While Tony is no longer quite so aggressively grouchy about life, he continues to struggle to fill the void left behind by his late wife.

The saddest part of Tony's story is it seems - I think like most of us - we wait until we've lost someone before we become the best version of ourselves. The version we could have been for them.

There is much truth in that statement. After I lost my wife I had a tremendous amount of support from my coworkers. I didn't understand it in the beginning why people helped and stayed so engaged. I remember mentioning to 1 of the directors. That we have a lot of very kind and compassionate people in what is otherwise at the corp level a soul crushing company. He looked at me and said basically "they are like that because they believe that is what you would do for them". So sometimes we don't see it in ourselves because and it take others show us.

@matteoperon3378

I like that idea, but in my opinion I don’t think that he actually lied to the kid, even tho he does not believe in a afterlife, he believes in a different kind of heaven that is life, where you can find real Angels like good people according to the speech of anne about them before that scene.
@AshuriAikawa
@AshuriAikawa Жыл бұрын
In a way I think it's a lie, but I also don't. I think in this moment, due to him being challenged to admit the cruel reality of his words, he would rather believe in heaven as a concept because his view is just too sad. So yes, it was for the kid he said it out loud, but it was also for himself. The kid let him know how upsetting his view was, briefly altering his perception of reality to accept the possibility of heaven. The kid acted as a gateway to accept something he never normally would, even if it's briefly. This is the kind of moment that'd stick with someone for the rest of their life, so I doubt he'd go back to being so against heaven after this moment.

@@salvagemonster3612 Hard to do new takes on the grief caused by the loss of loved ones, as not much has changed for humans who are grieving, except as life spans are longer so they may have more time to do it. Ricky wheeling out the kids in hospice was a kick in the nuts. A cheap shot but it still works. You saw it coming so were probably wearing a cup. I preferred the Kath story arc which essentially says the same thing as the series, which is that life can be sad at times, but it's best not to do it alone, even if it with a pet.

My wife died 17 years ago. When she died our children were 15, 13, and 10. Today they are 32, 30, and 28. There is so much she wasn't here to see, graduations, their careers, a wedding, our first grandchild coming in late August of 2023. I lost my sweet wife Pam in the fall of 2019. I watched this entire series and cried during most episodes because it hit so very close to home. I even watch these clips to simply cry because there is a strange healing power in tears. It's almost as if Ricky Gervais lost his wife in real life because he expresses all the feelings I've had the past 2 years. Oh how I wish my experience were not real but only a tv show. Nonetheless, I truly appreciate this outstanding show. For those that may be interested I do a podcast on grief and loss. It's available from all the major podcast providers. Look for "Love Letters to Pam" - The Jack Church Show. In a weird kind of way doing the show helps me in the healing process just like watching After Life helps as well.

I think what he saw wasn't any different from what he captured only he realised what tony meant by saluting him and by that little nod as well, every time lenny would take a picture he'd do it for the story he'd formally say "smile" Before taking the picture and this time he said smile instinctively when he took the picture but after tonny nodded at him lenny realised that this would be a picture for another story perhaps the final story that tony would be a part of and it'd be his own.

We always hugged and said 'I love you' and saw each other despite distance. When my bother fell ill he stopped talking to me and I kept writing him to tell him that I loved him. Before he died his daughter told me that he would sit reading my letter and crying but still didn't phone. I call my mother every day and see her as often as I can as I live abroad. I was never a fan of Ricky Gervais, but after watching "After Life" I've changed my mind! I laughed, but I cried a lot too. It's such a beautiful story. The ending was a surprise for me, but I got it too... Life is never a neat little package tied with a bow. Thanks for a beautifully written series RG. 🙂😢😊

I don't think i have ever seen another series that made me laugh or cry so much within the same episodes as Afterlife. Ricky Gervais is for me one of the most talented writers, actors and comedians the world has ever or will ever see. Just this short snippet had me blubbing like a baby all over again but i am so grateful for his work as i know i am human.

I remember coming up to an accident in New York one day. People just driving by. I saw a mom holding her little daughter and crying leaning against her car. I blocked the lane with my car and then got out and comforted them as much as I could. I was reassuring and told them that the ambulance was on the way. Once it got close I told her I had to go to make room for it. She grabbed my arm and asked if I was her guardian angel. Took the wind out of the sails for me. I almost lost it. I said I am just someone who cares and you'll be okay. Then I left. Never saw them again.

Absolutely brilliant! In each of every 30-minute episode you will laugh, cry, love, think… One of the best works I’ve seen in many years. Perfect performance of the actors; scenarios, music… just SO touching, and yet, you’ll feel great after each episode. At the end, we should at least we should have learned to look around and see the “angels” we have in our lives and enjoy every single minute with them. Great work and thanks to all the team. Thank you, Mr Gervais!

Comedians are often times some of the best drama actors you can get. There's so many times people are shocked by raw and real performances from actors known mostly for comedy. Robin Williams is another big one that comes to mind.

I totally get this. My wife died in June 2021. It's been well over a year now, and I feel the same way. About the only thing that keeps me from suicide is the four cats (a mother cat and her three kittens) that my wife and I rescued in 2019. Even when she was in the hospital or, later, a nursing home, she would always ask me "how are the kitties doing?" So I have to take care of them now. Other than that, my life's pretty much over. I live like a recluse now... my only contact with others is with store clerks.

This show literally changed my whole perspective about life because of Ricky Gervais, even though im still young and im at my late teens now and i cant bare the fact that when times continually goes faster as i get older and seeing my loved ones are getting also older with grey hair and their bodies are worn out in their primes and cant able to do stuff they want since they're younger. I'm probably gonna change my social circle after this and im stepping out of mg comfort zone that i want to do things i really go after it until its over.

I lost my wonderful husband in 2014. He was 50 years old. He’d had a minor surgery, had a blood clot break free, and three weeks to the day of that surgery, he died. 14 minutes was all it took to crush my life to smithereens. I never got suicidal, but I was indifferent to living, for a short period of time. Until you face an empty house for the first time, or worse yet, your bed, you really cannot know what it’s like. But life waits for no man. You HAVE to go on. You can wish for things to be different, but the sooner you realize this is YOUR new normal, the better. Love your mate, live for today, because tomorrow is not promised to any of us, and talk about EVERYTHING, that way there’s no regrets. The best gift my hubby gave me was the strength to move on, without him, because we can’t live our lives looking back through the rear view mirror.
