I'm just starting to play with a pick as I want to play U2's Street With No Name. So I'll have to get up to speed, literally! :)

I started off playing bass with a pick as I was already used to using one with a guitar. Not sure I agree with upstrokes being a weaker sound. I did alternate picking from the start. Just as for fast fingers there are some important mechanics that often aren't shared by tutors. Don't try to replicate the rest stroke as recommended (not by me) for finger playing and don't leave more than 4 mm of plectrum uncovered by fingers. If you have got used to anchoring your thumb on the pickup, you may also be at a disadvantage and might benefit doing fingers without the pickup anchor.
