There’s nothing like storing a legendary racecar (or three) that still bear their racing battle scars from the past. And today we’re looking at a handful of Datsun 510 racecars from Randy Jaffe’s prolific collection - backed by a list of builders and drivers that reads like a damn encyclopedia of 70s racing legends.

In Australia we didn't really race our Datsun 1600s on the track, they had their success 'downunder' as rally cars and 50+ years on they still win Classic Rallies against cars 30 years younger. I myself ran 3 1600s (510s) over 20 years of ownership all with fully 'blue-printed motors running twin 45 webers, great cars and lots of good memories. The other main thing was that the 2-door wasn't sold in Australia, we all had 4 door sedans, sure a few, less than 100 were privately imported as SSS 2-door 1600s.

Nissan should make the 510 again. Make it an affordable (~$30k), lightweight, RWD, manual trans, independent suspension, about 250hp, and styled similar to the original in a retro way, e.g. IDX concept. This would be awesome.

WHAT would be awesome is some re-pop parts from nissan. i can't think of better advertising than seeing old 510s and 240Zs on the road. if they won't give us the idx freeflow- then how about some body parts for us?

Datsun 510's were also famous for it's rallying. My father had one of the first BRE 510's made in Canada at the New Westminster Nissan by Jim Black. Prior to that he had rallied another 510 at the Shell 4000 rally against legends like Paddy Hopkirk. Here he is in this video in the Blue Datsun 510 that took first place in class in P3, 2nd Datsun to finish (after the Factory Safari Datsun H130-u) and 12th overall over the 4000 mile rally. This was back in 68 and by an Chinese Canadian who had to use his middle name as his full last name Van Louie so he didn't sound so Asian. 2 years before Datsun took the 510 to the Safari Rally. I hear it was the first rally victory for the Datsun 510 from a number of individuals. I wish we had that car still. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/apOlpMufncfbnWQ.html

Not questioning your honesty, just your memory, and only because it's important to keep Datsun's North American race history straight. There were no BRE 510s make in Canada. BRE (Brock Racing Enterprises) was a Nissan/Datsun factory supported road racing team based in Southern California. The owner Peter Brock was the lead designer of the Shelby Daytona Coupe; The only American built car to ever win the FIA International Manufactyre's GT Championship in 1963. That said, many of the same factory team "Datsun Performance Group" racing parts were made available to successful privateer teams. For homologation in the SCCA TransAm series, Nissan/Datsun sold JDM SSS parts as dealership installed upgrade options. Although physically reconfigured like their racing counterpart, these were mild street performance parts. It was misleading, but in Canada this was marketed as "BRE Performance upgrades", and in the US they were referred to as SSS Datsun Performance parts. Although widely available to African Safari and Australian rally teams, real Nissan Works 510 rally parts were as rare as Unicorn farts in the US and only slightly more common in Canada. Thanks for linking the great Vid of your Dad's victory, very cool.

@@Datsun510zen check up on Jim Black and BRE in New Westminster BC Canada. Jim’s brother was Randy Black who was Canadian rally champion for team Datsun. In the ex Safari African works rally 510’s (mk2’s) in the late 70’s/80’s . And the first big rally win for Nissan 510 was in the Shell 4000 rally in the 510 . There’s stats on the internet somewhere.

Oh wow I remember Jim Black. I was a Westwood guy new lots of good Datsuns up there. There was a shop in Richmond called Toyo Motors owned by Bob Stevens he ran 510 and if I remember correctly he was the Canadian National Champion and I think he went to SCCA run offs in the US. My good friend worked for him. There was the BF Goodrich series at Westwood that was all stock 510s. Did we use ip a bunch of 510s in that class. Used to 20 cars out per race. It was replaced by the Honda/Michelin series that was hugely popular.i

Excellent presentation!!! Never had a 510. However, I have 2-71 Datsun 521 trucks owning one for 44 yrs while the other for 26 yrs. They are simple, easy to repair/maintain/modify. Even my father who worked for Buick 44yrs took delight in the simplicity of the L16. I moved many times here in the PNW even to Alaska never having a breakdown while hauling all my life's possessions in tow. Most folks don't know that the 521 was in the Baja 1000 back in the day beating a few of big cube competition. I have become a collector by default as they were super inexpensive to maintain and find parts for.

I lived in Indonesia and was born in 1980. During my senior high circa 1995 one of my closest friend own a 510 with the exact blue colour like this. He put a four barrels carb on it and went drag racing because I remember that era was all about going fast in a straight line. I never really realise that he probably inspired by BREs as no internet and such back then. He was a cool guy, he passed away in 2010.

Independent rear, front disc brakes, forged crank, forged rods, meaty head for serious porting... all stock. All you needed was; time to do some porting, have a custom cam ground, and throw on some side draft carbs and headers... and you have a screamer. That's what made the 510 a racers car.

Why does the 46 have blanking plates for headlights and the others have a grille work? Answer the rules in 71 & 72 you could only remove the headlights and cover them. A few years later the SCCA changed the rules to allow a grille work with a 1/4 inch mesh grille work to allow air flow to the coolers and induction system. The 510 had the headlights in the engine compartment making this modification easy, put the oil cooler where the battery tray was and open the driver side to allow cooler air to the induction system. The rule change also allowed cars where the headlights were not directly into the engine compartment to duct from the headlights to coolers and the induction system through interior body panels, think Alfa Romeo, Minis and others to keep the equal advantage. Fromer 510 owner, SCCA Scrutineer and 510 B Sedan race car crew member.
