Its revealed at the generator that its red paint. When the lights come back on the entire room is painted red, there are buckets of red paint, a roller with red paint on it several brushes that have red paint on them and the next white board after that room has a large note written on it that says "Buy more red paint!"

That feeling of tension you got where you kept expecting a monster or some kind of Thing that the tension was building despite nothing about the game was about monsters is a direct reflection of this games absolutely stunning level design. It was able to create and then hold tension for a long time without any actual threat! It's quite an increable feat for games! I love games a lot
