Flight simulation has become a huge part of aviation training over the last 10 years. The trend just keeps accelerating as technology brings us better flight simulators and more realism.
I was a "flight sim baby", having grown up playing simulation games, and even taking it quite serious at times. But over the years I found that I wasn't flying airplanes for real, and was rather spending too much time with the simulators.
Jump ahead several years, I then became a flight instructor and simulation took on an entirely different role. There's plenty of great options out there available for a flight school, but not all of them are certified. At this time it's not my intention to get a certified flight simulator, but I certainly want to make sure that I have something my students can use.
That's where John and his company StayLevelAvionix comes in. While there are a lot of great third party peripherals like yokes, throttle quadrants, GPS devices and so on. His panel brings all of these things into one package, and looks very processional.
You'll see part of the production process of the flight sim panel, in addition to our talking about the setup, how it's useful as a training tool from a CFI's perspective, and more.

The most critical and important phase of any CAT 1 ILS is the LAST 200 feet. Aircraft have continued at DH on GS, only to land short. Remember, you don't have to have the runway in sight to continue at DH. The callout to yourself at DH with only the approach lights in sight is "continue". Not "land". Did you know there is another "DH" at 100 feet above the TDZE? You need the red terminating or red side row lights in sight to continue. If the airport doesn't have the red lights, you need to have the runway in sight at 100 TDZE. So...teach yourself to go back and forth between visual outside and the instruments below 200 feet. Outside, inside, outside, inside, etc. This will keep you on glideslope to the runway (notice how you went below GS after DH on your approach? Back and forth to the instruments would have prevented this) and, just as important, you won't have to waste precious seconds transitioning from visual back to the gauges. By going back and forth, your brain is already there. A wind gust blew snow to zero vis when I was below 100 feet on an ILS once, and my missed approach was uneventful because I was already on the gauges. Use this technique on all of your approaches. Especially at minimums. Circling at minimums is strictly a visual maneuver. But, constantly monitoring your altitude, AS, bank, etc, makes a possibmiss on a circle so much easier. Going IMC and having to reorient back to instruments creates a delay similar to recovering from unusual attitudes. It takes a few seconds. Just a tip. FWIW..

Nice build ...I built my first cockpit(plywood duct tape and glue and pvc pipe)... over 40 years ago I had an Atari II or Comadore 64 (floppy disk).computer Flight Simulator II.....it was funky ...but it helped me to get my pilots licence!!!... I never looked back......

Just happened to see this video. Great job. During lockdown here I continue to train using Skype screen sharing. Great to see distance training and affordable home simulation being promoted. HARDWARE COMPARISON - I use a 60" LED TV and similar gear. Gives the full Cessna 6 pack panel on screen and LIFE SIZE to boot. Except... I invested in a YOKO yoke from Virtual Fly and MFG rudders. My CFI/CFII rated realism at 8+ out of 10, discounted only because no G forces. Can't do better. I also hang a TrackIR 5 send/receive detector on my big screen using dental floss, high enough for zero visual interference in flight. In one lesson, where I became task saturated, caused me to break out in a sweat and I was not breathing. Needed a 15 minute break after landing to recover. I have AirManager on a separate touch screen just at my right side. So I have 2 VOR's / ADF / COM/NAV x 2 / DME and the Knobster device for input. So my AirManager matches the X-Plane C172 very closely. Last thought... get the Desktop Aviation Flap Switch!

