The thing I love about melodic minor is that as there are no avoid notes there are plenty of options in terms of playing triad pairs. Also since there are pairs of adjacent major triads, diminished triads and minor triads they can be fairly easy to figure out. Plus the augmented triad is a really easy way to add the essence of the melodic minor sound into any line.

I played A harmonic minor over the D minor B flat dom7 and it worked for me as an improvisational tool. I liked it because the G# is in the melody and the scale. I thought ( maybe incorrectly) as the Dminor is the minor IV chord in A harmonic minor and Bflat is a tri tone sub for E7 this could work. I then went to D melodic minor and D harmonic minor for the II/V. Am I making up my own rules here or simply just wrong?
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen Жыл бұрын
You should of course do what you want, but if you listen to the song then I suspect that you don't hear it as being in the key of A minor, so you are probably going against your ears.

What chords do you use when playing Melodic Minor? is it only a Dominant 7 added#5 chords? I have heard to use the melodic minor by starting on the 5th, so if you're in the key of A minor you play the E Melodic minor. I'm not sure why Jazz composers will use the 5th to start the melodic minor scale over a different root chord.

At one point in the video (2:30) you mention that on a tritone substitution on the fifth of the fifth in key of Dm, then F melodic minor is used. Certainly no argument from me, but where does that come from?
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 3 жыл бұрын
From changing the scale to fitting the chord: Dm from Bb: Bb C D E F G A Bb, Fm melodic from Bb: Bb C D E F G Ab Bb
@artompkins7958

@@JensLarsen Thanks, Jens! after I asked the question, it occurred to me that F melodic minor is also E alt, which is of course what you might expect to play on an Edom7 that’s been substituted with its tritone substitution.

I get it, but Bb7 is not really functioning as a tritone of the dom of the dom. Bb7 is that, in the minor 'key', but that's a real clunky abstract way to think of it and besides the point IMHO. It's function is very clean and basic as a chord 4 that functions in a blues in the relative major F, also as it appears in bars 3 and 4 of the form. The 2 and 4 should always be dominant (or minor) in your mind (lydian/chromatic) and as a Bb dom 7th the note Ab just makes F major into F minor melodic, but it's better to think of the dominant function for Bb in F, and just add the dominant seventh when you need it, relating it back to the major or a blues in F. The inverted way that Bb functions is as a minor with Db, relating it back to an F harmonic major - like Stella plays with F and Bb. The 2 chord is also functioning either minor or dominant, so Cm for Bb, and G7 for Bb. The 2-5 in F.
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen Жыл бұрын
So calling it a subV of V is very clunky and it makes more sense to see it as a IV chord borrowed from the relative major that has been altered to give more of a blues flavor? Somehow I don't think that is really makes any sense. This song is just A-train or Gir From Ipanema in minor, there is no need to make it more complicated than it is with subdominant chords that are justified with blue notes from the relative key.
@MrXeberdee
@MrXeberdee Жыл бұрын
@@JensLarsen A tritone of a dominant of a dominant - that's not clean. Chord 4 is very important, it is the inverted dominant - very clean way to think about it. Bb function in Dm like Abm/Db7 functions in F major.
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen Жыл бұрын
@@MrXeberdee Then call it a tritone of a secondary dominant if you prefer. Could it be that you are not familiar with "the dominant of the dominant" as a concept? (it is practical since that is a very common chord, and you seem to be writing it wrong, so maybe that is what you find confusing) Thinking like that, at least you can relate it to the key of the song without all those weird tangents to other keys that you seem to be making, that doesn't really make any sense to me, and you have to admit that in minor it is pretty common to have progressions like Bb7 A7 Dm. This is just a longer version of that.
@MrXeberdee
@MrXeberdee Жыл бұрын
But I suppose it all depends on if you think about the major and the minor as the same thing like I do, so when I'm playing in Dminor, I'm almost always in F in my head, so Bb is central, and making it a lydian dominant is no biggie.
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen Жыл бұрын
@@MrXeberdee Sure, I tend to go by what I hear. I don't hear F as a root here, so I don't try to think in F when I am playing it.

As a guitar player practicing jazz i sometimes wonder, is it only for me like, who would want to hear it then? People In General dont listen to jazz. I practice other stuff too. Jazz is not an essence of every style of music. I wonder why is Jens only playing this still of music? I see this channel is deedicated to jazz, but theres so many other styles, why be a puritanist? What brothers my is jazz community is often times despising other styles of music. Why is that?
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 3 жыл бұрын
Am I not allowed to make videos on the music that I love to play? And is that because it is not considered popular music? What a strange way to think about it, and pretty negative to be honest. There are channels dedicated to whatever it is you want to check out so I don't have to make those videos. The good thing about that is that you know my videos are about Jazz and other people make videos on other things.

Why not just look for a fusion channel? There are millions of KZfaq channels. Isn't it a little like going to a butch and complain that they are not a baker. Is it more work to type a few searches than making the comment? I really doubt that.
