I didn't find the elegant break-in (Simons 9th digit), but I heavily used the extra 3x3 regions the symmetry provides. Simon did not need them but they would have made some deductions simpler even for him. The 3x3 region between R3C3 and R5C5 is an extra region containing 1-9, same with 3x3 region between R4C5 and R6C7, also containing 1-9 (just mirror images of box 1 and box 6 within the red and blue symmetry, respectively).

26:44 finish. A very tricky break-in, but a nice flow once inside. Two things I did to assist in my solve were to use the set theory with rows 1-5 and columns 5-9, minus boxes 1 and 9, and to map out the overlapping cells between the two disks. The set I didn't use until later on, to determine the 2-8 pair in box 4, and to check for multiple 7s. Not necessary, clearly, but I was at least able to use it. Excellent puzzle!

I finished in 189 minutes. This was such a hard puzzle. I kept falling into many pit traps and messed up. I was very happy when I noticed that the pair of digits that weren't used in the blue side on row 5 had to be in the red side on row 5. This lead to identical digits being in the red side on row 1, giving r1c1&6&7&8&9 to be identical to the digits in the initial blue side of row 5, including 5. That finally helped me finish after ruling out a crucial 7 in the center box. Great Puzzle!

Very clever. As usual, a break-in involving SET eludes me. I got the seven 5s and the 3, and from the 3 I figured out that the 7 in c4 had to be in b8, fixing the 15-cage as a 6-9 pair, but that was as far as I could get on this one.

Nice design , glad to see there was a nonset method solution. Took a long while. Whats interesting that all the failed branches went to the same sinkhole(contraction): Same 10domino appeared on both sum17 and it Rot-image ...which was a hard contradiction to see. Mystart: 1) same for 5s(and 3) 2) took a while to see but there are sum20blocks that have rot-images. 3) this was the key: using sum15 w sum20block crreates ur 1st 10domino. 4) coloring and sudoku for that 1st 10domino led to some nice deductions to almost complete that domino 5)colorong the other 3 pairs with the rot-image rule. With a deduction from B5 eliminated the other 3 branches.

Actually you don’t need that the circled cells are part of the disc. You can infer that the circles have to be fives without reflecting the cell onto itself. For the upper disc, you can see that the cells outside box 1 have to add to 80, and because the 2 by 2 boxes in the upper left and the lower right corner of disc 1 map to one another everything else has to add up to 40. But the remaining 8 cells map to the 8 cells in box 1 excluding the circled one. Hence, the circled cell is indeed a five. And a similar argument works for the second disc.

I really enjoyed this puzzle. I got the first 8 digits, and some extra pencilmarks (the 3 not being in the red disk in column 2 forces the 7 in column 4 out of the red disk, and similarly in rows 6 and 4 with the blue disk), but needed to watch until you revealed the "Aad trick" before I could continue. Then the extra pencil marking helped, and the rest of the solution flowed nicely.

A bit of very nice logic that Simon missed which could have helped a lot (definite spoilers): The 2 in r2c1 eliminates the pencilmarked 2 in r1c3, which forms a 689 pair in box 1. This gives the 3 in r2c3 right away! It also then gives a 7 in r4c3, forming a 1248 quadruple in box 4, which gave me the idea to go down a different solve path than Simon: the 14 pairs can be colored and this resolves them a lot earlier. Not sure if this was the intended solve path, but with the 1248 quadruples showing up everywhere and the way it played out, it sure felt like it - it was so smooth and elegant. Awesome puzzle!

I was able to start without set by getting a couple 4s and 6s. I looked at the impact of the 3 in the 8-cage. It rules 3 out of column 2 in disk 1, so 7 is ruled out of column 4, so 7 is in the leftmost column of box 8. Thus, the 15-cage is a 69-pair. Using the 3 still, I can put a 7 in the top row of box 4 in the first disk. This means that that the 17-cage needs a 6, and you can start to see where 6s and 4s are possible in the two disks.
@RichSmith77
@RichSmith77 8 ай бұрын
I followed a similar path to get 69 as the 15 cage, and that 6 had to appear in the 17 cage. I also coloured the top cell of the 15 cage (6 or 9) and its compliment (r3c8), and was able to restrict them to two or three places in most boxes. But I couldn't actually get anywhere beyond this, until I saw Simon start thinking about Aad's SET trick. Then I paused the video and could finish the puzzle. But I needed that SET insight.