This is such a nice panel it's FRUSTRATING (because I don't have it.) I've spent a lot of time researching what components get you the best bang for the buck and I believe this panel has nailed it in every instance, except 2 minor ones. Minor in cost, but not minor in improvement, that is. So, NOT in the spirit of chasing perfection, because that's a never ending fools errand... BUT... in the interest of creating as realistic experience as possible to flying a real airplane; I believe there are 2 upgrades you could make that would make the most dramatic increase in realism for a smallish cost. CHANGE 1: Replace the Saitek Cessna yoke with the Honeycomb yoke. Every review I've seen suggests that the Honeycomb scores '7' or '8' for realism (compared to the Redbird or Yoko, etc), with a '3' price-point. CHANGE 2: Replace the iPad with the following combination: touchscreen monitor ($200 or less), Knobster ($100ish), and drive the monitor with a laptop running Air Manager ($65). I'll assume you have a laptop available and don't need to buy one. The Air Manager program allows you to integrate the Knobster with XPlane. Unfortunately, there is an iOS version of Air Manager, but it can NOT control the Knobster. the Knobster allows you to have an actual PHYSICAL knob (inner & outer controls, like on a Garmin 530) for literally every single control that has such a button. For example, want to change your heading bug? Tap that control on the screen, but then actually make the change with Knobster. The tactile difference isn't just more accurate, it's more like the real thing so that the coordination between brain, eye, and hand, remain as close to the real thing as possible. Just my 2 cents. I know costs are very subjective, but a list of the components you put together for your sim package, with just nominal costs would really help start the planning process for myself, and perhaps others. I think of doing something like this, but then think of the cost in terms of actual flying hours "lost out on" and hesitate to move forward. Looking forward to more videos!

That's a beautiful setup! Now do it some justice--throw out that rickety card table and build a nice, solid wood desk/table/frame to mount it on. I would find it very distracting that the table is wobbling as you are using the flight controls (unless you're going for simulated turbulence).

Airfoil Labs 172sp for x-plane is a very nice trainer for IFR. Does all IFR approaches on Pilotedge. Only has a GNS 430, but most trainers only have 430. If you can do 430 you can do 530. The autopilot in AFL is great compared to others. Realistic KAP 140 and also audio panel B/K something.

I once worked for a company that wanted to simulate a Lear Jet. They had taken pictures of the inside of a Lear Jet cockpit and reproduced it out of wood with a cut out for each instrument. Then they lined up all the instruments on one large TV screen with the cutouts of wood and you could only see one indicator through its cutout. A cheap way of making a Lear Jet simulator.

Hi Chris, Hope you are well. Always have appreciated your insights, all the way back from the audio podcast days. Just a thought, as I’m also a simmer with my PPL in Oz; How are you doing with the height of your monitor? You may have found that you get a sore neck after a while. If so, you may find that if you lower it, you will experience a little more comfort mate. It seems like you have the room go lower in on the wall behind the panel. I have a honeycomb setup and use trackIR. That's pretty realistic. The only thing it can't simulate well is wind effects during taxi and felt inputs from control surfaces

You should teach to keep a hand on the throttle and the other on the wheel. Sim or real thing it's best to stick to good habits. Even on airliners, one hand on the power and the other on the wheel or control stick. Great training aid.

Chris is super awesome! I'm a long time fan and customer back when he was doing AOA for flight sim and PMDG. I see he's using X-plane in this video. Chris if you read this, what do you think of the A2A simulation products? In my opinion, they are some of the best GA aircraft for P3D. Even the Cessna 172 is amazing. Amazing setup, I just bought a 3rd party semi pro avionics system (project magenta) because I have a B777 fetish. ;) I see you have a real cessna yoke. Do you know what kind of sensors it uses? I have redbird gear and it's better than the plastic stuff but eehhh, it can be flaky.

jtmuzix I switched to XPlane because it’s nice right out of the box. Got really tired of setting up hundreds of GBs of downloads and whatnot. So this is working great. The yoke I have is from Logitech and done in partnership with Cessna.

Daedur Heru Arlond - iPad on the left is running ForeFlight and the iPad built into the custom SLAVX Panel is displaying the 6-pack instruments via RemoteFlight Cockpit HD...your English is great 👍

It's quite possible to do this for less than a few hundred dollars. There are many tutorials online for building home made sims. Just do a quick search and see for yourself. Flight Sims should be obtainable for the everyday enthusiast. It's already unfair that they make flying unaffordable, the least they could do is allow the average person to experience a simulation of flight.

Definitely a great immersion style of training perhaps 1 on 1 with instructor in a room at FBO etc, but If I might add.... If you are a youtuber this style of sim does not show flight deck instruments up close (other than different external camera views, PITA to edit) which seems to defeat the purpose of youtube training or video training. I feel the same about VR for youtubers as well. It is very hard and almost nauseating to watch VR flight sim training on youtube. Too much head movement. What is your take? Personally, I am not sure how important "location" of instruments externally is, if you can see them on the screen, These things are mandatory, external GNS430/530 and 1 external nav com2, and external autopilot. Throttles Cessna 182 style. Good rudders, I use TPR thrustmaster (great). I love the trim wheel. How accurate is it with no feel in yoke? Brunner has force feed back yoke $1500. Twisting for frequencies is PITA with mouse or hotkey. It is a matter of taste I guess. I youtube and you are real world instructor so definitely this is better for you. Good Luck!

