That is very impressive for a lightweight meal. Lots of morale boosting stuff, along with the obligatory four kilograms of sugar in a Russian MRE haha.

agreed, that apple butter and mashed potatoes are tops !!!!!! I used a couple packets of the potatoes in a soup I made for a large group camp, worked out great !!!

For anyone who's never had a Russian ration, trust and believe it, that the apple butter, (povidlo) is worth every penny! Seeing this reminds me that I need to open up my winter IRP.

Borscht is a Slavic-type peasant soup featuring vegetables, meat, and beats (for the color). Every household has it's own variation, but typically cabbage, carrots, potatoes, onions and garlic form the vegetable component. Pork, or chicken in one form or another usually forms the meat component. Ukrainians and Poles try to use three types of meat/meat products, and often add fatback or bacon. Beef, lamb, goat, wild meat, turkey, goose/duck, are less commonly used. Grain or pasta may also be added, or dumplings. Seasoning is usually basic: salt, pepper, and a bay leaf or two. Typically, the soup is on the substantial side, with discrete pieces of ingredients rather than blended into an even texture. Serve with a dollop of sour cream and dill (added by the diners to taste), with a slice of dark rye bread. Borscht is better the second day. The tomato sauce is not traditional in any way I'm aware of. I would probably have added it to the borscht, but that's a guess.

@@Sticky745 Freeze Dried saves weight as water weighs about 1 Lb a Pint. I have Powdered Mash at home similar to that, I always use Salt and Pepper when cooking and my Mash I will sometimes add Dried Milk to it. Like the one you made it always looks to watery after you add the water but 5 minutes later it is looking good. When I was in the British Army I always took Salt and Pepper and Curry Powder with me. And some Brown and Red Sauce, At home after I have used some I sometimes top the bottle up with some Balsamic Vinegar I guess a Dark Soy Sauce would be very similar/

Nice relaxing enjoyable review. I watched this yesterday but couldn't comment for some reason. Over all it looks pretty good. Can't beat the apple butter, or jam. The ketchup looking stuff I would have done the samething with it. The Russian chocolate is great. Best for last, apple butter, from Russia. Excellent job buddy 👍

Nice review. This is a very "wet" ration. How did that Gorky chocolate compare to the Officer's chocolate you usually get in Russian military rations? Seeing as there is really nothing solid in that borshch- such as pieces of meat, cabbage, carrot, or onion- I would have used less water to rehydrate the potato and tossed that into the borshch.

@@jcsopinion3899 Time it right, and you can usually get a decent price on Amazon.....In my experience, the actual Russian army ones, (the box with the star on it) is of better quality than the civi branded ones.....the mains will be good, and some of the components can take some getting used to (ie. Ikra, the veg caviar) but they shouldn't disappoint.
