Shooting a longbow is some of the most fun I've had shooting a bow in years. Removing the need to be perfect and enjoying the experience of shooting a longbow has brought joy back to archery. I shoot several different targets at various ranges and discuss form in traditional archery.

So cool to see you shooting a longbow. I’ve shot a longbow for over 30 years. I never worried about exactly how many yards the target was. You hit the nail on the head when you said “just have fun”. Enjoy !

Love seeing someone like Jake move from one discipline to another, because they highlight the important things about trad archery: the fun! People in all disciplines can get hung up on dogma and definition about what it is or isn't. And some forums can be a mine field for innocent questions from newcomers. Seeing someone like Jake pick it up and enjoy it is an encouragement to anyone else who wants to give it a try.

I couldn't agree more. After a few years of competing with a barebow the pressure for results took away all the pleasure of archery. I moved to a WA traditional (ILF) bow and instinctive shooting and never looked back. A few weeks ago I got my first longbow and I can't put it down, I'm shooting more arrows now than I did training for competition. Also, it's great that you're a true lover of archery, someone who appreciates all different styles

First week of June 2023 the Howard Hill Classic near Bessemer, Al. Tannehill State Park, 150+ trad' archers, 30+ 3-D targets on a mile long trail, vendors, practice range where I get to experiment with equipment....fun stuff. 2 feet wide by 10+ feet long of glue backed carpet rolls into a good animal torso. Tie with 550 cord. Hang on a tree or on the ground...arrows pull easy, inexpensive, takes 1000s of arrows. "Become The Arrow" by exhibition long bowman Byron Ferguson is a good beginner text. Jake's learning curve is more advanced. One may build upon the other. Love what Jake is doing........I've been trad' shooting for about 6 years and can 'scare' a tennis ball at 20 yards, WOO-HOO!

Fun things to try: Speed shooting. Try to get off a certain number of arrows in a set period of time. Shoot while moving. Start with an arrow nocked, arrows and eyes pointed at the ground. Take a single step in any direction with either leg. In the space of that step, sight the target, draw and loose. Change your position. Take a knee, shoot from a seated position, prone face up, prone face down. Shoot from an elevated position, or at an elevated target. Tennis balls also make spectacular targets when suspended over a foam backing or straw bale. Bright yellow in the sun, but unlike a paper target, you have to hit them square to penetrate. Looking forward to seeing you try a thumb-draw technique.

You may want to look for Big Jim Babcock at the Florida shoots. He runs Big Jim's Bow Company and would probably be a vendor. He is well respected in the trad community. Also, this traditional archery content is great.

It's funny that you grew up in an archery rich area and moved to another. Just south of Ocala is a little town (that's just about swallowed up by the Villages) called Lady Lake. My wife grew up there and her Grandfather used to own a fishing/archery shop there (Sportsmans Headquarters I think). He was a huge part of making archery popular in that area starting in the 1940s. He started with a road side archery stand in Miami and then moved it to Lady Lake (just a row of targets and some bows/arrows to rent). He made all of own equipment, was a state champ in PA and FL and was an integral activist in legalizing bow hunting and bowfishing in FL. My father in-law loves to tell me how they brought Ben Pearson bowfishing for the first time. Ben had an 80 lbs bow and was shooting an arrow with a frog gigg on the end. Every fish he shot would split in two lol. I was able to get his scrap book that he kept from 1938 to the 60s and a little into the 70s. Tons of articles and photos of my wife's grandfather, Howard Hill, Olympians, etc. We even have some of his awards. There used to be a club "Leesburg bowmen" (If I remember right) right on 441. A lot of history there!

