Most vivid memory of this game was as a young teen seeing the swimsuit photos of all the female superheroes and feeling terrified that my family would walk in while looking at them.

The first time I ever heard Spider-Man swear when I was a kid was with this game. The game is pretty jank with some annoying story missions but it was also pretty fun for what it was.

This was my favorite game growing up. Me and my bro would play it all the time. Some of our greatest moments -web throwing each other off the bridge over and over -working together to destroy the map completely before we fought. Most fun on the Daily Bugle. -personally just flying around as Johnny Ohm

So funny thing about this game to give it some additional context. At the time of its release there was a fairly popular superhero-themed MMORPG called City of Heroes. A LOT of people that played that MMO quickly noticed the Invaders were a complete rip-off in form, function, and even a key plot twist about their true nature, of a major villain faction called the Rikti. It was actually a bit of a controversy back in the day (not the biggest thing ever but there were genuine debates on if it was outright plagiarism or not) and while it wasn't what ultimately killed the game from ever gaining traction, it certainly didn't help things.

I actually thought some of the EA characters were pretty creative. Like Johnny Ohm is a southern criminal dude who survived the electric chair due to an inherent resistance to electricity and so he got hooked up to a bunch of nodes. and fault zone is a Russian ballerina and brigade is a bunch of army soldiers stitched together. Premise wise they could be pretty interesting.

@@MontyDotharl EXACTLY what I just said! Johnny Ohm is just Cole McGrath from InFamous, if you just went all in with the Evil side first game. Johnny is literally ripping off Cole, just being a crappy version of Cole; even if Infamous came out after this game. Johnny still feels like a ripoff though, and Cole is way better. One of the imperfects is a Russian ballerina, which sounds like Tara Strong doing a bad Russian accent, one of them is is just a ton of army soldiers attached together, to form a bad character, one of them is a doctor who enjoyed killing people, and they all have forgettable names, for the most part. But I think I remember some of them. Niles Van Roekel is the Lex Luthor of the group, basically modifying each of the Imperfects bodies in a way that they probably thought they'd be getting enhancements to their powers, and he's also the main villain of the Imperfect's story. There's The Wink, the teleporting claw lady Wolverine just fought, Hazmat, a slimy green evil doctor, Faultzone, who was a ballerina, until her legs got injured, but then, Van Roekel, gave her new legs, which can literally cause earthquakes with her leg stomps, Johnny Ohm, who's basically just Cole McGrath from Infamous, but if you just did the evil side, and probably a lot more I forgot about because I never played this game, just a demo of it. But I know most of the Marvel cast were, The Thing, Wolverine, Elektra, Daredevil(but only in different versions of the game for some reason), and Spider-Man, Venom, and Iron Man. But I'm glad I didn't play this game. Looks awful, and with ea behind it, that's probably no surprise, as they can ruin anything.

One of my only memories of this game was the fact that one of Spider-Man's win quotes was "that was a web-slingin' ass-whoopin'!" And with me being like, 12, hearing Spider-Man say "ass" was all I needed to dedicate my full attention to this game. At least for the entirety of its rental period, after which I immediately forgot about it.

The fun my friend group had with Imperfects was the Versus mode. It was horribly unbalanced once you unlocked the lategame characters. Jank as HELL. And a buncha of funny nonsense happened on a regular basis. Highlights included: Someone dying during the "reset to neutral" between lives because a random physics object fell atop their head while they couldn't move. Spiderman getting web kicked by Venom, who immediately got cold-clocked by the car that Spiderman was pulling towards himself to throw at Venom.

I miss this era of low effort licensed games because at least you got a GAME. Nowadays companies shell out their licenses to make shitty gacha or mobile games. I'd much rather have 5 mediocre beat em ups a year.

