There have been many important and influential First Ladies in American history, from Dolly Madison and Eleanor Roosevelt to Betty Ford and Michelle Obama. But as famous as they are for all they accomplished, none of them wielded the power held by a First Lady you probably have never heard of: Edith Wilson.
Unusual from the start after the 28th president, Woodrow Wilson, wooed and married her while he was already in the White House, Edith Wilson allegedly became the de facto president herself after President Wilson suffered a debilitating stroke in 1919. For the rest of his term, Edith Wilson secretly ran the nation. So who exactly was she? Here's a look at the most powerful First Lady in American history.

She was definitely the first bad ass girl of gaining power. Much respect

No respect at all. She took power that wasn't her's to wield. This should never be something the U.S. should look back at with pride. It would be interesting to learn whether she was as racist as her husband who brought the film Birth of a Nation to be played at the White House

I learned she didn't support women's rights. That is a cause that directly affects her, which makes her a hypocrite.

I know that you say Edith Wilson was a great first lady. I agree, but my favorite first lady. Is Eleanor Roosevelt. She was amazing to me! She was a very strong lady and dud even more for the USA.

Eleanor Roosevelt is my favorite, too. As the niece of Theodore Roosevelt, both descendants of the Bulloch family. She came up in Washington political circles, and despite being a wealthy, well-connected socialite, her deep commitment to social justice for the underprivileged cannot be overlooked. Roosevelt could've lived a quiet, private life of a Washington doyenne who partied throughout Washington and New York, but she didn't, so I'm still impressed by her humanitarian and philanthropic efforts.

Wilso comes in at the bottom as President. It will very hard for any Prsident to replace him at the bottom. His policies and ideas play out to be awful.

Eleanor Roosevelt did more good than any other First Lady by advocating for black people, the poor & education. She helped FDR - already very empathetic & liberal - stay true to important issues he was getting pressure from Republicans & even some Democrats for being too 'socialist'. Eleanor traveled the country alone, a strong advocate for all women's rights far outdoing Mrs. Wilson or any other First Lady since!

Crazy to know but I’m a documented direct descendant of Edith Wilson. Hello from the family. And trust me. The women in my family act just like her. They uphold power and they chase us down for disrespecting their authority. But the blood is in us boys also and they know that. So it’s mutual authority. And things get messy. Hello from the bloodline😊
