Getting into comic books can be a very daunting task, especially if the particular character you are interested in has fifty plus years of continuity. As one of the world's most popular superheroes, Spider-Man is getting a lot of attention these days and more and more fans are trying to get into the medium that gave birth to everyone's favorite wall-crawler: comic books. Spider-Man is a character that has almost sixty years of history! How can a new fan realistically gain a solid foundation of Spider-Man continuity without going back and ready hundreds of issues of continuity (not to mention spending exorbitant amounts of money). In this week's episode, we go over the absolute essential Spider-Man stories that fans should read, in order to get a solid foundation of what makes Spidey one of the most popular superheroes of all time! Enjoy!
Addendum: After making this episode, I noticed that I totally forgot to mention Kraven's Last Hunt as one of the essentials. It not only is important but one of the best and I didn't want you all to think that I totally wrote it off. I have linked Kraven's Last Hunt below!

I grew up with 90s Spider-Man so I really only knew Mary Jane. As an adult, I finally got around to reading (and being able to afford) some back issues and graphic novels. The Gwen Stacy story is just as shocking and effective today. I can't imagine being a young reader, reading years of stories and then getting to that issue. It had to be devastating.

I agree! Mark Waid was a kid reading ASM 121 and he described it as his Kennedy assassination moment… for any comic book fan, I’m sure it’s the same

Great topic, Dante. I put "Kraven's Last Hunt" at the top of my personal list. Can't believe you forgot that initially! LOL! You did edit your details to reflect this, though, so good save! I've read a lot of Spidey stories, but none affected me while reading it and beyond as KLH did. To this day, I'm still waiting for a Spidey story to match or come close to it. ASM #33 was great because it captured the essence of who Peter Parker really is, and what makes him the hero he is. Great pick. I wouldn't put the Morbius issues on my personal list, but I understand why you put it on yours. ASM #121 is crucial for sure. No arguments there. Hobgoblin storyline was great, despite being derivative of Green Goblin, and I loved reading it too. While ASM #252 was important, I didn't find the actual story all that compelling. Web of Spidey had no memorable impact on me, other than the tie-in to the KLH storyline. Venom storyline was huge, no question, and has spawned a major character to go along with Spidey to this day. I mean, Venom is a true star on his own, as you stated. Carnage to a lesser degree, but still important as well, if also derivative. I do disagree with both Clone Sagas, not because they weren't important to the character of Spidey, but because I didn't find either saga enjoyable to read. Simple as that. ASM #229-230 are on my list because it was such a cool story for me (these are the Juggernaut issues, for reference). I've always loved Juggernaut, so those issues hold a special place for me. Good pick on Superior, even if it's not Peter Parker. Thanks for another entertaining video and look forward to your next!

Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed! Yeah I can’t believe I forgot Kravens last hunt too lol glad I saved myself ha ha. And yes I can definitely see why the clone saga wouldn’t be on most people’s list ha ha yeah, I know morbius isn’t a big one, but I really like the story lol thanks for watching and commenting as always my friend!

Overall a very good list. I have to agree with you on the Clone Saga. I think too many people just hear the story title and automatically think bad thoughts so it gets dismissed. I do agree with the people who mentioned it, Kraven’s Last Hunt has to be in a list like this. however I don’t agree with you saying ASM is the only title that really matters most for Peter Parker life stories. If you haven’t read the “Death of Jean DeWolffe” with the Sin-Eater storyline in Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man” #107-110 you have absolutely missed out. The Owl vs Doc Ock Gang War storyline in PPTSSM #72-76 with Peter and the Black Cat’s romance beginnings is essential Spidey reading for sure Amazing Spider-Man #284-288 “Gang War” street level Spidey crime and NY adventures at there finest Amazing Spider-Man Annual #21 and the ASM titles leading up to Mary Jane and Peter getting married are simply required because we find out MJ knew all along Peter was Spidey and we found out her family history. Amazing stuff for sure Web of Spider-Man #34. If you never read it you should. It shows why Spider-Man’s indelible spirit makes us love him and his down to each persona in a weird tale of school yard football Lastly I have to ASM #400. “Death of Aunt May” and the issues where she told Peter she has always know something about him but always keep it to herself. Just wonderful stuff. Okay, my rant list is over lol.

Fantastic List! Clone Saga is Definitely important!!!! It's a cautionary tale of how making an interesting idea go on too long- much like Sinners Past/ One More Day are HOW YOU DON'T Handle character writing with no real direction!

Just a note on Amazing Fantasy 15 - There was a great and affordable facsimile/reprint in 2019 that's still affordable ($3.99). There's also the new Mighty Marvel Masterworks graphic novels that collect 1-0 for $14.99.

Nice work, as usual. Regarding reprints of the Spidey origin story in Amazing Fantasy 15, here are four affordable (around $20, give or take) options for acquiring this tale -- which is probably the single most-reprinted Marvel Comics saga... * Origins of Marvel Comics -- This 1974 book by Stan Lee contains the Spidey origin tale plus other early '60s Marvel hero first appearances, along with Stan's comments about the creation of each strip, and recent stories to contrast with the origin tales. Available in TPB (inexpensive) and hardcover (not so much). * Marvel Tales issue 137 -- If you want a floppy, and particularly if you want to see Ditko's original, rejected, cover art for AF 15. * Marvel Comics Presents Fantastic Firsts -- A lesser-known compendium of '60s origin tales, not to be confused with the more costly Marvel Firsts: The 1960s, which covers much of the same territory. Available in budget-priced TPB and fancy hardcover-with-slipcase formats. * Marvel Visionaries: Stan Lee -- An interesting mix of stories authored by Stan that he considered personal favorites. The AF 15 Spidey origin is included but the book is not an origins compendium per se. Available in TPB and hardcover, both are reasonably affordable. (In case you're wondering, the Spidey origin story does NOT appear in the book Marvel Visionaries: Steve Ditko).

Hey Dante, ever thought about covering some of the best Comic Book teamups with other companies? Some goodies could be Superman vs Spiderman, Tarzan vs Predator, Marvel vs DC, Batman/ Spawn, etc.

AF 15 in my opinion is a perfect story. I don't have the original issue, but I have read the story as a reprint so many times. I love it. I also really enjoyed the clone saga...probably because I was too young when it was being published. I read the trades and liked it a lot actually. It did drag on a bit though lol

Spider-Man and Batman are the best: I have loved both characters since childhood. Stan Lee’s entire Spider-Man run was terrific, but WHY did they kill Gwen Stacy? She was a goddess!

If your a Stacey in a Marvel Book, you better get ready to pack your bags for the afterlife. There's no future for you here unless your from an alternate dimensions or a clone.

As poorly received as it was, I think one more day is an important story. You can't have a character like SPider-Man be married for long
@willgrant6458
@willgrant6458 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I think so too. Next they would have had to have him have kids and a superhero can't be that tied down. Him being married made it difficult to come up with stories I think

Hey this is Bob in Connecticut obviously the biggest story in the history of Spider-Man is the death of Gwen Stacy amazing Spider-Man 121. That’s the only book that ever made me cry she was an always will be my favorite female character Harley Quinn is a distant number 2. Well I did pick up amazing Spider-Man 121 9.8 and I have the next issue the death of the green goblin 9.8. Well obviously Gwen Stacy is relevant again because spider Gwen is worth roughly $2000 9.8 edge of spider verse 2 . If you have a copy in 9.6 you will get $800 or more and you have the new spider verse movie coming out in October.

Wow!! Amazing! Yea I have a lower grade copy of 121 and I cherish it! I feel like I own a piece of history. Thanks for commenting Bob! Great to hear from you again!