I agree. I'd rather 4 or 5 mediocre beat em up Marvel related Switch games, than one shitty one with Captain Marvel, or Ms. Marvel, or Miss Marveline or whatever the hell her name is, ruining everything with their lame ass microtransactions(you know, from the 2020 Avengers "game"?). Plus, I absolutely HATE gacha and mobile games; because they look like they should early era ps1/ps2 games, and do nothing but try and scam you, and steal your money. Everyone's just a bit too lazy with their games now. I'd prefer to just leave the dark ages of Marvel behind, but if they keep this up, I guess we'll have to just leave them entirely. And speaking of that shit Avengers game from 2020, which was so awful, I couldn't play it for more than maybe a few minutes, or an hour, I can barely remember. I just remember hating the game, and wishing I were playing "Marvel Nemesis: Rise of The Imperfects", instead. Because at least THIS game; WAS a game. It had: Magneto, Venom, War Machine, Elektra, Daredevil, Wolverine, The Thing, Doctor Doom(I think?), Storm, Johnny Storm(The Human Torch), Iron Man, and Spider-Man. And The Imperfects had some good ideas for their backstories. But now, everyone's too scared to put out a new good Marvel related superhero game(other than the 2018 Spider-Man game with Yuri Lownethal as Spider-Man), and the sequel with Miles Morales, but I'm NOT saying either of those Spider-Man games were low effort, those were great. The 2 best Spider-Man games I've ever played. But I never got to finish the Miles Morales game, because my ps4 and TV both broke at the same time, so now I'm stuck without either of them. And Spider-Man has been my favorite Marvel superhero ever since the 90s cartoon and the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man trilogy. But again, I agree, low effort licensed games back then were at least games. Wheras now, they're lazy as hell cash grabs, and downright scams. I'll take a mediocre effort like Marvel Nemesis over a lame, boring mobile game ANY day.

I only thought it was a dream or cancelled game because I only ever played the demo of the game, which only ever let me play as either Johnny Ohm(one of The Imperfects), or Spider-Man(the best Marvel superhero ever, that's not Logan). But I'd rather play this game than the awful, poor excuse for a game that was the 2020 Avengers game which felt more like a bad mobile game than an actual console release.

Fun fact: EA Chicago had planned to make a next gen sequel to Nemesis for the Xbox 360 and PS3 titled Marvel: Chaos with a 2008 release. However, it was canceled because of Marvel terminating their contract with EA and the Chicago studio shutting down.

This game was awesome. I remember having a sweaty match with a friend with me as spider man and him as venom. Its insane when you are good at the game. It wasnt a bad idea , it was just really unbalanced.

Fun fact: I actually bought this for my PS2 while I was in college. We played this in my dorm with a bunch of the mates on the floor in the lobby, getting drunk, making tournaments. It was fun...for a brief moment. Problem of this game is that it got redundant with no variety in combos, stories, extra content, etc.

20:46 I don't know, I think a Zack Snyder version of Spider-man wouldn't be bad, just that the movies would be incredibly short due to Spiderman just killing his enemies with guns and swords (actually, being webbed up into suffocation would be an even edgier way to kill his foes) before they can actually kidnap Mary Jane or whatever.

I always remember this game for having the pre RDJ Iron Man, the one that was considered easily replaced by War Machine, where the only thing the public knew about his was that he was a drunk, and had a weird suit. It's always interesting to see the pre-movie representation of these characters.

I remember when I discovered Magneto could launch objects like missiles when pressing square after using his magnetic grab to pick up an object he became ridiculously OP if someone was flying/jumping near a taxi you could launch it upwards and send them flying across the screen XD

We're tue comics bad-naw, but yes they were, but the origin stories were... Actually pretty decent. Wink, Paragon, Hazmat, and Johnny Ohm we're actually pretty fun to play as, when you're playing it right. In 2005 and 2006, I played this non-stop in both summers with my friend who owned it. What an age!

I do remember getting this game on PSP as a birthday gift when i was 13 years old and enjoyed it at the time. I noticed that the PSP version was very different from the console versions since in the PSP version, it was pretty much an arcade ladder type like you mentioned, Matt. As for the PSP version, the only characters that were exclusive was Captain America and Doctor Doom.