Not sure whether anyone has said this, but it's much quicker at c24m if you realise that the 180 degree rotation of Box 1 also contains the digits 1-9. Just leaves six green and six black squares, allowing you to fill in 269 and 158 straightaway as there is only one possibility for the 13 'cage'
@erickehr4475
@erickehr4475 8 ай бұрын
One bit of logic which would have simplified the end of the solve is that the central rows/columns of the “disks” contain a 5 and two pairs of numbers which sum to 10. This means that the remaining 4 cells in each must contain two pairs of numbers which sum to 10. This would have got rid a lot of your pencil marks as being impossible.
@gozewson

at 37:11 we have 78 pair in box 2. So the left side of box 2 does not contain 78, and the corresponding rotated rectangle does not contain 23 . This gives you some digits.

I think the two 5's had to be given digits in this, otherwise it's a little dubious whether or not the rules indicate them being there. If indeed the intent was to make the solver immediately realise that circles have to be 5's, then maybe not a lot of solving value would've been lost by just placing them in the grid as given digits, and it would've definitely cleared up some confusion.
@dimitrisdimitriadis4913
@dimitrisdimitriadis4913 8 ай бұрын
The logic for those two 5s completely escaped me. Is it just that 5 is half of 10, and the disc's center doesn't have a pair, so it "should" be half of 10? Because if yes, it seems really dubious indeed
@jim43
@jim43 8 ай бұрын
This also escaped me but looking back I think it does make sense. The rules state that every cell inside the disk is subject to the summing to 10 rule. Since the circles are inside the disk and they would be in the exact same place when the disk is rotated 180 degrees, then the only value that works for that is 5. There's no other digit the circles could be with the wording of those rules
@lasagna312

"For each cell inside the disk" would include the center cell, so I don't think the 5s need to be given

I got stuck very quickly after starting. I did place a couple 5s in the circles, and cornermark other 5s. Surprisingly, I recalled a theorem about 5x5 and 4x4 sections of the grid, and that allowed me to place another 5 and narrow the pencilmarking of 5s. The top-left diskette had either three or one 5, but it couldn't have only one because the bottom-right 4x4 had at least one. Consequently, the top-left had to have three 5s, and the bottom right needed a second 5, with only one available cell to place it in. As for the 17-cage, I narrowed its occupancy down to two possibilities, and here is where I stand stuck. (I colored in a new 13-cage that's diametrically opposite the 17-cage across the circle.) 10:50 Ahah, thanks to Simon's opening, I was able to do a little more, including filling the 8-cage. 16:10 Another hint-adding the totals in a diskette. I could now do a little more. I've now ruled out one of the two remaining possibilities for the 17-cage. (Later) I slowly but surely finished the puzzle. I was surprised at the roping in the middle horizontal band. Also, I just noticed almost-roping in the lower band, with 2, 3, and 4 rotating. 18:50 Use 5x5 and 4x4 instead. The 5x5 add to 125, the 4x4 add to 125 - 45 = 80. Then subtract off block 9's total to get the sum in the nine cells surrounding the block -- the sum is 35. You have the cages and placed digits, which allow one to place a 2 in R6C9. 41:20 Place 89 in R3C1, then place 3 in block 1 and its counterpart 7.

Likewise. In my case, I think it's just a matter of noticing basic stuff because that's the level I'm at. The set theory stuff I understand how it works, but little idea how to "pick" it to acquire useful information. No doubt, when I do get a better grasp of that, I'll be missing things like that 3 in box 1, too. 🙂 I have noticed Simon VERY often overlooks digits in coloured squares. Near the very end of the puzzle, the 5 in the green seems pretty obvious to me, but Simon "wonders" about the 5, and looks to the pencil marks instead.

I couldn't understand the rules. A central circle adds to itself - I thought meant instead of adding to 10 by itself, e.g., 1 adds to 1. Which is no information at all. Otherwise, I was immediately thinking 5.

I think you got side tracked by set theory. That caused you to color a bunch of cells that you never uncolored. I think this caused you to completely miss the intersection of the two 5x5 boxes. You could use that to eliminate/match the three intersected cells with their respective rotations. You didn’t need to do that, I guess, but I think it would have gone faster had you caught that.

i feel the initial placing of 5 was a leap as 5s from box1 can rotate to box 4

I think the point was more that when you do a 180 rotation, the two circle cells stay at the exact same spot. Since they are also in the disk, they must abide by the 10 sum rule. 5 is the only digit that when added to itself gives you 10

If you dont put a 5 in the circle, you need to put it out the circle and another one on the opposite position because of the rotation make 10 rule. Sudoku will make that impossible. At one point there will be 2 fives in a column or box

I'm not sure I follow. When you rotate a cell 180⁰, it doesn't always end up in the same row or column. For example, the 5s in r2c5 and r5c1 don't conflict. I don't see why, at the start, rotation would prevent a 5 in r2c2, say, and it's rotation in r4c4. You need the fact that the circles rotate onto themselves and therefore must be 5 to obey the summing to 10 rule.
