My Severin copy of Cruel Jaws with the Jaws 5 slipcover is definitely one of the gems of my collection.

If I remember correctly, scream factory did say on there Facebook at the time that the reason they pulled it was because they were not aware of it using scenes from the Jaws movies, and did not want to put they're relationship with universal in jeopardy, which is understandable.

Severin has said in their podcast that they did lose Drop Dead Fred because of that Cruel Jaws slip cover.

Severin sent me a non-slip-cover copy of this to review for my blog when it came out. I had no idea it was such a collectors' item! Interesting video.

It's crazy it's streaming for free on Tubi without any cease and desist letters from Universal!

I have the Cruel Jaws Blu-Ray and it’s honestly great to own the movie knowing all the legal trouble Severin got in and a piece of sharksploitation history. I do have the Cruel Jaws novelization which you can get under the table from Severin.

Drop Dead Fred is amazing

I was able to grab my copy of Cruel Jaws before it was pulled and still have it sealed.

Severin lost rights to all the Universal titles they were going to release. This included some of the initial VSL releases. I believe that Vinegar Syndrome worked out a deal with Universal to release these films, and then licensed the extras from Severin.

Ah yes. The Jaws film that isn’t a Jaws film at all and resorts to using clips from Jaws and Jaws 2 into the film itself to try and tie it into the franchise it’s ripping off. It’s amazing how long the Jaws rip-offs have lasted.

GREAT video Christian! Another film Universal bars from being released is THE LAST SHARK. It's kind of ironic how Universal claimed copyright infringement on this film and CRUEL JAWS and then turned around and stole the ending of THE LAST SHARK for use in JAWS 3-D. Oh, I forgot, they "confiscated" THE LAST SHARK and it's now buried in the Universal vault never to be released. However, there was a VERY limited release of the film in the 2010s in the U.S. on DVD by a teenager or someone in their early 20s. I have no idea how he got the rights to license the film because I never heard about Universal slapping a "cease and desist" on him. Another story you should do on your channel is the one on ABBY (1974). Similar to CRUEL JAWS/THE LAST SHARK...but this time it's about THE EXORCIST (1973) and Warner Bros. AGFA has a 16mm print but can't release it because it's now owned by Warner Bros. I read reports it was better and sold more tickets than THE EXORCIST which pis*ed off WB and they filed a lawsuit and had it pulled and confiscated.

I knew about the pulling of this movie and always regretted not getting the blu ray when I had the chance. But earlier this year went on Amazon and saw that it was being sold from a second had buyer (that buyer being Half Price Books) for 30 dollar. So I didn’t hesitate to order it immediately. To my surprise when it came in the mail I saw that it came with the “Jaws 5” slipcover in perfect condition and I was in complete shock and it’s one of my favorite stories to tell about my movie collection, the fact that I got an out of print blu ray with and incredibly rare slipcover in perfect condition for only 30 dollars!

considering Universal owns distribution on Drop Dead Fred it's probably a case of Universal pulled their license. I think if I recall at the time hearing that was the case.

If I remember correctly, Cruel Jaws also uses scenes from Great White(1981) which was basically the Italian rip off of Jaws that never made it to the US because it used clips from Jaws 1 & 2. So Cruel Jaws borrowed scenes from Jaws 1 & 2 and a previous lawsuit film. Great White is def worth a watch!! I love it.

Italian ripoff flicks are my favorite thing ever. I understand the legality, but universal needs to stay in its lane. Cruel jaws makes me happy.

Just a heads up mate but Encyclopocalspe publishing is reprinting the novelization to Cruel Jaws that Severin put out. They are also doing Chopping Mall. Thought i would let you know.

When Scream Factory cancel their release, I figure that was it. Severin came through, it was a brief window and I instantly jump on it too. So many films I thought were never, ever going to get a release, I mean; Raiders of Atlantis, Strike Commando, Robowar, Bruno Mattei's Terminator 2, Night of the Demon and recently The Spider Labyrinth, all remastered, amazing!.

I was lucky enough to pick up Cruel Jaws, brand new with slip on eBay for a surprisingly reasonable price. Funny enough, I think it was hearing you talk about on a previous video that convinced me to seek it out. Last year, my local drive-in hosted a Severin Sleepover, and I picked up the novelization they did. Not only that, but the author was helping run the merch table and he signed it!

Take a shot every time you hear “Cruel Jaws”.

Wow! I’m a big DDF hater, and as a VS subscriber I was enraged when I ended up with a copy of it 😂 but I love Cruel Jaws and have that Jaws 5 slip proudly on display. So now knowing me ending up with the (long ago flipped on eBay) DDF was a repercussion of Cruel Jaws I can rest much easier.

I ordered it literally the day before it was pulled. So glad I did. It's actually a pretty fun one.

Really interesting video. I like hearing about why certain DVDs are rare. Have you done a dive into Arrow's Savage Streets dvd? The story is that most of the films were destroyed in a warehouse fire

Im glad i got a copy of it with slip cover it shock me to see they put this out with jaws 5 on slip and put out deep blood i was hoping to see the last shark get released to go with cruel jaws and deep blood i got a dvd of it may never be put out on bluray 4k

I would guess, since universal ownes Drop Dead Fred, that they pulled back on the Deal after Severin basicly just used footage from Jaws, a Universal Movie, without the rights

I have my Cruel Jaws my the Jaws 5 slip. I loved all the slips Severin did that were like that. Shocking Dark as Terminator 2, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3, etc.

Hey Christian, big fan here. Just wanted to let you know if you do not know so already but Fandango at Home, previously Vudu, and the Apple store just released a 4k version of Friday the 13th Part 2. It's currently $9.99. I'm a huge media man myself but I just had to see what the whole movie looked like. It's just on par as the Friday the 13th 4k. Hopefully this means a physical version of Part 2 must not be too far off. Whatcha think?

I got the full bundle, the water pistol is fantastic as is the Bandana in fact the full bundle is cracking

I had preordered this and got the slipcover. Gotta say the movie is rather underwhelming though. Severin also had a new novelization they put out at the same time. They may not have done Drop Dead Fred, but at least they put out Overboard!

Too bad they can't do Enzo G. Castellari's Last Shark (L'Ultimo Squalo). Universal will simply not allow an official release here. Great film and awesome score by the De Angelis bros. Also, just so you know, in Italy, they do not trademark titles. You can name it whatever you like, hence titles like Alien 2: Sulla Terra and Terminator 2, aka Shocking Dark; or Zombi (Dawn of the Dead) and then Zombi 2 and so on, lol!

While it sucks that Severin lost the rights to Drop Dead Fred, I’m thankful that Vinegar Syndrome put it out and it was definitely worth the wait.
