I found the Asher relationship soooo shocking, as someone who watched the show for the first time in more recent years. I thought they were going to say something meaningful about power dynamics and age gaps but no, they just played it for laughs

@Goldlucky13 They aren't taking Paris as a human being with emotions seriously. Much like Kirk, this autistic coded extremely odd person's entire life and every scene is played for laughs. The fact that she chooses to date someone so old is also framed as very much her own choice. She's too... not sure what word makes sense here, maybe just too "in control of everything" to possibly be the victim of anything unfair is sorta implied. It's a weird thing to imply but literally everything about Paris as a character is pretty weird.

Isn’t that in itself a statement on age gaps and power dynamics relationships especially for that time frame? If this is how it was being portrayed on TV, what does that say for how it was happening in real life? I prefer this cause this is more real I don’t like the fake versions where people cared and realized how wrong it was. That’s not what happened back then. Understand what that means for society as a whole and don’t try and sugarcoat reality.

It's super weird to me that Asher ALWAYS dating freshmen was glossed over. That's the key point to me. It's a pattern. It didn't happen because Paris is unusual or bored by college guys. (In which case it'd still be weird, but then the hospital scene wouldn't have been as off-putting, and would have been a good opportunity for him to say, "If you still want to date in five or six years, give me a call"). It happened because Asher goes after 18-19-year-olds. That's weird.

Yes! I had a section that I cut out of the video where I said something similar. It didn't seem like Asher was into Paris because she was just so unique and special that he looked past her age. He was into her because of her age. They got together very quickly (they start seeing each other in the same episode that they met) and like you mentioned, he has a pattern of doing this.

@ennuiblue4295 Paris is pretty insecure (which makes her secretive) and oblivious to what other people notice. Same thing happened when she was first dating Jamie and Francie found out about it-- Paris was upset because she thought it was "private." What she didn't realize was how obvious it already was, whether or not Rory said anything.

Yes, but remember that itself is a statement on the power dynamics and relationship age gaps Think about it people didn’t even bat an eye. they would laugh at Paris. They were calling her an idiot, but they don’t really consider that she was a victim. The man get a pass, the women get judged.

I was very disappointed in Paris’s actions when she cheated on Jamie and when she ended things you would expect for her to end it the moment where she wasn’t in love anymore since she always speaks her mind on things. I find it quite funny that there some moments when she mentioned that no one will ever be interested in her and then when Jamie did she just doesn’t care and her excuse is “ I just don’t know how to handle these things” shows that she’s not emotionally stable.

Wow, that is a fascinating potential character combination! I agree that it could be unbearable, but also... maybe it could be amazing? Both of them are SO sure of themselves in their irritating behavior, and they come from completely different social strata that neither would respect, BUT they both have terrible families who neglect them, and that could allow them to bond over their trauma. I think Paris would bully the hell out of Jess to get his shit together, and I think that might actually have worked, whereas soft young Rory couldn't have pushed him enough. To clarify, it is NOT someone's job to push their partner to improve (and especially not a woman needing to fix her man, etc). But we do in reality change during relationships, with the influence (for good or ill) of our partner. I basically imagine that Jess would have ended up in his later season situation: a writer, part of an indie book world, calm and collected and fine as hell. And Paris would have appreciated the effort he put in, and even though he didn't make it through academia his drive and achievement would have mattered to her in a way that it just didn't for Rory. And though it may sound weird, I bet they would have super intense chemistry. They do so much work to make Paris seem less attractive than Rory, but Paris is beautiful and deserves to shine. I never knew I had such strong feelings about these two characters! To anyone who read the whole thing, thank you for coming to my Ted Talk. 🤓 Edit: I realized I didn't mention what Jess offers Paris! I would actually love to hear thoughts on this. What does young Jess really have to offer to anyone? He's adorable, but damn he's difficult.

