High above the Pacific Ocean, northeast of New Guinea, a single Allied American plane cruised through the night sky on patrol on January 10, 1943.
Below, the moonlit waves seemed peaceful despite the Pacific Theater being in full swing for over a year.
Suddenly, the pilot's eyes caught a glimpse of movement-a massive dark silhouette cutting through the water. It was USS Argonaut, the United States Navy's largest submarine, fresh from attacking a Japanese escort, part of a large convoy.
As the plane drew closer, the crew realized the true scope of the scene unfolding below. Argonaut was not alone. Now, a formation of Japanese destroyers surrounded her, closing in like predators.
Flashes of light erupted in the water. Explosions from depth charges sent shockwaves through the sea. The plane's crew could do nothing but watch as Argonaut was pounded time and time again by shells.
The submarine’s bow broke the surface at a sharp angle, a sign of severe damage. The pilots watched in quiet shock as the worst loss of life in American submarine combat history unfolded in the waves below.

Your description of the Makin raid is a bit off. The issue with the rafts was more of a problem when the Raiders tried to leave the beach and return to the subs. Also they were able to land undetected - the Japanese were not “waiting for them”. They did however respond quickly once the attacking force was detected (due to an inadvertent discharge of a Marine’s weapon).

I know stock submarine footage is hard to come by, but you have lots of nuke boats mixed in with WWII era boats in this one.

Nautilus & Norwhal & Argonaut were all in the same class. All had dual 6” guns. Some of these guns are on display at Groton.

Just as I became confident that Dork Seas was gaining in professional presentation, it does a massive dive into ruining a very poignant story of a hero boat. Why throw completely irrelevant clips of Hyman Rickover and nuclear submarines into the mix. Navy veterans, like myself, can tell the difference most of the time but the target audience has little knowledge of what a WW2 craft vs a modern one.

See that the crews were well integrated -/ only MERIT & ABILITY applied to “Boat” crews . Subs are considered “boats” in the US Navy !!

Argonaut Class, they only made 1, not unusual back in the day to only make 1 or a few of a class. The first boat built of a class name, is the class name when it come to US submarines. There are also variants within a class too, but it is its still part of the same class.

this video is ridiculous, often as not showing grossly inaccurate images of MANY other boats, of other eras; SOMEBODY should vet the video footage. this is unacceptable. GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER!!!! "dark seas" are darker due these idiotic & obviously uncaring blunders, and they disrespect the courage & sacrifice of brave sailors!!
