For those wanting the full context: All of Odin's Ravens from GoW 2018 and from Ragnarok (53 in 2018 (you only need 51, but there's 1 extra raven in Konunsguard and 1 extra in the river pass area) and 48 in Ragnarok (so 101 ravens in total)) are the souls of dead human children, who, for one reason or another were sacrificed by their own parents to Odin or to honor Odin, and each were killed by being hung. These souls were then gathered up by the Raven Keeper at Odin's command, and their souls twisted and bound into servitude and to be his eyes and ears across 8 of the 9 realms. In addition to having hung himself at the Well of Urd and wandered the realms as a spirit for knowledge, the 101 children being hung as sacrifices to him is the other main reason why he's sometimes referred to as Lord of The Hanged.

I always got the sense that in the Norse Saga Kratos never truly hated any of his foes. He would fight them to protect his son and his friends but if they had merely turned away and not sought him out he wouldn't hunt them down. That he was no longer the man that sought destruction. ...except when he learned of the Raven Keeper. Then, and only then, did the Kratos of Greece and the Kratos of Midgard merge into one, both halves of him united in hunting down and slaying that being.

Gaia: After the destruction of Greece, Kratos, the man known as the Ghost of Sparta, buried his past, buried his rage and sought control over it, to be the better man. No longer would he be a slave to fury. Not even when his exile was discovered by Odin did Kratos surrender to the old ways. He hated no enemy he fought in his quest. Magni and Modi, he pitied. Baldur, he felt regret for this reflection of his past. Only Odin would he hate...until he discovered the origin of the Ravens. For one so bound to the duty of fatherhood, Kratos of Midgard looked within himself to see that the Ghost of Sparta was reborn...but his fury and hate would be turned not to self-serving vengeance, but justice for those this Raven Keeper had wronged so dearly...

They may never reach the afterlife they where meant to, but I think they will be ok as they are, united in the comfort of each other and in what Kratos does for them. A short reminder Kratos back when Calliope Kratos firstborn child was born she was sick and fragile due to Ares releasing a plague and according to Spata tradition she must be thrown into the cliff because she was born weak and therefore unfit to live. Kratos despite being a Spartan straight up refused to follow tradition and decides to search for Ambrosia aka the God medicine. And remember Kratos is a very proud Spartan and Ambrosia is said to be able to give one strength and immortality many have tried search for it and failed and Kratos was the one found it and he choose to give it to his daughter and not for himself.

So if I sacrifice you to a god and his servant collect your soul, to reshape it for their own use and dooms you to suffer forever. It's not stolen? @mithiwithi

The idea that children are the property of their parents is a very common belief (and most likely a prevailing belief in the Nine Realms as they exist in the game), but one I find personally repugnant in the extreme. The children themselves were the rightful owners of their souls, and they were indeed stolen from them - and it's all the more horrific that their own parents colluded in that theft.

@@_Tomonremember Odin himself said to Kratos "have you ever been worshipped, had people pray and love you!" Odin had a great influence over people that he had Heimdall believe everything Odin did was good So imagine how normal Midgard folk would think with their belief in Odin, also parents killing their children isn't exclusive to Odins Raven anyway, in many movies and cultures parents would sacrifice their children Heck it happened in Greece And the humorous line people use (paraphrasing here) "I offer my first born!" is part of an infamous Egyptian law a king/pharaoh once demanded Lesser versions of sacrifice is the origins of weddings, parents would offer their daughters to noble houses to gain favour for land, crops and general resource, the daughters would be the trade value thus the daughter was used as a sacrifice by their families and the newly wed daughter would be used by noble houses to produce an heir (like the job of the Raven keeper, turning a soul into a tool for someone else)

I think the story of the ravens is much darker. They mention swinging like the all father by their parents' hands. Odin hung himself from a tree and stabbed himself with a spear. In all probabilities their parents were insanely devout to Odin or in despair from Ragnarok starting. Considering the ravens existed before Ragnarok I would sadly say the former. I can't decide who were greater monsters, Odin and the Raven Keeper or the parents who sent their children to those monsters.

I do not know about that... Yes, you must be a pretty big piece of sh*t to sacrifice your child/children to anything/anyone, much less by hanging them on tree... (But religious zealots are rarely driven by anything other than their own agenda...). But if not for Odin, those children's essence would live forever in afterlife as it was supposed to be. Odin could easily just let them be, let their souls to where they would naturally go after their deaths... Instead he took those souls, the very essence of those kids, handed it to the sadistic, maniacal b*tch, who was literally twisting and corrupting them till they become perverted, till they were irrevocably changed AND on top of them, she bound them to the servitude forever(or at least for as long as Odin or sadistic b*tch is still allive). What parents did was horrifying, but those were just a mortals, who were tricked by Odin's charade AND i suspect that most of those parents were desperate enough to sell one of their kids to Odin in exchange for means of survival for them and rest of their families. They were tricked and forced. But Odin knew the score. He willingly and, by his own choice, destroyed souls of nearly hundred kids(possibly even more, but who knows). Odin was possibly the biggest piece of sh*t in the whole GoW universe... Or at least in the Norse Saga.

