Mary Mallon was born in Ireland in 1869. She is thought to have been born with typhoid because her mother caught it while pregnant. She emigrated to America aged 15, and originally worked as a maid. In 1900-1907 she worked as a cook in New York City for 8 families, of which 7 contracted typhoid fever, which was becoming rarer by this time. Every time there was an outbreak she moved on elsewhere. She was tracked down by an investigator but refused to give samples to him or a doctor. At that time it was not known that healthy people could be carriers, and she was the first confirmed case. Mary was arrested as a public health threat, forced into an ambulance and taken to hospital where she was forced to give samples, confirming that she was a carrier. She confirmed she rarely washed her hands. Mary was quarantined and it was suggested that her gallbladder be removed as the source of the infection, but Mary refused because she didn't believe she was a carrier and the operation was dangerous. Not all medical experts believed in forcibly quarantining Mary and thought that if she was taught to be careful about her cleanliness and ensure she would not give it to others she could be released from isolation, provided she ceased working as a cook. After 2 years and 11 months Mary was released in 1910, having promised to cooperate. Initially she worked in a laundry but it paid considerably less than a cook and so after several years she returned to cooking, against the health authorities' specific orders. She refused to believe in germs, or that she was causing people to get sick. She worked in restaurants, hotels and spas using a fake name, and at almost everywhere she worked there were outbreaks of typhoid. She was tracked to a hospital where 2 people actually died of it, and was eventually captured and returned to quarantine in 1915. In the end the only way the authorities could prevent her from continuing to spread the disease was to put her in quarantine for more than 23 years, although she was given a private one-storey cottage and after 1918 she was allowed to take day trips. In 1925 she was given a job as a technician helping in a laboratory on the quarantine island, and eventually died there in 1938 aged 69.
