This is a video about the evolution of Jess and Luke's relationship on Gilmore Girls. A lot of attention has been paid to Luke and Lorelai or Rory and Jess but I have found the relationship between Luke and Jess to be the most compelling. I didn't pay attention to this relationship as much when I originally watched the show but upon rewatching the show, I was very touched by how much Luke and Jess evolved and how they bonded.

Luke pushing Jess in the lake wasn't a power move. it was a genuine sudden expression of frustration, and it spoke to Jess because it was *genuine*. that's why he liked that spot later. he hates dealing with people putting on false faces.

A note on Luke creating that hole in the wall: I think it was a nice 'I'm willing to make space for you' moment from him. You can take in a kid, have them sleep on a blowup mattress, but to look for an apartment/renovate your own home for them? It was Luke's way of showing Jess, "I'm here for you, and not just in the short term."

The scene where he "goes out for an hour" always seemed sad to me, I always interpreted it as something Jess is used to, we all know that Liz had many boyfriends and Jess was used to it. I think he felt unwelcomed in his our house, that's why he immediately goes out when he gets to SH. In my opinion, the way Jess snapped (22:25) as soon as TJ trow away his book says A LOT! It was an instant reaction, as if Jess had to deal with this kind of stuff when he was a kid, probably with one of the many men his mom dated. This is how traumatized he was. Also the way he can see through people's facades... I mean, he can immediately tell when a person is genuine and sincere or when it's wearing a mask and pretending. This is a skill that develops when you have dealt with horrible people and you try to safeguard and protect yourself. He was right about Dean (poor Lindsay) and I'm sure he was right about Logan too, when he met him he immediately understood what kind of guy he was.
@PensiveWhiskers
@PensiveWhiskers 7 ай бұрын
What bothers me is that in that fight between TJ and Jess, I feel that TJ was in the wrong. He is an adult who physically started a fight with a kid. TJ is the one who instigated it. Sure, Jess was ignoring TJ but that does not give TJ the right to start a physical altercation. The conversation that Luke has with Jess later almost makes it seem like Jess was in the wrong for getting into the fight.

Luke and Jess are a relationship that I seriously admire. You’re right, there are little male relationships in this show, and when you compare Luke and Jess to, say, Lorelai and Rory, you can see the difference between female vs male relationships. How much women release vs how much men bottle up. Luke and Jess clearly care about each other, but they don’t say it. They don’t need it. You can feel it. You can tell just through their actions.

@@PensiveWhiskers sadly true, and even if luke exaggerated Lizzes exes, Jess has seen some crap! Rewatching the series, it's really painfull to see how unheard Jesse's pain is, just because he expresses it rudely! Another moment, where Jess actually revealed a lot of pain, and a kernel of truth, you adressedcas well, where he accuses luke of making things worse when he helps. And he is kinda right, that luke puts a lot of pressure on ppl to be helped "his way" and can be judgemental if they don't. And it's funny that laurelai attacks jess for pointing that out, when she actually just told rory, hours before, that like would be hurt and annoying, if she hired a handyman to fix the window. It's also intresting that like actually gets better with this after jess pointed it out.

@saraa.4295 That is such an interesting insight about the parallel with how Lorelai was trying to spare Luke's feelings around wanting to help with what Jess then said. What made it such good writing was that it so true on so many levels but it was also so hurtful and unnecessarily dismissive of all the genuine help he does provide.

@@VioletEmerald that was a heartbreaking scene.. I think Jess was not wrong about how he felt the pressure of being helped to do something yet still mess up, and actually though in a misguided way, actually showed real vulnerability. This might have been a turning point if anyone had bothered to listen to what he felt and not just the words. And yes, luke is incredibly helpful, but he can also be judgemental and headstrong, especially when it comes to ppl he thinks are screwups...a side of him Lorelai never had to deal with,so her dismissing it out of hand shows how lottle regard she has for jess.