I mean the whole story of hers in Ragnarok is her being vengeful, but realizing that Kratos was just a "last push", the culmination of the choices she and Odin made... The true culprit behind, well, everything bad that had ever happened to her, was her own abusive husband. Husband she married to save her realm, yet she achieved nearly nothing by doing so... Few years of a very flimsy peace, then war renewed and now even bloddier than ever before. Freya was abused constantly by Odin and even after "separating" he still maintained his hold over her AND he even managed to destroy what little remained of their own son's sanity...

This is the sort of atrocity that would make people say, "Oh, god." But Kratos, Atreus, and Freya don't get that luxury. They don't have a higher power to rest against in light of this horror; they *are* that higher power. They can only do something about it, as gods.

This is why I love this game and 18 so much. In 18 we see and hear of all the atrocities and evil acts committed by Odin and Thor and Kratos and Atreus are the only ones who can stop them. I love how Odin was portrayed because he doesn’t seem capable of committing these acts. I know some fans wanted more than Kratos offering Thor a chance of redemption but Kratos of all can relate. Kratos and Atreus are new to this land but these acts have gone on for millennia. So they choose justice. But it took Sindri who has lived through it all to deal the real blow of justice. I wish Sindri was around for another game to deal out an act of justice but that’s another thing all together 😂😅

It's only a hope, likely to be dashed by the DLC/Sequel, but one would hope that as Atreus searches out surviving Giants and is perhaps forced to become wilier while evading Sindri, he learns of how to possibly heal broken souls, like Brok's, the victims of Faye's battle with Thor (and people in like suffering elsewhere) and the Raven children. In fact, I would work on doing all such things, because the amount of broken spirits wandering the realms could be inviting to Odin's own essence (I think Sindri should have left him contained, dark-genie-plot or no) or the next such monster. Unrelated directly, but I can't help but think about it: In the comics version of Sandman (don't think this arc's been adapted yet), Matthew The Raven, once Matt Cable of Swamp Thing fame, meets Huginn and Munin, and apparently they are all fascinated by how he was once a human. This storyline in GOW makes me rethink their fascination, though the Odin and Thor Morpheus meets fall between Marvel and old legend for their behavior and morality - not heroes, definitely, but not the marauding embodiment of callous destruction seen in this series. Loki, on the other hand, well, he does stuff that leads to stuff - Atreus and company would spam him with blows, though he gets his comeuppance.

I don’t see Sindri going for revenge on Atreus, even with everything that happened, he still cares about his friends and he knows Brok wouldn’t want him to do that.

Raven Keeper?! More like Raven Starver!* She left these birds deprived from the taste of freedom! *In Old Norse terminology, “Raven Starver” (or Hrafnasueltir) also means “coward”; anyone who refuses to give their life during a war will starve the ravens of fresh new corpses on the battlefield

Considering they can't move to the after life with Kratos in control I don't see it far fetched the ravens WILLINGLY and of their own occured following their old purpose. Kratos would vehemently be against it, but if the act of their own, he can't really stop it. It would be a measure of ensuring all the Einhajer and other things that would revel in wonton destruction aren't able to cause to much excessive damage.

Since they were killed and what's left of their souls are in the realm of the dead, I think their days of flying in Midgard might be over. Has little to do with Kratos being in charge or not. Their souls were so twisted by Odin and the Raven keeper that they don't get any afterlife other than what they have now. They are broken beyond repair.

He imprisoned mimir for what was going to be an eternity, personally overseeing his torture every day. Or what about the genocide of the giants? Or what about when he killed his own son with no remorse? Or any of the hundreds of stories of his cruelty mimir tells us? He’s evil and has always been portrayed as such. The reason he acted kind towards Atreus is to try to earn his trust
@dragonlogos1

@@somefavabeans there is something different to killing kids. War I understand, getting information, even killing his son when his son went against him. But these were children killed by their own parents to serve Odin. What the fuck. Like yes Odin was evil but there was sense to it. He was trying to accomplish something but this was both cruel and kind of entirely unnecessary.

@@dragonlogos1 Did you forget that Odin is known to be incredibly petty and cheap too? He goes into a fit if he was rejected or if he lost a bet. Consider this line he told Kratos, "Had anyone ever worshiped you? Ever prayed to you? Can you even imagine that kind of love?" What do you think he was referring to other than the parents who worshiped him and sacrificed those poor younglings' souls? He was gloating about it.

Going to Valhalla is overrated considering who Odin is/was. I doubt these souls would want to spend their afterlife in the halls of the god who wronged them so. In the games Norse mythology those not worthy of Valhalla go to Niflheim, but there is also the pool in Alfheim where souls create the light, perhaps that is the best resting place in this mythology.