But if I was Rory, living in the same dorm room as Paris and had known her for all those years, I don’t know if I’d try to stop her relationship with Asher. Okay, a lot of people are saying that they were shocked when Paris got with Asher, for me it made PERFECT SENSE, I was never a fan of it but I truly think it made so much sense for Paris’ character. Based on her home life, Paris had major Daddy issues, I don’t remember perfectly but did they ever mention Paris’s dad? If they did it was probably once or twice. We see this with many other teacher x student tropes (I’m specifically referring to teacher that’s a man and student that’s a girl) usually the student has family problems and without realizing search for a parental figure, usually they notice they are doing this and see them as a romantic partner. Giving the adult an opportunity to take advantage of the fact the student wants an adult around. Also we always kind of see that school is Paris’s escape from her home life with her Mom, and she’s so hard working when it comes to school. A professor, would be smart enough for Paris (in her own eyes) and mature enough for Paris. And at that point in Paris’s life, I think it made sense for Paris to fall in love with an older man. (I am not enforcing these relationships in anyone, I find them manipulative, and frankly makes me uncomfortable. ALL MY OPINION) #TeamDoyle

Prior to the Asher relationship, i think the only real mention of her dad was when her parents very public, very messy divorce was being discussed, and then a one-off that divorce was apparently going to be too expensive. Beyond that, it was the family legacy she felt she didn't live up to by not being accepted into Harvard. But yeah, Paris had some major issues at home. Her parents weren't even at her graduation, her nanny and her kids were. And yeah, I see what you're saying. The relationship makes sense. Beyond the initial shock, it isn't very surprising. That doesn't make it any less awful, but it does make a certain amount of sense.

I wish we would have gotten to see her dates with Jamie. I thought it was very sweet when she did not realize he asked her out, and when she needed help with clothes. Would have been nice to see her character on that first date - both her blunt, intelligent side, and her nervous, smitten side. Asher should never have happened, I hate it. Why? WHY? For a few jokes, some of the worst in the show? Nah... I like to reimagine her arc with a serious tone, where the obviously exploitative affair with a huge power imbalance is taken seriously, and it's a consequence of her trauma of having absent parents, a need for validation, and her sort of "old for her age" self image she has (though at times she is obviously childish) - she had a lot of real traits and experiences that puts girls/women at risk for these sorts of relationships.

i always felt really bad for Jamie and Dean (season 1 NOT older Dean), they were all teenagers and each other's first love. Being a teen is intense already and so are the feeling you have. I don't find Deans watching Rory creepy, who hasn't watched their crush from afar? It's nerve-racking to even approach a crush. Jamie and Paris also had a good time on their date, it is just their date was at the very end of summer and he was going off to college so he wasn't sure. They're only 1 year apart too, so no weird age play going on and his "driving 3 hours to visit her" is not creepy. if u look at it from a creepy lens then all you will see are creepy actions.

When I watched it one time I was in a similar relationship with a guy that was much older than me and before Paris got into the room I thought maybe I can learn from this scene (I was considering to break it up). But to me there was no chemistry, it seemed more like a talk between a dad or grandpa with his (grand)daughter 😖 I know it is stupid but I still have feelings for the guy even though he is 20 years older than me and I imagine a serious relationship with him would be hell cause our world views don’t match 😂 But our affair ended 7 years ago and looking back I am glad about that

Great Analysis (as always)! I adored the little storytime with Jamie and Lindsay! What really struck me was you saying you don't blame Lorelai or anyone for not speaking out against Asher, because they are not real people, but written that way. Yes, absolutely, obviously - and yet you spelling it out the way you did felt new to me? At the very least it was a good reminder that characters aren't human and that stories aren't the real world. Somehow that simple statement stuck with me, so, thanks! Also really liked your rewrite of the Asher storyline and thoughts on how it could have affected the Gilmores. Sadly, I don't think Richard would have a hard time believing that Paris was in a relationship with her Prof, but a hard time seeing it as wrong/a big deal. Maybe until he overhears his granddaughter and her friend saying something naive about the relationship and realizes how young they really are?

