How's it bruddha. I was commercial fishing on the Big isle from the late 70's till 93'. I had the 9th Force 30 out of the mold, custom built to my specs to be my dream boat! I was full time commercial fishing and I usually went out for 4-5 days and nights at a time so I could get a good catch. I used to fish this area all the time, usually in howling trades and really rough water!! Just wanted to lykn, that area of coastline is where I encountered the biggest tiger sharks in my life!!! I had a school of tiger sharks, about 15 of them eat a huge marlin in the 800-900 lb.size one night at 3 o'clock in the morning!! The marlin was too big for my friend and I to get in the boat even with a doulble block and tackle! It was tied off the side of my boat, and we were at anchor near there. It was pitch black, the night of the new moon. The tigers were all in the 10-12 ft. Size with some 15 foot monsters! Never forget that night!! Afrer awhile, first one, then a second absolute behemoth sized tiger shark came in. Both swam right up to the transom of my boat and stopped with the front of thier head inches off my transom, illuminated by my transom light. I could reach down and touch thier heads!! These were some of the biggest tigers I ever saw, bigger than the marine biologists believe they get!!! They both were about the same size, I could hardly believe it when I realized there were 2 tigers that big at once!! This is so rare!!!! I could easily gauge how big they were comparing them to my boat. The heads were so massive that they went from the corner pole holder to the center one. My Force 30 had a 10 ft. beam. So, these tigers heads were 5 ft. wide across the top of thier heads!!!!!!! Mark out 5 feet and look at it and then imagine a tiger shark with a head that wide???!!!! It was mind blowing!! Thier mouths were bigger than the opening of a 55 gallon drum!!!! A lot bigger!! I hesitate to say how long these two tiger sharks were, but when they each submerged under the water and swam under my boat from my transom directly to the bow, I told my friend to quickly but carefully go up to the bow and told him I was going to yell out when the sharks tail was just equal with the transom and to see where the head was? Suffice to say, the head was right at the front of the bow's waterline!!!!!... In many many years commercial fishing I saw 2 other tiger sharks approximately the same size. I got a really good look at them to!!! I have been scuba and free dive spear fishing most of my life in the Hawaiian islands! Even if you have a power head, if a big tiger really wants you, it's like a big great white... your basically sh#t out of luck!!!! When you palu, it's just going to be risking tax collection! But if one of those prehistoric monsters comes and it wants you....... That area, has a place where there are ancient Hawaiian petroglyphs near shore that depict honu or green sea turtles. That's one of the tiger sharks favorite foods!!!!! That area has had huge tiger sharks coming in and feeding on honu for eons!!!!!! And, there are a lot of honu in that area, like it's famous for them coming out of the ocan up on the land and spawning there and laying thier eggs!!!! Yeah, I know that area so well!!! Stoked you saw a whale shark!! Probably the highlight of my life on the ocean, was off the Big isle where I got in the water with a full size 40 ft. Whale shark and it let me hold onto it's dorsal fin and ride around with it!!!!!! Felt like I was walking about 10 feet off the ground for several weeks after that!!!!! Aloha D.L.

Yeah I used to go freedive spearfishing alone all the time. You know, its really super dangerous though. I loved it, and i used to do 8-9 hrs in the water!! It was better when I got a scupper pro ocean kayak then I could keep all my fish out of the water in my insulated fish bag on ice!!! No blood in the water then and the fish are cherry!!!! I admit, I absolutely loved the challenge of diving alone! I used to commercial fish on my Force 30 alone all the time for over 20 years!! I loved catching huge gorilla ahi and especially big donkeys, or 500 + lb marlin by myself was the ultimate challenge and accomplishment. It is really difficult and you have to really know what your doing to get quadruple big gorrila ahi strikes trolling and then catch them all by yourself!! But big "donkeys"... 500+ lb. Marlin by yourself is the ultimate challenge!!! Again I loved it, but it's extremely dangerous!!! Just when you're doing deep freedives down to that 90-100 ft depth, it's so dangerous!!! There's always the risk, especially if your spearing really big ulua, like in the 60-100 lb range, you can get wrapped up in your gear or have your line tangle you up to the reef and then the leading cause of losing divers is shallow water black out!!!! If you have a buddy diving with you, and he can dive as deep as you, then he can go get you if you black out and have a seizure at 10 ft and then sink!!! I finally made myself stop doing deep drops like down to 90-100ft to ulua hales by myself!! I never got my 100 pounder, broke off 4 that were that big!! But I did get a good amount of 80 and 90 lb uluas a few just short of the magic 100 lb mark!. Yeah whale sharks are the ultimate!!! Humpbacks too!!! Be safe D.L.
