dan is very wise for his age....... i have worked with mechanics 10 yrs plus older than him that have absoutley no idea. and im a qualified mechanic and i wouldnt know how to refresh an auto properly if it hit me in the face........so fuckin well done

This is EXACTLY the sentiment i get when i say design an arduino colour controller or something. "Where did you get the plans from?" i get asked. "i did it myself" i respond. And they say "nah, someone has to have done it before and you used their plans" . No... every single THING you ever touch/see/use/break/fix was originally designed/made/broken/tested by someone who sat down and said "i want to do x" lets see how we go. So I do that. Starting from scratch is not impossible. Nearly everything can be fixed or made given time and motivation. Good work Dan!

An auto is a big job, lot's of bolts that only fit in one specific spot. It's very rewarding to do it yourself though.

Those Holden Trimatics are also known as traumatics for good reason. I went through three "Reconditioned" ones with leaky valve bodies before I changed over to a 4 speed depress.

These old Patrols are so cool, and the trouble so worth it. There is something about Nissan’s, though, that is distinctly more difficult to work on than Toyota’s. I just replaced the clutch, starter, etc, on my old Nissan D21 and it was a bear. The front suspension, exhaust, chassis cross-members, and some of the front steering components had to be removed just to get the job done. Oh, and most of the interior, including the seats. It’s like the car was built as a knitted quilt where they knitted the whole thing all at once, not loop by loop. Nice work, love to see these Patrols back on the road!

We rebuilt the gearbox on my d21 years ago not too hard but anything with a torsion bar front makes it hard as you said having to remove half the front end 😂

Love it. Usually people would scrap it or go manual conversion, great to see someone keeping a clean classic old patrol on the road and taking the time to rebuild it

Well what should you do if you have greased that U joint too much on the drive shaft, did a 2 inch lift and thought while I’m under I might as well grease them then watched this a few days later like oh💩, any advice would be appreciated I was thinking if I just switch it out before stuff goes wrong (manual TD42 94) any advise much appreciated

The uni joints are fine it’s the slip joint that’s the one to watch just crack the grease nipple and release any pressure that’s behind it 👍

Unfortunately we didn’t film the whole process of rebuilding the auto as I did it whenever I had time and it would have been near impossible to capture it all.

Wow, well done. I though the converter was pretty much sealed so nothing from that should have got into the tranny. Or have I missed something?

You are missing the fact the converter has trans fluid pumped into it so it works

NEVER use Vaseline on a seal. If you don't believe vaseline can destroy a rubber/neoprene seal, so be it, but prove yourself wrong on a seal that's easier to replace than the rear main :)

In my opinion any seal that was intended for use with petroleum products such as oil or atf will not be damaged by petroleum jelly (Vaseline) and I have used it on many seals. Both the atsg rebuild manual for the auto and the Nissan workshop manual recommend it. 👍

@@dantheman7647 There are thousands of opinions agreeing with my point of view. If those manuals recommend it, then the OEM gaskets are not rubber or neoprene, but your aftermarket ones could be. It's not as if there is no easy alternative to Vaseline, now is it? Using Vaseline on your condoms is also a good idea, then? Yeah, Nah.
