*grind the coffee. Clear glasses are "clearly" only for latte macchiato's. There's rules for which cups or glasses are used for which types of coffee. =) We live between Darmstadt and Heidelberg.

Hey Zack, I hope you are doing great in Germany. You need a license to fishing in Germany, however there are so many advantages of living in Germany. 1. Health system isn’t as expensive as in the USA. It is a nightmare paying thousand of euros for your health. 2. You have at least a 4 week holiday. In the USA is different. 3. Germany is not a perfect country, but it is pretty safe to walk in the street, even at night. I want to hear you speaking German.

I was thinking the same, lol. But I'm American and I don't use a microwave for anything. I have an electric kettle and a toaster oven for quickly warming up food. I do have a microwave though since it came with my house. My mom uses it when she comes over. Got to have that canned microwaved soup. 😂

Right. At homes mostly coffee mugs are used. I never understand this craze about coffee in a class or in a chinaware cup. One I think is called "café latte" (in a glass) and the other "Milchkaffee" (literally "milk coffee", in a more or less elegant cup).

I dunno I guess nowadays you might have to second guess if 'mein Freund' means my boyfriend, usually it's clear from the context if it means boyfriend and many people don't care either way since it's kind of your private personal thing and not for us to judge. Many European languages seem to have that ambiguity actually.

Yeah...I almost made the mistake (but thank goodness did not) to search outside for Vicks( this is how in Greeceis pronounce like vix).... I said that in front a German friend and laugh very hard....OMG...how do I explain what Vicks pronounce mean here 😂🤣 advice...here is called wick 😳 I had big luck that I didn't say that loud front of so many people

Just say mein Kumpel or ein Freund von mir instead of mein Freund and you will be fine

No, a friend would be "ein Freund" while a boyfriend would be "mein Freund". just for completeness a girlfriend would be "meine Freundin".

Coffee in an glass ? German ? Oh no. Traditional we use an cup. Mein Freund, in modern Germany nobody is real interested in if this is your boyfriend or an simple friend. By the way like Your shorts.

True. But also "mein Freund" can used in another way. For example it's relativly common to warn someone bout somethin. Like diz: "Ey! Vorsicht, mein Freund." almost like: "Ey! Vorsicht, Freundchen." No one would suggest a partnerish relationship in this case. However to avoid situations like yours in da video some people use "einen Freund" (a friend) or just "mein Kumpel" (my buddy). Anyways, I'll take a mid one without mlik, 2 sugars, to go. Thankz, mein Freund. : - D

When adressing somebody, relationship status is clear between them. A 3rd person who could mistake it, is not involved.

I haven't had the chance to make this mistake [yet] but I only recently figured out this was an issue. I thought I just couldn't keep track of the words for friends versus boy/girlfriends.... I didn't realize they were the same word! 😤

You could avoid this mistake by saying "Kumpel" (this means "buddy" but definitely platonic). So in Zac's case I would have said "Ist es okay, wenn ich einen Kumpel von mir mitbringe?". A term for a female platonic friend would be "beste Freundin" (best friend) or "eine Bekannte" (an acquaintance).

Nobody Me: Hey it’s 40 out, I guess I should wear a sweater. Puts on a light sweater. Me: Hey it’s 30 out side. I guess I put on a turtleneck and slightly thicker sweater. Me: Hey it’s 20 outside. I am currently learning German and I really need to know this. Also, wenn ich über ein männlicher Freund spreche, sollte ich ihm "meiner Freund" benutzen? This means that he is a friend who is male and not a "boyfriend?" Richtig?

You can use "mein Freund" for any male friend. Any female friend is "meine Freundin". It doesn't matter if it's your boyfriend or girlfriend. If you want to emphasize the relationship status, you can say "mein fester Freund" or "meine feste Freundin" (my boyfriend/girlfriend). If you want to emphasize that it's "just a friend", you can say "ein Freund"/"eine Freundin" (a (fe)male friend).

"mein Freund" has a double meaning: 1. a more closer friend like your best friend 2. boy friend In the past (half a century ago) "mein Freund" was just a friend of a male but the boyfriend of a female. But since gay people can live open regarding their preference, "mein Freund" is also understood as boyfriend for male too. So it has this double meaning and depends upon the situation. If a six year old talks proudly about "mein Freund" he means his best friend. So there are subtle differences, because "mein" mainly indicates exclusiveness like in "my car", which means, it is only your car and nobody elses car. So in a situation like in the video as a male you say: "ein Freund" or when you want to emphasise a closer relationship: "mein bester Freund" or "ein guter Freund". And when you are married: you can say whatever you want and you don't need to worry anymore, that it may be misunderstood.

you can use possessive, but then have to use "Kumpel" instead of Freund to clarify. Or here in the South that would be "Spezl/Spezi". "Kollege" if a workfriend. "Kommilitone" if a study colleague at university, "Mitschüler" for schools. "Bekannter" if you just met or just aren't really friends You can also just say "Buddy", since Germans do that too, and still use mein. Or Bro. I mean you'd sound like a douchebag until they realize you're American, but you would be understood

When I was learning German I was told by my tandem partner about an opening at his company. So I wrote "Mein Freund [name] told me about the position." I realised months later what it was supposed to mean. Well, actually I wrote "MeinER Freund..." 🤦‍♀

I really don't understand why Germans think that way. But I also had a friend who insisted that I don't say "mein Freund" but "ein Freund von mir". Well, maybe the Germans are a bit weird in that respect.

Easy explanation, we don't have a word for girlfriend or boyfriend 😅 If you want to be clear that it's not your boyfriend or girlfriend, you don't say "meine Freundin/mein Freund" but "eine Freundin/ein Freund (von mir)"
