doing research topics that gets funded... And some topics get more funding than others!

@@williambarylo I know exactly what you mean. I realized that its better to follow your passion and "fail or be disappointed" then just doing what everyone else is doing. "Failing" may hurt but at least you know that you did everything in your power. Or maybe you need a vacation, I recommend Zanzibar lol

@@williambarylo No, I live in Canada, but I did visit last January. I went to a rural part of the Island; it was nice and quiet. I think you would enjoy it, giving you time to reflect and think. The people are good, very poor.