This game was the beginning of the end of my naïveté regarding game development. Being 2005, where I was a young recent college grad holding down a crap job and the internet/social media not being a thing yet (heck, KZfaq was barely a thing), seeing this game baffled me. I thought “why would Marvel go with anyone else but Capcom for fighting games? They represented the Marvel Universe so perfectly, there’s no reason to go with anyone else.” I was not aware of Marvel licensing their properties to Capcom in the 90s primarily to relieve their debt, that Marvel didn’t really care how well their properties were represented so long as they were getting the money for them. I wasn’t even honestly aware that this was the dark age of fighting games, given Namco kept Tekken & Soul Calibur moving along just fine, Mortal Kombat kept getting new entries, various other companies released their respective fighters, and even Capcom trickled out the odd new game with plenty of collections that I was none the wiser. Really, it wasn’t until Street Fighter IV that I learned how bad things were with Capcom fighters (which is why the last 9 years following their botching of Darkstalkers Resurrection has made me all the more angry). Considering EA and Disney are tight regarding the Star Wars games, it’s a good thing Marvel cut ties with EA before they were bought up. It sucks that artistic and masterful game development always come second to a financial bottom line for both Capcom and Marvel, because if they had more faith in each other, we could have had a much better Marvel Vs Capcom Infinite that wouldn’t have made the past 9 years so terrible. Things may not be perfect, but we can always remember how worse it could be.

I remember having fun with the game. But my biggest memory of this game is that I couldn't seem to finish a Venom side mission at one point in the story. So I decided to continue the story, which eventually involved Venom dying. After Venom died I lost access to about half the roster and decided to return the game to Blockbuster and get something else.

My synapses slowly reformed a disgusting memory of playing a lot of versus mode (alone) for a couple days and wanting to be venom so I looked up cheatcodes for it but the only way to get more characters was to beat certain stages so I just dropped it and never thought about it again.

Seriously, I used to own both games on the Gamecube and when I lost them both I was devestated that I couldn’t find SSS yet I couldn’t care less about finding MN . . . until I found said game beneath a storage box . . . and it still works . . . I remember when I played this game as a kid. The disk was fucked and storymode just wouldn't work past a certain point. So, in order to unlock all the characters, I just kept playing vs matches and making Venom jump off a roof over and over and over again.

I had so much fun with this game when I was little playing with my Dad and I do love the dark tone and art style of this game, it got me more into characters like Daredevil and Elektra, and it also really got me into the Ultimate Marvel comics since you can unlock an Ultimate X-Men comic which also has Wolverine narrating and talking about his views about the events that happens in that comic and also you can unlock an Ultimate Fantastic 4 comic. Would have loved to have seen characters like Punisher, Blade, Ghost Rider, Carnage, Sabertooth, Psylocke, Rogue, Gambit, Hulk and Dr. Doom as playable characters in this game.

This game is interesting and had some concepts that were different for it’s time. When I initially played it I get the impression that this game is trying to be like Mortal Kombat with Marvel Characters but rated T. The story also starts out with some characters being defeated setting this dark tone in motion. But as the story missions go on there’s a point where the mission selection turns red and which ever mission you choose results in the supposed “death” of a marvel character whether it’s vs an imperfect with their dark backstory cutscene where the main alien bad guy Rokel finds them and makes them an imperfect, or another marvel character infected by an alien device. Apparently they just get defeated but some characters finishers look like they straight up disintegrate or kill. That aside the game centered around this character named paragon who, now that I think about it, is like a female equivalent of wolverine but like an Alien weapon X that can shoot lightning from her extending arm blades. The ending also kind of confused me too because I thought that with the alien invasion being carried out by Rokel and him being defeated by Paragon, she and the other imperfects assimilated the defeated marvel characters which would make sense for the title being rise of the imperfects, but supposedly they share the earth with marvel’s heroes. The game also had collectible cards that had information and two comic book commentary voice overs on Fantastic Four and an X-men comics which was weird but interesting. Aside from that this game is strange horrendously unbalanced, but fun once you understand its mechanics and strategies but I’ll always remember it as the game where Spider-Man says *”You know what we call that. We call that a Webslinging-Ass Kicking”*

A friend of mine worked on the first Marvel: Ultimate Alliance. To answer one of your questions, yes, at the time there wasn't just a "Marvel" license. For instance, Vivendi had the rights to all things Hulk at the time, but Raven was hoping to use him in UA. They worked out a deal so the character got made, but then at the last minute (IIRC, just a week or so before they were going to go gold) Vivendi changed their mind. My friend (and all of Raven) were pissed, and ripping out a completed character at the 11th hour was its own challenge. Other stuff eventually happened and they were able to offer Hulk as DLC.