Flying Dutchman - Sweet comment, totally accurate too. Details are...Windows 10 64-bit w/ X-Plane 11 and the gauges are run on an iPad Pro using RemoteFlight Cockpit HD. Garmin GNS530 unit is manufactured by RealSimGear and everything integrated with a custom SLAVX panel. Stay Level 🤙

One thought I have to share about what you said shooting the approach as you were landing: The guy who taught me to fly was a field artillery spotter in WWII, he flew the army's version of the J3, and the Cessna L4, he was one hell of a stick and rudder man and when he died I think he had something like 45,000 hours. I will also note that he did not have as many landings as he did takeoffs, he put a few planes down the hard way over the years. From that experience something he always beat into my head was always always always pretending you don't have a lot of runway, even if you do! We would go over to LVM and do touch and go's and at first I was shooting for the end of the runway, then trying to put her down on the number, and finally he had me shooting to set the main gear down on the cross bar of the 4. His thinking about it was that if you get good at putting the plane down in exactly the spot of your choosing instead of just greasing it in down the runway, when the day comes that you are putting her down somewhere that you had not planned on you will be in control of the aircraft and thus more likely to make your mark and walk away, possibly even saving your aircraft. Along with this when we were flying, he would constantly quiz me asking where I would put the plane down if we were engine out that second, if I couldn't give him an answer he would make me find several places. That is my .02 on the subject! Happy flying, that sim is going to be a whole lot of fun! P.S. and by the way, I cannot wait to see the new FS from Microsoft!

It connects with that app real easy on the same network. You have to put a little program on the computer and you’re all set.

if you use auto pilot on a long flight do you gain altitude because it keeps you level or does it constantly push forward on the stick to compensate for the curvature?

It keeps your altitude if you select alt mode. If selected vs mode, you will be able to control the aircrafts pitch with up and down buttons.

Track IR makes me turn my head and look at monitor out corner of eye, mainly because I am a pirate with patch over one eye. Never did like it much. Screen wobbles with my head too much. Be sure to try it before you buy it. Great product, just didn't work for me and youtube training videos. In one monitor station (mostly mandatory for youtube) I prefer quick look views via hotkeys in X-plane. Same with VR. Some people get sick with VR if FPS too low. I would definitely try VR at trade show first.

I am a 200+ hour VFR private pilot, i am getting interested in building my own simulator just to practice on. a couple questions, 1, i see you use X flight software. it doesn't seem to support that many small aircraft. what other simulators would you recommend? which are compatible with a DIY setup? how did you incorporate foreflight? i use that myself but want to learn to get better without the added workload of actual flight (or time and money involved with actual flight) money is not a big problem for me. what would be an easy path to a decent panel to build a single engine setup with displays that can show steam or glass avionics?

Well- to run basic VR like Ocolus Rift or HTC Vive, you need at least NVidia GTX 1070 or better, I7 or better and 16GB RAM .In my opinion,these are minimum PC specs to run VR properly.If you want to use better and more expensive VR ,than PC specs has to go higher.RTX 2080 as minimum. As an example...I have 1 year old gaming laptop HP Omen 17 with GTX 1070 and I can not run basic Ocolus Rift to the full resolution in Xplane11,but still it is hard to go back to 27" monitor even with TrackIR. I am using saitek yoke,trim wheel,throttle and rudder pedals. All that is connected to laptop via two Anker 3.0 USB hubs.

Also -USB 3.0 hubs have to be powered externaly due to high power demand from VR head set ,yoke and other controls....

I agree with Steve from FlightChops. It was a great video. The panel is beautiful. If I can make one suggestion for your yoke, I would add a Leo Bodnar BU0836A into it and route your pitch and roll potentiometers to that board. That will get rid of the dead zone you were fighting. I have an old Saitek yoke that I did that to (I also moved all the buttons over because the original control board kept having problems), and the dead zones went away.