"a clensing for the soul" pretty much sums up what a flatbow shooting is. I'll risk a tip: rather than a glove/tab, put a piece of catheter tube on the bowstring (match the diameter of it so that it is snug but still revolves around the string freely). It will be light enough not to rob the bow of power or make the string go too wobbly but will protect your fingers magnificently. Cheers

I'm very proud of you! There is no such person who does not aim with the bow. Instinctive shooters also aim...there was a guy who was a very good instinctive shooter. Once he tried the shot in a dark room. He couldn't even see his hand, it was so dark... he had to hit a laser light. He had never made such a big splash in his life. He ridiculed himself for his paralysis. Anyway, the instinctive shot is only effective at short range, about 20-30 yards. Most good shooters (even if they deny it) use one of many aiming methods. Or, depending on the distance, he mixes different aiming techniques. Neither aiming method is something to be ashamed of, the point is that the arrow hits the desired target. And to give you pleasure. There are many nice videos on the net about 3D archery. There aren't many lyrics, just soothing music. And lots of good shots. That's when I'm happy too. It's like I'm there too. I would love to watch a 3D tour with you and your wife (I'll leave the music to you).🥰🥰🥰

@@davepersich3035 Howard Hill aimed with split vision. In other words, he was looking at the target, but his subconscious "saw" the tip of the arrow. I only mention it as an interesting fact that those who shoot really well with a bow are also good at other things, where hand-eye work is important. For example, you are good at drawing or painting, or accurate with a firearm, excelling at some kind of ball game, etc.

Nice to see a "serious" world class competitor in one discipline rediscovering the joy of a sport that they once had, even if in a different discipline altogether. Sometimes becoming TOO serious about a passion is detrimental to the joy that attracted us in the beginning. When a "hobby" becomes "work" it often ceases to be fun and is just a job. Relax, explore and enjoy! Life is too short to do otherwise...

Jake, can't wait to hear your comments about horsebow shooting. Always wanted an Olympic archer with already a perfect form to try other styles. I have just posted: " bleeder's hold is the best because it involves no effort or ARTIFICIALITY" to your bicep tension video. Arab Archery is an interesting read. Olympic form details apply to any other archery - I think. It would also be interesting to what extend your Olympic form applies to different position shooting: sitting, squatting, bending really low etc. All the best from me.

You are doing really good your form and release looks good. I'm not sure what you meant about trad release but the release you are doing is right and looks good. It takes lots of practice but you already know that. Just shooting arrows and having fun is what it's about. Darren

Obviously, your experience as an Olympic archer is helping you with the transition to trad archery. Your learning curve will probably be much shorter than most. I started trad archery about two years ago and absolutely love it. Maybe I'll see you at ETAR one of these days. Enjoy the journey!!

given your experience, I assumed that you started out with traditional archery. So Im happy that you're doing this now.

One of my grandsons got me to take up Trad Archery again after a 50 year hiatus. That was about 7 years ago and I’ve been shooting Trad ever since. I tried to get my brother-in-law into it, but he’d see people shooting really tight groups with compounds at the range and was frustrated that he couldn’t instantly do that on a recurve shooting “Trad”. I told him not to expect groups like that with traditional archery without lots and lots of repetition needed to ingrain his muscle memory. He couldn’t be troubled with that and quit, switching to a compound bow. Trad archery definitely isn’t a sport for instant gratification. It is simply fun. I thrive on my gradual improvement and know that I might need to shoot 6-10 arrows at the beginning of a session to get back into the “groove”.

Jake, glad you’re enjoying yourself. I shoot barebow but on my terms at various distances and targets. I have a 3d course at my place in mid Florida with 30 targets that incorporate native Florida animals. I have no idea what the distances are except for a warm up target that I tell everyone is 20 yards. Former military that just enjoys himself and gets as much enjoyment in teaching the sport that I do in the actual shooting. If you ever pass through Ft. Pierce it takes 50 minutes to an hour to quickly shoot the course and 1.5 at a more relaxed pace. Enjoy…

You probably already know this as an Olympic archer, I shoot with an open stance and it helped with using more of my draw arm to draw heavier weight but also reduced the string slap on the wrist. Idk... might help. Love seeing you on a longbow man, sweet arrow set up too! Also I found a bicaster traditional 3under tab to be my favorite tab for archery. It's heavy, it looks kinda trad, and it's got lines on it if you care to string walk (I don't but it's helpful to those who do)
