The Rome you're thinking of- Trajan, Julius Caesar, Hadrian, all the greatest hits- would have and did regularly fold the Germanic tribes like laundry. That's why they did it the smart way and just infiltrated Rome's military structure as auxilia and mercenaries. If you can't beat em, join em. As for the rest of that list, if you study medieval Europe other than the North Sea from 800-1000, you see that while the Vikings were great warriors and explorers, they got outpaced by the Knights of mainland Europe in equipment, training, and expansion. There's a reason the "Viking age" was an age, and not the entirety of medieval history.