I feel like Wolverine is the last superhero who should have a wall run. Also, in regards to the licensing stuff for specific heroes, it depends. Like now Sony has the exclusive rights to Spider-Man in games (outside the mobile market). For Spider-Man to appear on anything not made by Sony, Sony has to approve of it. That's why Spider-Man was gonna be Playstation exclusive in the Avengers game... until they just never added him. It's entirely possible that because Activision had a Hulk game coming out that very same year, they had some kinda exclusivity set up and didn't agree to let EA use him. Or possibly Marvel didn't approve of Hulk appearing, similar to Disney shooting down attempts to add X-Man to MvCI, to avoid competing with themselves.

My brother and I got this game for the GameCube whenever it came out and we played the shit out of the versus mode. I was about 8 years-old and even though my brother was 13 years-old, he was (and still is) terrible at video games, so we never beat the story. We unlocked all the characters and stages exclusively through playing versus matches. We enjoyed it at the time. My brother liked it because it was EDGY and COOL and THEY CURSED and he could win versus mode over and over again. I liked it because the game had both Spider-Man AND Venom and that was always my favorite match up as a kid. I revisited it when I was 16 and finally beat the story and found out that we were stuck on the second-to-last mission of the game, but most importantly the story didn't resolve. It really highlighted just how bad the game was. The graphics were somewhat interesting, but everything just blended together with the same color palette. The dynamic camera is cool at first but gets very annoying with how much it slows down the gameplay. The thing that bothers me the most, however, is the fucking music. It's surprisingly understated, which is not something you want whenever you're playing a FIGHTING GAME of all games. It just feels like you're playing in silence most of the time, which definitely does NOT help this game's presentation. Overall, I give it was 4/10. Thanks for reading my impromptu review.

This game is the GOAT Marvel arena fighter. It was so fun and I still have it to this day. Use to play it with my cousin all the time!! Story mode was all over the place but the versus mode was amazingly fun and the characters were great too. Not to forget that this game had actual fatalities which none of the Marvel games even dare to do??? Spider Man used trash talk like a grown up man. I wish they had made a sequel to this.

I enjoyed this game when I rented it. My brother kept kicking my ass with Spider-Man. So "Web Slingin' Ass Kickin'" is burnt in my brain. Until I played Iron Man and bodied him. Game's admittedly a little poopy, but decent memories were had

That's a neat idea, though. Instead of a generic RAGE METER, it's different types of meters with different effects based upon the character. So like, Deadpool has something like Jetstream Sam's taunt or God Hand's dynamic difficulty where enemies get more aggressive/reckless and take more damage as you clown on them.

I played the crap out of this a long time ago with my little sister. Magneto was probably my favorite character. If I remember correctly, you can fly around, and his "fatality" was filling the opponent with some sort of ball bearing(s)?

I have this game in my CD case that's mainly PS2 games. Since it's alphabetical, it's most likely right next to my copy of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 that's worth like $160.

i rented this as a kid and my mom hid it from me after she saw the sai girl’s finisher. she said it was because she thought the game was going to be “animated”. i had no idea what she meant at the time but now i realise she just meant cartoony lmao

Rage doesn't increase damage, it gives you infinite special which can be useful as it allows you to infinitely use your super attacks and your mobility (sprinting, flying, swinging, teleport, wall running/climbing) during that time. Some characters have longer lasting rage than others There are 7 stages in this game that get constantly reused in the story mode. There are some different parts of each stage that only get used in certain missions but a lot of the time, the only differences between missions is that you start at one side in one mission and then start at the other side in another mission. Other than that, the only changes are the enemies you fight which generally get stronger the further into the game you get

So, DD and Torch were in all console versions EXCEPT PSP, but CAP and Doom were exclusive to the PSP, and so was someone else... I remember looking into a lot when I was a kid because I LOVED this game, mainly because it was like a bunch of Marvel characters, hated the story, but had a GREAT time playing it with my brother, I just remembered loving like the jumping around and whipping shit across the Avenger's Mansion level at my brother and we loved how when you were sent flying you'd break through shit. I don't know I think it's a fun time for maybe a couple hours with some friends, but it's also been a LONG time since I've played it too.

I agree, MUA and X Men Legends were amazing. Unfortunately there were no such games since then, well Spider Man PS4 was great, but i need more than 1 decent game in 10+ years)

This needs to be on ps4. Once you understand the mechanics, it was really fun. Everyone have fatalities. Wolverine's was one of the best fatalities in the game.