I wish they did more with Luke and Jess. First, I wish we saw a storyline of Luke trying to put Jess in a more challenging school. Fans constantly see how his school is boring and Jess never feels challenged. Imagine a storyline where Jess gets into Chilton on a secret scholarship which allows him to be challenged and maybe let his guard down a bit because someone cared enough to provide him this opportunity. Also, Jess and Rory could have a better relationship, maybe a more mature one while they study together or something. I hated how people never tried to be understanding of Jess and help him. His mom neglected mom. He barely knows his dad and he feels forced to live with Luke. It makes sense that his guard is up and is rude. I really feel a school like Chilton would help so many things. It may help his confidence. He can share this with Luke. He fan find people like him and he may be motivated for college or a career path. I can still picture him being a writer in this storyline as well as the original one. I can still picture going back to the town that made him happy instead of sad. Jess did some awful stuff, but Lorelai and the townspeople should not have blamed him for the accident. It was an accident. Everyone cared that Rory was hurt but not Jess. Only Luke cares about him. He cared about Rory too, but the only one who understood it was an accident. I do like his maturity in the end and trying to be better.

Yeah an interesting take, but don't think Chilton would have been the best fit for Jess, given the class-dynamics of the school. He should have (or maybe he did eventually) get his GED, to stay with Luke a while longer. Of course the only reason his character left the show, was because they were thinking of a spin-off based in California, which didn't pan out with the network. For Jess, though, his character did end up in a much better place terms of life-satisfaction than, say Paris or Rory according A Year in the Life. I don't like the character of Liz. The actress plays her as quirky, funny and likable, but we should not forget that Liz is really an awful and thoughtless person. It's amazing Jess wasn't more resentful when he arrived in Stars Hollow. Liz was physically around while he grew up, but abandoned him in different ways than Jimmy did. Jess's character needed therapy more than a posh prep-education at that point in time.

I think Jess' character journey was very realistic and relateable. Not everyone is in a position to go to a school that expensive, and Luke gave him lots of love and real-world responsibilities and experiences. He was incredibly intelligent and bored, sure, but it's hard to say if an elite school could easily fix that for him. Knowing his character, he'd probably roll his eyes at the suggestion and might rebel a bit. I think it's cool that because of his experiences with Luke and Rory, he was able to forge a unique path for himself and find success in his own way.

I know it's called Gilmore Girls but I wish they had more stories together! Jess only had Rory and Luke in his corner in a town that hated him and always put the blame on him. How ironic is it that everyone loved Dean but hated Jess if you see how their characters turned out in the OG. One married too young that cheats on his wife multiple times and the other one that worked on himself and got the best character growth in this show! Jess' jealousy to Dean was in my eyes justified if you see how much time Rory spent with Dean just right after their break up and Rory doesn't know how Dean is acting to Jess behind her back. Rory didn't believe Jess but immediatly believes Dean that they didn't fight when she went to him at his work. So, his jealousy was justified.

It’s funny, Lorelai has no idea how to handle Jess. As others have pointed out, she never healed from her own childhood. So when faced with a kid who needs a parent instead of a friend (Lauren Graham herself said Lorelai acts as more of a friend to Rory than a parent) she panics. She panics when Rory needs a parent too circa Logan/Yale dropout. The structure and tough love that Richard and Emily try to give Rory is a foreign concept, as is the structure and tough love that Luke gives to Jess. As others have said, Jess was abandoned physically and emotionally by his parents and is met with disdain from this hive mind town. Of COURSE he is angry. Of COURSE he is avoidant. Luke (and Rory, at times) is the only person who wasn’t afraid to call him on his bs while also validating that he had been dealt a garbage hand. It is an uncomfortable thing to acknowledge but Jess is only 16 years old. This is exactly the time when he needs unconditional love. This does not excuse his behavior, obviously. This is a nuanced situation and the Gilmores have egos on them the size of Mars that inhibit them from releasing their own sense of control and superiority and giving Jess some grace. Of course the writers didn’t expound upon the relationship between Luke and Jess, it didn’t lend itself to the cyclical self fulfilling prophecy of the Gilmore lineage that they love to hound so much. (I’m an avid fan of the show but boy if they can’t be REMARKABLY tone deaf.)

