This is the best and most informative paradise gourami video I have seen. Let me emphasize, these are very robust fish. I was first introduced to them as child when my father kept them. In law school I kept four in horrible conditions. Bare 5 gallon tank, no aeration or filter, infrequent water changes. I was kind of busy. They thrived. The summer after law school, I put them in my father's fish pond and they grew into beautiful monsters and lived another 3 years. I now live in Arizona. About 10 years ago I performed an experiment. I had read about how in the 1800's when they were imported to England they were often kept in unheated greenhouse ponds that froze over. So, one spring I put 5 in a 20 gallon long on my covered patio that received no direct sun. By fall I had 10. I left the tank outside for the AZ winter and by the next spring had lost one. I then put them in a 100 gallon pond, again with no direct sunlight. They thrived, including one cold AZ winter when I would go out to the pond in the morning and break the ice.By the third year in the pond there were more than 100 fish who, when I fed them, would hit the surface like trout and came out of the water. Unfortunatly, the experiment ended that fall when the racoons discovered them and had an Octoberfest party. I don't know who brought the beer. I recently picked up another group, all males that fight like dogs. So separate tanks for these guys. These are very beautiful and robust fish.

I used to own a male paradice fish when I was a teen. I loved him even though he was a real nasty one. He was always the most healthy and active fish, and the beautiful colors was just a happy plus. I actually used to go feed him tadpoles, and now I understand why it came so naturally to him to eat those. I didn't know where these fish came from.

I just got one today. He's the only one in the tank for now. You're 💯 correct. He's totally checking out the whole tank, and it looks like he's giving it his approval 😂 UPDATE: Mine was still pretty young when I posted this. After revisiting this video I'm pretty sure I have a female. One of the best fish I've ever owned. I have her in a 10 gallon with (6) zebra danios (2) patties (3) panda cory's (1) sword tail. I keep the water at 71 degrees, with a hang on the back filter. Everyone is happy and healthy. Doing a 20 gallon now. The main fish is going to be a Paradise fish.

This is a great video, paradise fish seem to be a little overlooked. It's actually pretty interesting that they've been in the pet trade for so long, since being imported to France in 1869!

Thank you for this informative video! Ive kept a female Paradise fish for several years now. She has shared a home with Dwarf Gourami and some minnows, although she's currently in an unheated tank with no filter by herself. I still haven't found a male Paradise fish to put in with her. I won't give up looking though! Yes! These are very undemanding, hardy, intelligent and beautiful fish! Oh! And bossy too of course!

Thanks, yes they have such great personalities. Be sure to have plenty of plants if you get your male because normally if the male is breeding, he's beating the female but with enough plants she can avoid him

Thank you. This was super useful. I've been thinking about getting paradise fish for a few years now and currently have an empty aquarium. Been quite difficult finding information on them as they don't seem to be very popular for some reason. I'm definitely going to ask my local Maidenhead aquatics if they can order some in for me.

Some strains of paradise gourami can overwinter under ice, it depends on how much you cull and choose fish that are hardy.

Actually These breed is first aquarium fish. Fish in this vid are actuallyblue variation of paradise gourami. Original one tends to have more brownish color. They are also live in Japan(as introduced species), and roundtail one(m.ocellatus) lives in Korea, China and Japan (also introduced). Actually paradise gourami is well known as outside basin(with lotus) fish in okinawa. As Korean, temperature goes under 14f on coldest day in winter at m.ocellatus habitat near my house. There are some ice on surfaces, but roundtail paradise still lives under there.(went half hibernation).

Probably one of my all time freshwater fish to keep, super easy and can be beautiful to look at. Kept mine in a semi black water set up low tech. The babies pretty much grew up on stuff on the plants such as Marimo Balls. Super fun fish if you're just starting out.

What I noticed and this is actually a good thing is that the paradise gourami seems to feed at all levels even off the bottom. Many aquarium fish will only feed and stay in a particular level. My Australian rainbow fish only stays in the mid-range of the aquarium which means any Fallen food will just end up sitting on the bottom and contributing to a higher ammonia level which means I have to keep on getting the siphon out.

This is the best video I have found on paradise fish. Got one recently. Sold to me as a male. But looking at this think it's probably more likely female. Not that it matters much as I got it to keep down my guppy population. So far it has almost demolished my neocaridina shrimpletts but I'm sure when it gets bigger will start on the ever growing guppy population. It always comes out to say hello when I'm in the room so I expect that it is of high intelligence.

These are very nice fish, and I agree with some comments that they are underrated. I have kept these ones and the black paradise fish. Unfortunately some are so "overbreeded" that they have lost their colors. If I get hold of some that are wild caught or bred from wildcaught fish, I will likely go for them again. Magnificent colors and fins! The black species seems to be more of a tropical fish, not as hardy as these. There is also a Chinese paradise fish, which really needs a period of cold - kept in a normal tank temperature all year around, they will die. I agree to that they are intraspecies agressive, so keep one or "many". They also get fairly big, the males can reach three inches. If I remember correctly, these fish where also among the first fish kept in aquariums at all.

@williamblansett5786

Well there is nothing like success, so it is not a criticism from me to point out there are other fish you could in the tank as well. If there was a heavily planted tank with some slate-like rocks with driftwood and 3 inches of small pebble gravel on the bottom of the tank, this could be used to have one male and several females Paradise Gourmai with White Clouds. Also the Dojo and other weather fish would be able in hide under the gravel if necessary. Alternately with the Dojo and some dwarf subtropical water species of Snakehead fish (where legally allowed) can be keep Rocky Kruper (Sandelia bansii) 26 cm 130 g and Cape Kruper (Sandelia capensis) 25 cm 200 g with a ledge for the Krupers to escape the water. All the species should be raised together, well fed and reach 25 cm. Actually the Dwarf snakehead fish would probably be a victim as they have soft rays unlike the Krupers with spines for rays in their fins. Because the rarity of this fish of the Sandelia species, breeding it should be profitable.