Thank you! ☺️ You saying that you gained a new perspective means a lot, it means I’m getting better at expressing myself. I agree that Richard would probably not care about the Asher/Paris relationship. Without that, I think he would totally condone the relationship.

(i know yall are gonna hate me for this comparison, but it’s very loose), then jess / asher are the ones that enter their lives and cause excitement and make them feel seen and heard in some way, causing them both to cheat on their boyfriends (this is why i’ve always hated when rory bashes on paris to lorelai for cheating with an OLDER guy as if age makes it any worse). both relationships end badly (for different reasons), and both relationships cause judgement from their peers. then doyle and logan come along snd theyre like the perfect match for both of them, yale men and career driven.

I agree with pretty much everything you said. I was happy for Paris when Jamie happened, but we never knew him well enough for me to ship it, and the Asher thing was really unnecessary, though I don't know that I ever noted the Dean-Rory-Jess parallel until you pointed it out. Doyle was her best relationship by far, and I hate that they broke up in the revival. Also, I love how the first time Buffy the Vampire Slayer is referenced in the series is in the same episode Paris and he get together. I don't think this is a coincidence either. It's documented that Amy Sherman Palladino is a Buffy fan, and she's said that she would have Buffy on in the background while she was working on Gilmore Girls scripts, taking inspiration from the quick and snappy dialogue. She was happy to get a Buffy alum for her show, and she named him Doyle, which was clearly a reference to Doyle from Angel the Series RIP. I love Jonathan and Doyle, though Doyle is clearly a better person. When you said Jonathan had problematic aspects, I thought you would show a clip of him talking about the twins that he essentially raped when he cast that spell in S4. I honestly don't think peeing in the pool of a swim team that bullies you is that bad, though I guess we could see it as indication that he had a vengeful side which he would use when he had the ability to do so. Anyway, great video. Stay safe.

I also thought that Rory’s mention of Spike and Dru in that episode was foreshadowing for Doyle. That’s a good point about Doyle being named after Doyle on Angel. I always associated the name « Doyle » with the character on Angel so I automatically thought it was a funny coincidence that a Buffy alum would have the same name as a Buffyverse character. The peeing in the pool is definitely not Jonathan’s worst action, or even close to it. I was attempting (and failing) to do an inside joke with Buffy fans. I was thinking “what if I included the most benign clip of a character who has clearly done a lot worse.” I’m not very good with jokes so a lot of them fall flat in my videos. 😅

If you make an April video, I'd like your thoughts on Luke's possible feelings of inadequacy as a parent (him telling Lorelei April would 'like her more', calling her when the party was falling flat and the appendicitis. Also he alluded to thinking he failed Jess). In a way, it adds to him shutting Lorelei out, because he is offered a chance to father and doesn't want to -mess up- again 🤔 also he seemed hurt when Christopher said 'you're not Rory's father' despite all he did for her. Ok I'm done lol

I wondered what your thoughts would be on *AYITL Spoiler Alert* --- Paris and Doyle's divorce in AYITL but not upset at all you didn't include it. It shouldn't have happened.

I'm sorry I didn't include it. I have been thinking of doing a separate video on AYITL so I have been mostly holding off on discussing the content of the revival. I want to figure out how I feel about all of it first. When I'm watching with my thinking cap on, my perception shifts a lot. I took some notes on the revival but I have to go back and re-watch again. I will be sure to discuss Paris and Doyle in the revival when I make that video. :)

24:30 I guess I kind of understand them not working out in the end because they were pretty on and off a lot of the time. But I still hate that they split up in the remake. It felt so unnecessary and annoying. Like they were the type of couple where if they kept them together in the remake it would NOT make people go like "This makes no sense at all! Why are they still together?" People would accept it and even find it cute because Rory's adult life is so depressing that Paris' family/career life would have been a nice break. An example of a relationship they should have ended in the remake was Lane and Zach's though. THEY are the couple where it makes no sense for them to stay together.

Rory's lucky. Paris is lucky. People should stop saying that just because someone's with a half way decent guy. The guy isn't the prize. She should be encouraged to give up someone that isn't right for her.