Luke and Jess will always be my favorite characters of GG because for Luke, it's endearing how he ended up being a better 'single' parent to Jess than Lorelai was with Rory. He defended Jess, letting him know he had his back. Still, he did not coddle him and this in turn, made Jess a better, more successful person. We later on see the good Luke instilled in Jess when he's the one that always tells Rory the truth the way Luke did when he constantly tried to set Jess straight. As for Jess, he constantly chose himself. It's the one thing I adored about the revival, when Jess leaves because he knows his worth and purpose is not to be tied with a homewrecker. Both Luke and Lorelai had 'trouble children' but one of them did not sugar coat the truth and set them up in a fantasy world of privilege, and it's why Jess went on to make himself and others proud.

i had to skip the end of the video cus I'm still in season 4 but I absolutely love their relationship so I had to watch this video. Luke and Jess are so sweet to each other and when they had that moment at the end of the wedding I had to cry for a good few minutes because you can tell just how much they've both grown since their first interaction with each other. They originally gave me step-brothers vibes because of their bantering and it really wasn't until Jess started dating that I felt Luke become more of a father figure and I feel like that's a really good look at Luke's character and how he adjusts depending on what he thinks Jess needs more at that moment (a friend, a brother, a father, etc.) so it really hit me when he gave that ultimatum? I think Luke didn't expect Jess to actually take it literally and bounce on him and he takes it so hard esp. cus Jess ends up running to his biological dad when he'd been trying so hard to parent him. I'm really happy with where their relationship is at the moment and I hope it just keeps getting better from here.

I think the parent gives an ultimatum without really wanting to, but they just don't know what to do in that moment. Jess is by far my favourite character ❤ so many people like to hate on him and completely ignore all the pain he went through. Yes, he made mistakes but when he made them, he was a *kid* that had been abandoned and tossed aside over and over and over again. I don’t think that one bad moment, one action that clearly wasn’t okay (kissing scene with Rory when she asks to stop and he doesn’t), I simply don’t think that such a moment in our teens should define the rest of our lives. Yet the Jess haters do exactly that. They cling on this moment and cannot forgive this broken, neglected *kid* who never had anybody whom he could trust until his excuse of a mother dumps him on his uncle who then shows Jess that he is worthy of being loved, that he matters. Jess grew so much. He probably has one of the best character developments on TV ever. And his and Luke’s relationship is the basis that made it all happen. So thanks for this video, it was wonderful to watch!

I also would like to make a note of a passing moment between Luke and Jess when Luke asks if he’s still into Rory. And even when Jess says no Luke gives the “I don’t buy it, but I know” look. And then Jess stays kinda confirming Luke’s suspicions. Also great full circle foreshadowing. A mirror of the relationships that already exist and implied will happen again.

I like that Jess finally grows up in the later seasons of GG. Children do grow up and you find that they make amends with the parent or guardian. I don't agree when Luke made fun of Jess about working at Walmart. The timing was not to make fun of him then. Jess was in high school and Luke's conversation should had been about Jess's school and homework. Working for an adolescense is secondary. Then Jess could not go to prom which become a reality check. The best scene in my opinion was when Luke & Jess fought by the lake. Then both walked on the bridge and Luke just push him off. Jess had agreed to saying "fine". Luke agreed to saying "okay, fine, with me too". That conversation ending in Jess in the lake was funny. Overall, children do grow up. That was a good point of those two.

Finally i got around to watching this one in full. I really love all the small things you noticed. I adored them since i first watched the series and my first ever fanfiction story i wrote about 13.5 years ago i centered around their platonic relationship because i just. I'm drawn to them for many reasons. The show left us wanting a little more between them i think. There was so much unsaid. And yet so much established too. I particularly love the softness of the love they each had for the other. The perfect mix of very skilled acting, especially when Milo thinks of himself as kinda the opposite kind of person as Jess in many ways... and impressively astute writing. This show understood how to write very real types of human beings. The little moment of Jess trying to ask Rory how Luke is doing when she visits him in NYC comes to mind too -- it's too hard to honestly and openly show that he cares. Just like Luke won't admit the very next episode why he didn't pack up Jess's boxes. They miss each other. But in the way very quiet and avoidant men do. Both of them were neglected it seems. Both of them (Jess and Luke) have a lot of unhealed trauma. Liz and Luke reacted in very different ways to a similar upbringing and their parents both dying when they were exceedingly young. But i love how you framed every single thing relatively positively between them even when you didn't agree with it or didn't think it was the best thing they could've said or did. Your clear affection for Luke's pride over Jess getting employee of the month made me smile a lot. Stuff like this was just golden. I completely think you're right that Jess wouldn't have read the book on love if it wasn't Luke giving it to him and well, he also had literally no one else who would give him this kind of advice. The book is why they end up with that amazing hug too btw. Because they each had so recently learned the same lesson about how to love in even platonic ways. He confides in Luke all about his I Love You too Rory and Luke genuinely tries to explain why Rory hasn't said anything back in a way I don't think had crossed Jess's mind until that heart to heart in the dark diner. One of the many issues i have with A Year In The Life is that they don't address Jess not being there for Luke & Lorelai's little middle of the night wedding. And they don't prioritize finding a way to have Milo there for that scene. I think for Lorelai, someone like Sookie not being there is not at all the same because Lorelai has Rory, her true closest platonic bond, there with her but they remind us of how good the dynamic with Jess is for Luke throughout AYITL and then Luke doesn't care that Jess isn't there for the wedding? Idk it feels wrong that they don't get one last moment of pride and sweetness. I know it's mostly all due to budget and maybe timing and schedules but. It is one more thing that just felt tone deaf and like AYITL forgot and got confused about so much of what the show was so good at. It forgot its own priorities and why we all loved it. I cannot believe Jess wouldn't be at Luke's wedding. And sure they'll get married again in daylight for everyone i guess but. We don't even get to see it so how does that even count? I always felt a special connection to Jess because i was raised by a mother who was awful in her own ways. And i was always very drawn to any acknowledgement on TV that mothers can be awful. I also have always wanted to become a foster parent one day since before i saw Gilmore Girls in my teenage years. And Luke is essentially a kinship foster parent taking in his teenage nephew as his guardian and i have always been drawn to these kinds of storylines. So i was bound to love this part of the show. I read whatever fanfiction i could find at the time over a decade ago that centered moments between these two in a purely familial way. I thought about them a lot. I think there is such a richness in the way the dynamics all overlap and intertwine when you add in rooting for both Lorelai/Luke and Rory/Jess as romantic endgame. There is so much to every dynamic between these 4 characters. 😊

Jess has such an amazing character arc. He is an emotinally abused kid without parental support, when he comes to stars hollow. His mother just abondonded him. And everyone there just acts like a 16 year old traumatised BOY should act all grateful. Like... of cause he acted up. Of cause he makes mistakes. He flunks school, because he feels like working his ass off outside of school will be more beneficial, because college doesn't seem like a viable option. Luke tries, he tries so hard, but of cause, he makes mistakes, because he literally has no experience with kids. He just tries to do the right thing and gets shit on from literally everyone around him. But the hard work pays off for both of them. Jess starts feeling safe. And as soon as he's over the weird hormonal teenage drama (and obviously being able to work on his Trauma) he does the work. He works on healing himself,he works on bettering his situation and reaps success. So does Luke. He works on his relationship with Lorelei (with all the ups and downs). And they both succeed. And they both have found family and safety in eachother. It's such a beautiful story. I always say but, it's just so true: platonic relationships are pretty much always better in any type of media.

Jess is such a great character with a potential story arc that was scrapped when the network didnt okayed the spinoff series (Jess in LA) that's why instead of just being written off we actually follow him to meet his dad and his partner in LA. Unlike Trsten (Chad Michael Murray) was written off for him to go to One Three Hill and David (Adam Brody) went to make the OC. Then Milo Ventimiglia went on to make Heroes (Bedford DIaries first then Heroes...) ASP wrote his character arc off screen from no good punk to just a punk, to dead end job struggling to get by, to a bohemian writer, to full fledged artist/writer. Too bad that Milo is so successful as an actor I think it robbed us an opportunity to see him in a more active role in the revival. I think he was very busy with This is Us.

Hello! I might! I've been wanting to focus more on smaller characters for now, but I might be expanding out to larger characters as I improve in my video creation skills. I know Luke and Jess are quite big on the show, so I already broke that rule. I wasn't going to make a video on them but something about their relationship kept calling to me, so I decided to not resist it. I have a video idea for Emily that I wrote out, but it's not so much an analysis video as it is a crazy theory about her background. It might be too controversial to post. 🤐

I think people do not recognise enough what a bad mother Liz was. Especially because she was portrayed as such a nice and sweet character (although rather simple-minded) when shown in the series. Only from what is said of Jess one can puzzle together, that she did not care much about making a safe home for Jess but more about her own wishes. So Jess' behaviour made perfect sense and for him still come around and develop so greatly, when there finally was someone who cared about him, was a strong thing to do. Especially in comparison to Rory, who had so much support and love and ended quite self-centered.

What I find so interesting is how OBSERVANT Jess is (probably due to him being neglected most of his childhood). He is very good at assessing relationships and people and can easily twist the knife in the insecurities of people if he wants to. That's why Lorelai cannot really handle him - Jess sees right through her bullshit tbh. But Luke still puts in the work because he sees that this boy has been hurt by the world before and that is probably something he can really relate to.

Sorry, I am commenting a lot on your videos because KZfaq keeps showing them to me as I am a very long term Gilmore Girls viewer. I started watching it at a very turning point in my life and the relationship between Emily and Lorelei reminded me my mother and me, so something incredibly familiar almost word for word. Anyway to come back to Jess and Luke. Jess becomes calmer and more loving towards Luke little by little after having the opportunity to interact with his real father played by Rob Estes. I think that Jess could finally understand why his father had left. It had nothing to do with himself, nothing to do with Liz, it’s just because of Jimmy only. Jess could also do the comparison with Luke. Luke acted like a real father with all his imperfections, but it came from a very paternal intention. With maturity, Jess could finally understand where it was coming from, he had to work and count only on himself after leaving, and suddenly he realized how much Luke did for him. I think that Jess was too clever and too well read to have a traditional career. It’s not always the most graduated ones who succeed the best, it can help but it’s not guaranteed. I really like Jess character, contrarily to Lorelei (for once), I think that Jess was the best boyfriend for Rory, in spite of the accident which was an accident. And of course I absolutely love Luke character even if he is not always the best with Lorelei, but it’s never really mean. Jimmy in Santa Monica told Jess that he loved so much the Santa Monica/Venice Beach that he could marry it. I told that to my sons years ago before even watching Gilmore Girls. I can relate to many things in this series. The writers are exceptional in all the seasons.

Honestly, I think I just talk weird and I'm becoming more and more aware of it as I make videos. I hope to sound better and will hopefully not sound like I'm dead inside in future videos. It may take some time. To answer your question on editing, I use Adobe Podcast which removes background noise and echo from audio. I also edit out all long pauses and parts where I'm just breathing into the mic. I have a lot of sibilance sounds in my speech. I think the only way to get rid of that is through practice. I hope it's not too bothersome. I appreciate the feedback!
